Chapter 4

Veer was unusually happy this morning. He couldn't stop smiling for some reason .. . he felt like he was on top of the world! Forget 7th heaven ... he was on cloud 9. Apart from that gorgeous smile on his lips , there was a spring in his step.

He grabbed his roller-skates and left home. Just outside he found the perfect place for skating. It was a downward slope ... which eventually leads into the mall's parking -area. "PERFECT" , he smirked. He attached his foot-wear and off he went. The constantly increasing velocity was giving him an unimaginable thrill. He loved the feeling of speed and the cold gust of wind blowing through his hair was making him jubilant. Veer closed his eyes and held out his hands side-wards ... reinacting the famous Leonardo diCaprio /Kate Winslet pose from Titanic.

He opened his eyes in time to see a girl coming onto his way. All his senses immediately shut down ... he couldn't even warn her to get out of his way! Trying to stop ... was not even an option ! There was no way to lessen his speed and in a split second - 1 out of them both ... or perhaps both of them , would be on the floor writhing in pain!

He tightly shut his eyes ... and waited for the inevitable. It so happened that the girl too ... did the same thing! She was rooted to the spot with her eyes tightly shut ... waiting for a mighty fall to happen.

When NO CRASH happened , Veer opened his eyes ... he was still gliding on his skates and was probably 100 metres away from that girl. He turned back to see her in somebody's arms. Veer thanked God for that saviour , who obviously got the girl out of the way in time ... he yelled back to them ... "SORRY" - and continued on his way.

The girl was dishevelled for a moment ... but what shocked her more was her saviour. His hands were comfortable on her waist ... and his face - as white as a ghost! All the colour from Uday's face drained when he saw who was in his arms ... it was that "angel" from the flower shop.

"Ummm ... errr ... hehhh ... huhhh" - he tried to say something ... but seems like his voice-box was on holiday! The girl laughed at his nervousness. "Gosh - she's even more adorable when she laughs" , he thought. "Aa ... aa .. are ... are yo " , he stammered yet again ; but lucky for him , she understood : "Yeah - I'm fine!" , she answered and gestured towards his hands on her hips. "Ummm - SORRY" , he apologised.

"God , what's wrong with you Uday , you're behaving like a teen who's come in front of his CRUSH! Get a hold of yourself and talk like a MAN! ", he reprimanded himself in silence. "GOD HELP ME" ... he thought he said it to himself ; but it come out quite loud. "God help u with WHAT ... maybe with removing my kit!" , she teased.

"She's a mind-reader" , Uday was beyond astonished. Nervously , he held out his hand : "Uday Veer Singh" , he introduced himself. She took his hand , and gave her name: "Maya" .

U - That's a very pretty name.

M- Thanks. Sorry for being rude the other day ... your staring took me off-guard!

U - Please let's forget about that.

M - BTW , Did she like it?

U- What?

M- the flowers ... did the recipient like it?

Uday did not know what to say ,as suddenly he was reminded of Arthi. "Errr " , the stammering started for him , again.

M - Was it NOT for a girl ... was it for a guy? Sorry ... I didn't figure you to be gay!

U - I'M NOT GAY!!!!!!!

... he blurted out so fast in his defence ... causing her to laugh uncontrollably. Uday admired her ... the way she covered her mouth and laughed ... the way her eyes got moist if she laughed for too long ... the way her chest heaved and the way her lips quivered ... GOSH!!!!!!!!!!! HE WANTED TO DO BAD THINGS TO HER and WITH HER!

flashback (18 years back)

It was a bright morning but the girl's face was tear stained as she hugged her mother ...

Girl: amma, eniku pediyakunu, itrayum kalam ningalodopam undayithu ipoo marinilkumbo (mama, iam getting a bit scared, I had never stayed away from you and now...)

"mathi vandiku samayamayi" (enough, we are getting late for the train) said a rude voice of her uncle.

They hugged again and she watched her mother go away from her. She closed her eyes and shed the tears in them and walked towards her class.

She was born in a lower middle class family in Kerala, her father died when she was just 2 and since then, she and her mother were living with her uncle. She was bright in her studies and so she passed her twelfth with 97%. She had written an entrance exam and passed it with flying colours. So she had got admission in a prestigious college in Mumbai on full scholarship and so she was here, she felt she had come to a world full of aliens. Everyone around her wore modern outfits. Many she did not know the name too. And she became self conscious of the dress she wore, it was a salwar which was loose and reached below her knees. Her hair was oiled and tied in form of plaits, she had hair till her bum that shook when she walked. Everyone was staring at her thinking "who is this weird creature?"

After the" brief" introduction section, the principal left the 140 something new kids for lunch, the "girl" had made friends with 2 other girls. As she stood in the queue of the mess, a bunch of seniors caught her.

"come here" they ordered.

It was a group of 4 boys and 2 girls. It was none other than our Uday and his bunch of "cool" friends

The"girl" was scared and it showed on her face, she felt like she would pass out any moment.

u: whats your name sweety?

the girl stammered an answered: ma... manyta

u: so manyta, do you dance? he told winking at her

"i.. no.. dance" she stammered. Her accent made them laugh

"you're a "mallo" ( a name given to people of Kerala by outsiders)eh? Asked Sameer

"what?" she asked terrified "devame raksikaname"(God save me)she muttered

"are you a native of kerala?

"ye..yes, I native ok kerala" she spoke in broken English.

"do you sing sweetheart?"asked Uday with a naughty glint in his eyes.

She held her hands together and started to fidget with her fingers" diavame,(o god) ee raskasanmarill ninene rakshikeneame( save me from these demons)

"are you deaf?"

"no, daivame rakshikename"

"is this deven your bf?"

"what bf?'

"boyfriend?"

"no no no he is god"

"so you're God's gf, I mean girl friend?"teased Uday

Tears started to fall from her eyes. Akash told Uday" leave her na, let her go"

"umm ok you go now, but next time you will sing and dance a western number for us, ok"

She didn't answer but ran away from there

"cute girl" said uday as he watched her retreating back and her hair swing as she ran'

"what?" said Aryan." Are you out of your mind?"

"na, iam serious, under that weird exterior there is a beautiful girl hidden and I WANT HER!!!!!!!" he said winking at his friends.

They got the meaning and they hi fived each other in agreement

He was daydreaming about that beauty when he received a call

He told a irritated "hallo?"

"uday? Its me jagat"

"ahh, jagat, how are you man, its long time since we have met, so where are you now?"

"I got transferred to Mumbai station last week. Actually I called you on official grounds"

"what happened, jaggat?"

"you know, sameer met with an accident yesterday and he is dead"

"wh..what?" asked a shocked uday."sameer, dead? I can't believe it?" "I was with him , the other day!"

"iam sorry Uday"

A crowd of people had gathered outside the mallya residence hearing the misfortune. Uday and arthi too went over there, arthi went inside , consoling sameer's parents. Uday stood outside with jaggat and many others.

Uday was heartbroken hearing the news. He was trying hard to fight his tears. A car stopped outside the mallya's driveway and a man walked outside unsteadily, it was clear that he was drunk.

He stumbled and swayed from side to side crying"sameer my friend, how could you leave me?'
