Chapter 12
"I don't understand how you can be careless and workaholic", she told him angrily. "Why should someone remind you and follow-up with you to find out if you've had your food, or if you've taken proper rest? Do you have any idea how worried your Daadima is, that for the last few days you've hardly taken care of yourself? Shouldn't you be taking care of her, instead of her taking care of you, Mr. Maan Singh Khurana?", yelled Geet
Maan looked at her quietly and did not say anything. "Why are you staring at me, now? Even now you don't have to have lunch, is it?", she asked him.
He got up from his chair and moved closer to her. "I cant believe you absolutely don't care for yourself. How can you '..?" and He placed his hand on her waist and gently pulled her closer. He bent closer and gently kissed her cheek.
"I don't need to care for myself as long as Daadima and you care for me, Geet", he whispered in her ear.
"Makkan lagaane ki zaroorat nahin hain", she said, and pushed him back, "Hatiye aap".
"Geet", said Maan, softly.
"Haan Geet hoon main", she said, "Abhi bhi lunch nahin karna hain aapko? Bas bahaana chahiye aapko sirf uss laptop aur uss Sasha ke saath baite rehne ke liye. Kya usne aapke office kaam ke liye- lunch ya dinner kabhi skip ki?", she asked angrily.
"Geet, important kaam thi, isiliye" and Geet cut him off, "Oh cut it out, Mr. Khurana. If today's meeting is important then why haven't you had proper food and rest in the days I was not here?"
"Geet, because I don't get time to do every thing I want to do- when Daadima and you are at home", he said and that angered Geet even more.
"Oh! I see", she said, staring angrily at him, "So, we are a disturbance to you?", she asked.
Maan caught his head, "Geet, honey, that's not what I meant"
"Yea right! Then what did you mean?", she spurted out.
"Geet, do we really need to argue over this now?", he asked, losing his patience too.
"No, we didn't have to argue over this at all- if you could take care of yourself. We dint have to talk to each other this way- even after seeing each other after almost a week- if only, Mr. Khurana, you could take care of yourself", she said, lowering her voice a little.
"Okay fine! I'll take care of myself next time. And thanks for letting me know that no one cares enough for me- and that I have to take care of myself while taking care of everything else- the family, the business, the empire- in short, everything!", he said and walked out of the chamber angrily.
"Maan, suniye", she called back to stop him. But he was gone. She hit her head, "Oho Geet! you should have just shut up and let him have his lunch first and then argue with him. Now, he wont eat at all", she cribbed, falling onto the couch in the chamber.
"Babaji, kuch khijiye please! Maan aur bhi thak jayenge babaji", she prayed silently, hoping her Babaji would bring Maan back as soon as possible for lunch.
She picked up the receiver and called Shreyasi, to find out where Maan was. "I dunno Ma'am. The last time I saw him was with you", she said, "But anyways, I'll check and get back", she said and hung up wondering where Maan disappeared even out of his wife's sight.
She texted him, "Maan, wapas aapiye please. Lunch kijiye", and was upset to hear the phone beep and vibrate on his table- beside his laptop.
"Main hi jaa ke dekhto hoon", she thought and got up and walked to the door when the door opened again. She smiled as she saw Maan walk in with a few other blue prints. He simply ignored Geet, walked past her to the table, and sat there, looking through them.
"Maan", she said, walking towards him.
"Geet, go back home. Our talk is over", he told her with a straight face and angry red eyes.
"I'm sorry- Main kuch zyaada gusse mein thi. Aap please lunch kijiye", she pleaded.
"No", he said.
"Maan please. I'll hold my ears for you- I'm sorry. Please", she said, going close to him.
He did not respond. She immediately walked back to the bag she had bought with her and opened it.
"I got gobi parathe made for you, Maan", she said, taking to box to him. "Please thoda kha lijiye. Mere liye hi na sahi, apne Daadima ke liye, Maan. She's very worried", she said.
Maan looked at Geet, holding a piece of paratha dipped in curd for him.
He looked away again- this time to turn on his laptop. Geet held his hand and prevented him from turning it on. She held the screen of the laptop and brought it to a close. She then held his hand and said, "Aayiye, please lunch kijiye".
Maan did not listen. He simply pushed his chair back and rested closing his eyes. Within a few minutes he could feel geet's nose rubbing against his, "So much anger- that your nose has become so red", she said and pecked his cheek. He was shocked and so was she. She had never gotten so close to him. But she did not mind. She had to get him out of his anger and make him eat. Maan did not react- though he was extremely shocked that Geet pecked him. She had hugged him several times before- and that's where it stopped.
"Maan, I'll bring the food over for you?", she asked. "Nakul made all your favorite dishes", she said. Maan still dint react. He was waiting to see- how far she would go and what she say to convince him to take a bite of the food. He was hungry too- he was feeling weak too and the fatigue of the work load and the horrible schedules had already kicked in- that morning- but he was not the one to give up and succumb. He wanted to see Geet's persistence and commitment today. He wanted to test her patience and concern.
"Maan", she called again softly and this time brought the piece of paratha closer to his lips. Maan still did not react. "Maan", she said, holding his chin and jaw tight now- trying to shove the piece of the paratha into his mouth. Maan turned away.
"Maan you're behaving like a kid now. You know- those toddlers who don't want to eat and irritate their moms", she said, still trying to get that piece into his mouth while he continued to turn his face side to side- to avoid the food.
"Maan, what should I do to make you eat?", she thought. She got tired too and stopped and looked at him for sometime.
"Theek hain. Aaj main bhi nahin jaungi yahan se- until you've eaten something. Whenever you want- you can come and eat. I'll wait until then", she said, and picked up the box and walked towards the couch. She left the boxes at the side table and dropped onto the couch. She picked up the magazine and started reading it.
The entire Khurana mansion was quiet- obviously why wouldn't it. Geet was not in the mansion.
The huge iron gates of the mansion fell open- and a black colored Jaguar drove in. Nakul had opened the door and smiled at the young woman standing in front of him.
"Mansion itna quiet kyun hain?", she asked, softly.
"Ji, sab rest kar rahen hain- Geet madam Bahar gayi hain aur Maan saab office mein hain", he answered. "Aap andar aayiye betiya", he said and was about to take her bags when she stopped him.
"Aap rehne dijiye kaka- main apne kamre mein rakh dungi. Aur kisi ko batana mat ki Kiara Singh Khurana, India wapas aa gayi hain", she said, smiling and looking around the grandeur living room of the Khurana Mansion- "It feels great to be back home". She took her bags and quietly walked upstairs into her bedroom. It was all clean and organized. She was surprised- she had not told anyone about her arrival- she as always loved to surprise her family- by showing up all of a sudden- then how did her room look as though it was just cleaned and decorated for her stay.
She walked around the room and opened the curtains. She could see the large swimming pool of the Khurana Mansion and smiled. She and her brother Dev- would always try to swim faster and try all possible stunts to show that one is better than the other is. The blue waters- sparkled with the sun light falling onto it. She took a deep breath and walked into the walk-in closet. She opened it- pulled out a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. She was about to close it- when she found some note-
"Welcome back Sweety Pie" scribbled on a piece of paper. She at once, realized the handwriting and said, "Ah, how could I forgot that this man- always knows when I'd arrive".
She then walked to the bed and found a note there too, scribbled in the same handwriting- "So, nice to have you back- Relax for sometime and I'll see you soon".
Maan occasionally looked at Geet, who was engrossed in reading the magazine. He did not say anything.
After some time she said, without even looking at him, "Maan, AC temperature thoda increase kijiye- mujhe thand lag rahin hain". Maan turned to look at her- she was busy reading the magazine. He took a deep breath and increased the temperature of the AC.
After a few minutes, she spoke up again, "Maan, aapke paas aur koi magazines hain kya?"
"They're all there at the table you're sitting Geet. That's all I have", he said, checking his emails.
"Huh? That's it? Kitne boring magazines hain yeh", she said, getting up from the couch. "Aapke paas koi interesting magazines hain kya?",
"Interesting matlab? Woh sab interesting hi to hain", he said, still not looking at her.
"India today, Business today, Forbes- yeh sab interesting hain Mr. Khurana?", she asked. "Interesting matlab- Femina, Filmfare etc etc. Woh nahin hain aapke paas?", she asked, stretching.
Maan looked at her and raised his eye-brow. She stood straight and quickly said, "Oh I'm sorry. How did I forget?", she said.
"Forget what?"
"That you're boring", she said, smirking. He did not react- he got back to checking his email.
"Aap kya kar rahen ho?", she asked, walking to his table.
"Boring log aur kya karenge- kaam kar rahan hoon", he said, sarcastically.
"Hmmm, theek hain. Main kya karu ab?", she said.
"Ghar jao", he said and she was about to say something when his landline rang. He picked it up and said, "Haan Sasha bolo"
"Aa gayi chudail ka phone", murmured Geet.
They spoke for sometime and hung-up. "Aapko phone utaane se pehle hi kaise pata chala ki aapki girl friend ka phone hain?", she asked.
"Girl friend hain na, isiliye", he said, with a lopsided smile.
"Accha dil ki connection", she said.
"Yep- absolutely", he said, continuing to check his emails.
"Aap usi ki email check kar rahe ho?", she asked, loving teasing him.
"Email kehke isse cheap mat banao Geet- love letter hain", he said.
"Oh, looovvvwwweee letter", she said, stressing on the word "love"
"Yes, ab tum jao aur wahan baito. Disturb mat kar mujhe", he said.
"itna serious love-letter hain?", she asked.
"Haan- needs lot of concentration", he said, sarcastically.
"Oh, okay!", she said, turning back to walk to the couch.
"Shreyasi will have the magazines you want", he said. She turned back to look at him and he was looking at his laptop.
"Kyun Sasha ke paas nahin honge?", she asked, chuckling.
He shook his head in irritation, picked up the receiver, and put it on speaker.
"Yes Sir", came Shreyasi's voice.
"Can you get some of your magazines for Geet?", he asked.
"What magazines Sir?", asked a confused Shreyasi.
"Arey wahi" and stopped and laughed. "Arey wahi magazines jo tum padte ho", he said. "Whenever you are angry on me or sad that I yelled at you- you don't do any of my work and sit and read Femina and Filmfare know".
"Huh, how do you know?", she asked.
"I know I know!", he said. " Get those for Geet. She is in a similar state of mind right now", he said, with a lopsided smile.
"Angry or sad?", she asked.
"Both!", he said.
"Okay. I'll get them right away", she said, hanging up.
"I'm angry and sad is it? How do you know and what makes you think so?", she said, crossing her hands across her chest.
"Geet. I've known you for sometime now- to know how you behave in certain situations and I also know your reactions and responses. Well, anyways, you are Angry that I'm not eating and sad that I'm angry", he said, smiling.
