Chapter 10

Daadiji smiled. "Ok we'll go back two days later. I cant stay more than that", she said.

"You cant stay here more than that or you cant stay away from Maan more than two days", asked Devanshi.

Daadiji smiled broadly. "The second observation always holds true Devanshi".

Devanshi smiled. Everyone slowly got up and walked to their respective rooms.

"Saab, dinner?", asked Nakul, looking at his watch and wondering why Maan has not asked for his dinner.

"Nahin, rehne do. Bhook nahin hain", said Maan, while still resting on the recliner at the pool-side.

"Saab, lunch bhi theek se nahin kiya aapne", said Nakul.

"Haan, but bhook nahin hain, Nakul. Tum jao", said Maan.

"Theek hain saab", said Nakul, not wanting to argue with Maan. He had known Maan for many years now and hence also knew that once Maan had said something there would be no further changes to it.

Maan finished the little wine that was left in the glass. He thought of his schedule for the next day. "No one's at home, so perfect time to do some site visits in Ghaziabad, Noida and Gurgaon", he thought, quickly pulling out his phone and sending emails to Sasha and Shreyasi.

He quickly got a response from Sasha, "Sure MK. Great idea. I can join too".

He also received an email from Shreyasi and he knew the reply even before opening the email, "Sir, are you sure you want to visit those sites in this heat? I think you should take it easy. You've had a hectic week. I can reschedule the visits some other time for you. Think about it and lemme know".

Maan smiled. Exactly what he had expected of her. Somehow never got angry on her. She was practical and always gave him meaningful advice. She was right about going out and visiting the sites in the scorching heat after a hectic week- could be very tiring. But he would never get so much free time- if his family were in town. Daadima would be very angry if he stepped out for site visits and meeting clients on Saturdays atleast. So, he planned in such a way that he would only have to take calls, sign documents and cheques, go through designs on weekends rather than moving out of the city on official work.

"Shreyasi, schedule them for tomorrow and day after. I'll take care. Don't worry!" was his reply to Shreyasi's email.

To sasha he replied, "Yes, you can join in too. Please ask Adi to join us too. Since, he's taking care of the Noida site" and also copied Adi on it.

Sasha rolled her eyes at the mention of Adi, "Kabab mein haddi", she cribbed and went to sleep.

Maan too went to bed realizing he would have a busy day ahead. Everyone in the Handa House was asleep too, except for Daadima. Though the lights in the bedroom were switched off, she lay awake- staring blankly at the ceiling.

Her thoughts were of Maan. She thought of how his life changed in the last ten years. He was 18, when he dropped out of school to take up the family business, worked hard, and created an empire that even his dad wouldn't have ever dreamt of. At 24, Maan went back to school again- the same school that he had dropped out- London School of Economics.

She smiled when she remembered the conversation she had with him, after his parents death.

"Daadima, I've decided to take up the responsibilities of Khurana Constructions", he declared, one evening, a few days after his parents death, when Daadima was trying to co-ordinate the activities of Khurana Constructions.

Daadima looked at him surprised, "Maan, you still have two years in college"

"I can always go back to school, later", he said, calmly.

"No son! It's not that easy", said Daadima, putting the folder she was about to sign aside.

"Daadima, if it isn't easy then it makes it all the more enticing for me to follow that path and if it were easy then there should be no second thoughts on it", he said.

"Son, I can handle. You first finish your studies. London School of Economics is where you wanted to be and after a lot of hard work you've made it there. So,.." and he cut her. He walked to her, sat on the ground in front of her, and rested his head on her lap.

"If I want something I've always been persistent enough to pursue it. I can't see you struggle. You're the only one I have now. I cant afford to lose you. Dev needs you, Kiara needs you- they're still kids- Daadima, just leave this to me, I'll take care of this. You take care of us. I swear to you- I will never make you regret your decisions", he said, softly, looking up and holding her tender hands in his.

Daadima smiled, as a tear rolled down her eyes, "When will you finish your studies then?", she asked, him softly.

He smiled and wiped her tears that just rolled out of her eyes now, "Give me six years time. I will go back to school and finish my studies. Until then I will only concentrate on Khurana Constructions".

"Six years? Why six?", she asked.

"My favorite number", he said, "Now don't ask me why", he said and both laughed.

"Alright Maan, six years. But in this six years, if at any point of time- I feel that you are not meeting up to my expectations- I have all the rights to tell you to go back to school and I will take over the responsibilities of KC again. Is that understood?", she asked.

"Yes your highness", he said. "You can take over the responsibilities of KC anytime you want or give it to someone else anytime you want as per your wishes. I will not question your decisions. It is your company- not mine. I'm only taking care of it and growing it into a better company. However, I can also assure you, that such a situation will never arise. I will try not just to meet up to your expectations, but also exceed your expectations".

Savitri Singh Khurana was the proudest grandmother on the planet at that particular moment. Tears rolled down her eyes, every time she thought back those times, Maan stood by her like a rock and supported her from stumbling. He had fulfilled his promise- in six years time he not only stabilized the empire but also earned some trusted employees whom he could rely on, while he was away from KC. In those two- three years he was away from KC- he closely monitored the performance of his companies so that Daadima did not have to worry much about anything. He was right- he exceeded her expectations and she did not find the need to replace him for not taking care of the empire that her husband and she had built over a period.

She continued to stare at the ceiling smiling and wiping her tears away. She pulled her phone from the side table and texted him, "Maan, I love you Son!"

If Sasha had thought she could get some time with Maan alone- she got it wrong. She did not have a minute with Maan. He made her run from corner of the site to the other- asking her questions, clarifications and design processes and progress. She did not even have the time to stand and stare at things or take a break and drink some water and eat some food. While Maan had completely forgotten about food that weekend, in his attempt to finish the site visits, he gave Adi and Sasha, a tough time too. The only difference between their working patterns were- that Maan slogged all nights too that weekend, whereas Sasha and Adi found some time to eat and rest at night.

After going through some designs and budget propositions that night, he wanted to go and catch some sleep. It was 3:30 am and he had asked Sasha and Adi to see him, in office at 8:30am on Sunday. Their plan was to finish some discussions on other new ventures and then make it to Ghaziabad for a client meeting. Entire Saturday passed away, he did not find time to call his Daadima or Geet, and they did not call him either.

He set the alarm to 7:30 am and was about to put his phone aside when he saw the message notification on. He opened it and found his Daadima's message- that she had sent the previous night.

He smiled at the message and responded, "You walked into the past, then came back to reality and realized it's all fine now and texted me is it?"

He then moved onto checking the other messages from Shreyasi, Dev and Adi.

"Sir, there is a meeting with L&T. I'm fixing it for Tuesday- 10am" he read Shreyasi's message, "Yes, go ahead", he responded.

"Bro- hope the helpers in the mansion are doing fine! Na, Na- not my doubt- Geet wanted to know", was Dev's message. Maan shook his head rolling his eyes.

"Sir, I've emailed all the details regarding the new ventures I'm working on. We'll discuss them tomorrow", was Adi's message.

He had a couple of other messages- that he randomly went through like his credit card transaction details, back account details, some random advertisements, some updates regarding stock markets and other business news, some interesting quotes from some of his mentors etc etc. By the time he cleared his messages- he saw his Daadima's message again and looked at the time. It was 5:45am.

"Why are you up so late?" was her response.

"Talking to my girlfriend- extra martial affair you know", he responded. He would always get sarcastic when people asked him obvious questions.

"Yeah Right- extra martial and you? Maan- you're joking! Anyways, your work isn't over yet?"

"When you know work is what kept me awake- why do you ask why I was up so late?"

"With a hope that you might say something interesting"

"Nothing interests me more than work", he replied.

"Hmmm, oh well! cut it out and catch some sleep now", she said.

He did not respond. He put his phone aside and closed his eyes for a few minutes when his cell phone beeped again indicating a new message.

"Oho Daadima", he thought, checking his phone. "I'm really worried now. Are you taking care of yourself Son? I hope you are not slogging too hard in our absence"

"I'm fine. Don't worry", he texted her back, but she wasn't convinced.

She walked downstairs into the front yard of the Handas house and sat on the steps watching the sun rise. Geet, came to her with a cup of coffee.

"Daadiji, coffee", she said, sitting beside her.

"Thanks beta", said Daadima, smiling and taking the coffee.

"You've come down a little late today", said Geet, while sipping her coffee. Geet was an early riser when ever she was in HP. She loved to take a walk in the farms and watch the sun rise or just sit in the front yard and enjoy the cool breeze and the warmth of the early morning sun.

"Yea, was texting Maan", she said.

"Maan's awake too?", asked Geet, "It's a Sunday. He usually goes for a jog at 7am"

"Ah well he hasn't slept at all Geet", said Daadima.

"What? What was keeping him awake?", asked Geet, surprised.

Daadiji was about to say, "Wo'" and refrained herself from saying, "Work" and instead said, "I dunno sweety- if it was work or some person", turning sideways to look at Geet's expression. Geet's nose and cheeks had turned red from anger. Daadiji smirked.

Before Geet could get any further clarifications, her father called her and she walked away. Daadiji couldn't stop laughing. After giving her dad- some coffee- she went to her bedroom and looked at her phone. "Ek bhi message nahin kiya"

"Aap raat bhar kya kar rahen the?", she texted him. Maan was asleep at that point of time so did not reply immediately. Geet kept checking her phone every now and then but did not get a message. She was getting furious and restless.

It was 11:30 am and she could not resist anymore. She called him. Maan was in a meeting with Adi and Sasha. He saw Geet calling him and thought, "Ab yaad kaise kiya madam ne, mujhe"

He excused himself and answered the call, "Yes", not taking the name as Sasha and Adi were seated in front of him.

"I sent you a text in the morning"

"Hmmm, so?", he said.

"You are supposed to reply"

"I did not see it- other wise I would have", he said. Sasha and Adi meanwhile were working on some budget proposition- when Maan heard Sasha say, "It will work to $1.8 million".

"What's keeping you so busy?", asked Geet and Maan had obviously not heard her question since he was listening to Sasha and Adi's discussion.

"Sasha", he said.
