Deepika fortunate to be Prakash Padukone's daughter: Gavaskar

Kolkata, May 25: Hailing former All England champion Prakash Padukone as "the greatest sportsman India has produced", cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar Saturday said actor Deepika Padukone is lucky to be the badminton player's daughter.

"Deepika is the daughter of who, in my view, is the greatest sportsman India has produced. She is fortunate to have the same genes," Gavaskar said at the Eden Gardens, which hosted the second Indian Premier League (IPL) qualifier between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals.

Prakash Padukone was a national badminton champion and won the coveted All-England Championship in 1980 and became the first Indian to do so.

He was honoured with the Arjuna award in 1972 and Padmashree a decade later.

The batting genius felt it would be an honour to be in Deepika's presence, by virtue of her legacy.

"If I can't be anywhere near Prakash, at least if I can be with Deepika. Then I will say, 'there you are, Prakash's daughter',"added Gavaskar.

Deepika is also related to one of the finest directors in Hindi cinema..

The surname, Padukone.
Guru Dutt was born Vasanth Kumar Shivsankar Padukone

Call it a rishta by satellite. But prolific filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi is related to Deepika Padukone. "We're both descendent of the great Guru Dutt. Deepika and I are Saraswat Brahmins. Her family and mine can be traced back to Kashmir. We're basically evicted Kashmiri Pundits who migrated to Bangalore. If you remember my uncle Guru Dutt (who was my mother painter Lalita Lajmi's brother) and Deepika's father Prakash Padukone are both settled in Bangalore. Deepika is definitely related to me. Though she doesn't know it. But I hope she knows about me"

India will only get a tennis "great" when he, or she, wins a "Grand Slam". In my opinion, only one Indian has been an individual world-beater, though in a different sporting discipline, namely badminton. And that was Prakash Padukone, father of actress Deepika. He won the All-England title, widely considered as the world championships in which all the top players compete. He had the two qualities I mentioned earlier: Fitness and motivation. I rest my case.

^^Sigh these days every one can be bought..In Kolkata, Gavaskar pocketed some money?🤔

P.S. Some would still say Gavaskar is the greatest..he was the first legend in India
