It's graduation time in Mystic Falls. There will be no big snake demon to swallow the mayor, as in Buffy. No, on "Vampire Diaries," it's vampires and hybrids back from the dead.
Bonnie is dead, and yet she's back and she can make phone calls. She says that maybe they should cancel graduation because of the Full Moon and the crazy triangle expression. Her sexy grandmother, Jasmine Guy, tells her to make sure to say her goodbyes. (on a separate note, why is the Cosby Show on streaming and not "A Different World? So. Wrong.)
Elena is with Jeremy. She's happy, even if they may only have one day. She might not have that long because the Vampire Hunter Connor is after her. He threatens to blow up the bar, but Alaric stops him.
Everyone is threatening to blow everything up. Matt is standing on an explosive device thanks to Rebekah's ex, Alexander. Rebekah says she's going to save Matt or they'll be ghosts together on the other side.
Katherine is mad at Bonnie because she's not immortal. She threatens to get rid of Elena if she doesn't get what she wants.
Damon gives Elena the cure. She says she can't take it. The sire bond is gone. Elena's emotions are back. Lexi wants to know if the real emotions are for Stefan. He says Elena is the love of his life and he'd go back in a heartbeat.
Damon was shot by Galen, formerly dead, who was a member of the Five. The bullet was laced with werewolf venom so he's dying slowly. Elena tells Damon to take the cure. Or they have to find Klaus in New Orleans.
Matt and Rebekah share a kiss and they switch spots so Matt can get to graduation. Jeremy also wants Elena to go to graduation. Everybody is there! Bonnie is a little sad when her dead self crosses the stage and takes the diploma from her dad. As Bonnie is sitting there, all the people who died for her expression triangle are there. Kol wants her to drop the expression triangle completely so they can come back.
Bonnie says she wants to come back too but that's not going to happen.
While looking for Silas, Galen shoots Damon twice more, before Alaric shows up, snaps Galen's neck and takes the cure back.
Caroline is calling Klaus and calling Klaus, and then – he shows up at graduation. Damon is saved.
Lexi and Alaric are trying to figure out what's next. Lexi says she thinks once she's served their time they can move on. Alaric says he can't move on until the people they love have their lives straight.
Elena thanks Stefan for not giving up on her. She gives Stefan the cure. How has someone not broken that glass vial yet? Then she has a chat with Damon. He says he's selfish and he makes bad choices that hurt Elena. He says he's so wrong for her. Elena says she's not sorry either, even if it's made her question everything.
She says Damon has been a terrible person but that she loves him. There's schmooching. Stefan hears everything.
Klaus and Caroline are having a chat. Klaus says Tyler is free to return to Mystic Falls, and that Tyler is her first love but he's going to be her last. Very romantic.
The veil is beginning to close. Bonnie did one last spell to bring Jeremy back and he's alive. But Bonnie is still dead.
Bonnie wants Jeremy to tell Elena and Caroline that she's spending the summer with her mom. Then she walks away through the mirror with her grams.
Rebekah shows up to make up with Matt. At first he says his love life has to be a low-vampire zone. Then they're off on a road trip.
Katherine and Elena are fighting in the school because Katherine is mad that Elena gets all the prom and graduation and everything. She says Elena steals all her happiness. She stabs Elena in the neck. As Elena is dying, she flashbacks to Stefan giving her the cure. She shoves the cure into Katherine's mouth. Ha ha now Katherine is human.
Silas was stone but now he's back because Bonnie died. He becomes Stefan's doppelganger and then throws Stefan in a safe and tosses it in the ocean.
Wait, so now Silas is walking around as Stefan? Nooo.
Next fall: The Originals starts, a Vampire Diaries in New Orleans as it were. So were you surprised by the ending? What do you think will happen with Katherine now that she's human? And will anyone figure out Stefan is Silas?
