Movie stars shine on freedom fiesta
- By Dimple Choudhary

It was the spirit of freedom and presence of celebs that made the audience throng the event E-Watan Tere Liye at Talkatora Stadium to mark 58 years of freedom. The gala ceremony was attended by politician Madan Lal Khurana, Shatrughan Sinha, actors Dharamendra and Reena Roy and singers Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet Sawant and Ravinder Ravi.

Ahsaan Bhaarti with his ventriloquist skills spellbound the audience as he voiced the sound of ghungroos. Astounding dance performances by Isabele Anna, a kathak dancer from Paris and Balle Ni Balle dance troop set the patriotic mood rolling.

Some of the martyr's family members were awarded with Rashtriya Gaurav Praskaar at the ocassion.

While each of the performances oozed exuberance, it was Abhijeet Sawant's Mera Rang De Basanti Chola and Kar Chale Hum Fida that swept the crowd off their feet. Dharampaaji stole the show with his words of wisdom. "India and Pakistan have realised that they are one. After all these years, I hope both the nations would celebrate their festivals together," he said.

Abhijeet Sawant, 24
Winner, Indian Idol contest

'I am one of the proudest Indians in our country'
Ishould be one of the proudest Indians in our country. I say so because it is only because of Indians that I became 'Sony Indian Idol'.

For me loving one's own country is like loving one's own mother. Our country is like our mother. I feel every Indian must feel proud to be an Indian.

Since I am a singer, there are two songs that really move my heart on this occasion -- 'Kar Chale Hum Fida' sung by Mohammad Rafi for the film Haqeeqat, and 'Mera Rang De Basanti Chola' which Sonu Nigam sang. The song was first sung for the film Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

For us Independence Day signifies the fact that we gained our freedom from slavery and began as a new nation.

August 15 is one of the happiest days of my life since we Indians were liberated that day. In my opinion every Indian must realise the importance of this day.

We all must remember the sacrifices our countrymen made to make us free. It is important for us to understand the pains they underwent to fight against the colonial British rule. We should salute and recall their bravery and sacrifices.

Abhijeet Sawant spoke to Syed Firdaus Ashraf
