I was bored.
And sleep less.
It's 12:15 in the morning, and I find myself walking down the stairs, rolling my shoulders and thinking of a midnight snack.
Not surprisingly I hear the TV running, and smile'papa again. He's a bit of night owl; often working late into the night, or simply watching TV long after ma and I go off to sleep. How he stays up so late, and wakes up so early, I have no idea'.
I walk into the room, thinking of chatting with him for a while and stop in surprise.
Ma's awake'and the two of them are seated cozily together; so close that I couldn't figure out where Ma's straight hair ended and where papa's curly hair began.
"Woopsie'!" I thought, blushing and backing away quietly.
Unfortunately, just as I was turning to leave, my elbow knocked the door in a loud thud, making me gasp in pain.
Immediately, papa lifts his head 'but only for a second. He bends his head down quickly, his voice muffled when he said "Hello princess'"
"Hi" I replied, rubbing my throbbing elbow.
"What are you doing standing over there Mukta?" Ma asks, sounding distracted and still not lifting her head. "Come on over here".
I moved forward curiously; now really confused about their behavior'why aren't they looking at me or even lifting their heads??
Moving around the couch, I finally see what has them preoccupied, and I stop and stare.
*blink*
The IPad that they held between them is the reason why they were seated so close together. And them playing an intense game of fruit ninja being the reason why neither of them was willing to lift their heads.
Suddenly ma gasped, and her side of the screen froze, indicating that she had lost that round.
"It's not fair! How is it that you win every time?!" she grumbled, making a face at him, and leaning back against the couch; flexing her fingers.
"It's child's play" he says nonchalantly, stretching his arms out and trying to pretend that he didn't actually enjoy winning. But it's in his eyes; the sparkle of victory'and in his smile, the satisfied little tug around his lips.
Suddenly, ma grabs my hand, and I nearly squeaked in surprise.
"Ma? what'"
"Wait, wait! She's going to play for me in the next round'girls versus boys. What do you say, Mukta?" she asks, her eyes shining with newfound excitement.
"What "boys"?" papa laughs, "I'm the only boy here" he says, making a face at the word.
"It doesn't matter" ma says airily, grinning at me.
"Yeah...I'll win anyway" papa says with a laugh. Then turning towards me, he waves his fingers and says "what do you say princess? My fingers could use the exercise?"
I look at his hands, his large and capable hands that, even as I watch, reached to hold ma's hands; gently rubbing away the soreness in her hands with his fingers and then lacing them loosely with hers.
I look up into their faces, and see them watching me expectantly.
"Bet I'll win'uh-gain" he says, an eyebrow raised, a challenge in his eyes.
My own eyes shining in challenge, I settle down besides them and smile at ma, holding out my palm. Laughing we high-fived and prepared for battle'challenge accepted!
