I actually wondered about this because what roll does a debate perform in real life.....

For me

A Debate is with two teams discussing over a particular subject from opposite angles....

A discussion is a group of people discussing over a topic to get to single conclusion

When we take a topic, one side is always considered strong as it is generally accepted by public while other side has to put in more efforts....and getting conclusion is difficult..... The trend now has started for group discussions whether in TV programs or recruitment procedures, which teaches us in group binding and sharing views to get to a conclusion.....

Similarly Does Debate serve any purpose in real life.... Does it give any further knowledge than hearing the two sides as the conclusion is not made most of the times.....

So thought of discussing this with my friends here😃

Nice topic!!!

I like discussions more compared to debates.Because debates takes somuch time.Another thing!! When I see an issue I like thinking on both sides of the issue.I cannot support only one side all the time.

Cheers,

U r right.... the same thing happened in the DC.... I can't speak against truth as it is universal principle..... but to be in the other team... even if I say anything for truth the other team will bombard usšŸ˜†

I really like discussions because

1. U can speak both ways....

2. U are not as adamant to prove ur point as the case with debate

3. U are not forced to keep a view

4. It ends with a result most probably😃

I love discussion better than debates.
1. In debate one team win and other loose. I don't like competitions and winning loosing just for having for different views/openion.
2. In debate one tries to block their mind and ONLY support for what they are debating on. While on Discussion I get to change my openion if at any poiont I find opposite person conviencing. It short, it is all about being flexible and after discussion getting to point to what is right for you.
3. in debates you know there is one possible result. In discussion there are possibility to come up with third or fourth result something you never thought about when you got started.

hmm ... why is it thought so that we don't reach a conclusion in debate? šŸ˜•

In a debate, different angles come in hand and the debaters are not the ones to decide which point is more powerful ;they just need to prove their point. The public/judges decide what is more powerful.

Debates in a way ... are a specialized approach to reach a point of agreement. They can be useful.. but it highly depends on the opponents ; how tolerant are they and .. they don't have this thing in mind "If you don't agree, you are wrong, and you HAVE to accept my opinion" 🤢 🤢 ...thank GOD, DM has got tolerant debaters šŸ‘

Discussion is more situation oriented i.e. a decision making process.

I guess both methods work beautifully... it only depends on situation as which method suits the best. 😊

Well Sowmyaa di.. i think that promotes competitive environment with further persues people to bring out the best in them 😊

I remember during DC lll ... our team worked on rebuttals for preparation as one person was providing rebuttals and other 2 were countering them.. because if we don't work on the other points (like what the other party can use/say/give example) we REALLY can't think of any rebuttals.

Is this going to be a debate or discussion? šŸ˜• šŸ˜†

For practical purposes I like discussions as debates get off track more often not.

I think debates are more effective, we have got ability to speak in front of any one about both views of topic. It increase our thinking power twice.

IMO, Debates are more effective. They force you to think about a single alternative from every possible angle before you even think of discarding it.

Yes, it does happen that with debates you argue about extremes. But, I feel that without experimenting with the extremes, you can never reach a middle ground.

Even when you talk about "discussions"...an interesting discussion is one where there are clearly different alternatives and every person argues in favour of his/her alternative.
