autanki Saala - A 9 Cr. Production budget and the collections are profitable
By Satish Sundaresan, Apr 20, 2013 - 11:04 IST

In a week filled with some exciting IPL matches, the much awaited, Bhushan Kumar and Rohan Sippy's Nautanki Saala, starring the nation's latest heartthrob Ayushmann Khurana alongwith Kunal Roy Kapur stood its ground at the box office, with the week's collections at Rs. 19 crores. In a time where its not just collections, but the economics of cinema that matter, the key question is did the film turn profitable for its producers. As we find out the film makers are very pleased with its performance and have indeed made the economics work for them and the trade. Here's how.

Talking to Bollywood Hungama about the film's economics, T-Series' head honcho Bhushan Kumar said, "While Nautanki Saala was made at a budget of Rs. 9 crores, we put around Rs. 7 crores in the promotions, and we got Rs. 9 crores in the recovery. With the satellite rights getting Rs. 9 crores and another Rs. 2 crores from the music rights, the film has proved to be a winner in all the aspects." He added that, "There were rumors floating in the market that the film was made at Rs. 15 - 16 crores, plus P & A, which is totally untrue. Since we had shot the film in just 40 days, it only means that it was a well budgeted film. If you take the economics of the cost versus recovery, the producers, co-producers and distributors are earning from this film. As per the price involved, Nautanki Saala has been a very big hit for us."

When we spoke to T-Series' Vinod Bhanushali about the film's B-O status since it got mixed reviews, he smilingly said, "Despite the film getting mixed reviews, yeh to Commando se upar hi chal rahi hai." Lastly, when asked about the 'secret' to the film's success, he said, "Music, marketing and distribution have played a very important role in the success of the film".

From being the country's largest music company to now a committed film Studio, T-Series' Films is preparing for Nautanki's second week at the theaters, whilst preparing to bring their next franchise, the much awaited Aashiqui 2 to cinema audiences the world over. The music of the film has already hit the top charts and their partnerships with Vishesh Films and the Bhatts is encouraging them to give viewers another delightful cinematic experience in the same month.

^^^So much justification? That itself looks fishy. 😆
Anyways TBH Ayushman bigger test is the YRF movie with Sonam. If Nautanki Sala would have clicked like VD it would have given him a big boost but its average performance wont result in writing him off.

He is okay. If it would have done well, it would have been great for him but I don't think he's done just because it was an average or whatever. VD worked because of its script and everything came together well. It's not always possible to have a script like that. Anyways, Ayushman must have a 3 film deal with YRF and that film with Sonam is definitely more important.

It seems like both Ayushman-Arjun won't have that great 2nd films. Arjun perhaps because it seems like YRF has forgotten Aurangzeb exists. 🤔

Commando and Nautanki Saala Week One Business

Filed under: Bollywood Charts ' Leave a commentApril 19, 2013
Commando's first week domestic net collection were in the region of Rs. 17.5 crores. The film has done well in single screens especially in Bihar, CP and CI territories. Some multiplexes in Mumbai have also done a decent business. The distributor's share for the film for the first week will hence be around 9 crores which is decent but the film needs another 4 ' 5 crores to break even as the budget is around 15 crores. If it collects that then Commando will be an average fare else it will be losing.
Nautanki Saala's first week domestic net box-office is around Rs. 16.5 crores. The majority of the collections have from Mumbai and Mysore circuit followed by Delhi and Punjab circuit. It is said that the producers of Nautanki Saala have already made their money by selling the all India rights to Wave Distributors who have bought the film's rights in 12 crores. The producers have also earned from Satellite and other rights. But Wave will lose money as Nautanki Saala will not be able to do a business of 24 crores. Hence, Nautanki Saala will be a below average fare for the distributors.
Both films are not likely to add much in their second week as there is a huge reduction in the number of screens.

NAUTANKI SAALA Completes Week One With 18.60 Cr Nett

"Nautanki Saala" held up well over the weekend and on Monday film showed some hope. But film started dropping heavily from there on.

Film collected 18.60 cr nett in week one and after huge screen reduction film will struggle to cross even 21 cr nett. Film will finish with share of 10 cr which is below par. Film''s niche appeal plus competition with "Commando" and to an extent with "Chashme Baddoor" cost it dearly.

Film will go down as strictly average affair at box office though makers will make money through ancillary revenues.

Below are the collections for the film -
