"So Taani," Rey said, "Toh main bhi sone jaate hoon. Good Night." "Good night!" Taani said, giving him her sweetest but murderous goodnight smile.

Taani, too, went to her room. She wasn't sleepy yet and hence decided to read some book. She was soon absorbed in her book. It was midnight when she finally closed her book. "Kitchen mein jaake paani piker aati hoon pehle." she thought and got up from her bed. Shen went to the kitchen and drank a glass of water. She was about to enter her room again, when she saw the night lights in the room where Rey was sleeping, turning on and off. "Rey abhi tak soye nahi?" she whispered to herself.

She went near the door of Rey's room and knocked. She received no response. She pushed open the door a little and peeked inside. She saw Rey, lying on his back, turning the lights on and off, and thinking about something intently. "Rey?" she called softly. He might have heard, but he didn't respond.

Taani went inside. Rey noticed her and sat up. Taani went near the bed and sat on the edge, beside Rey. "Rey? Koi problem hai? Aap abhi tak soye nahi." she asked gently. Rey was looking down, as if someone had caught him doing wrong. He also looked very sad. Taani asked, "Neend nahi aa rahi?"

"No." He answered. "Kuch help karoon?" Taani was speaking very gently. Many people who met her said that her soft voice very calming. She wanted to put all of the calming property of her voice to work, just to calm Rey down, because he looked really miserable.

Rey turned and faced her. He asked, "Taani, tum mere Dad ke baare mein janti ho?"

"No."

"Woh na iss duniya ke sabse bade mean aur selfish insaan hai!"

"Rey? Aap aisa kyu keh rahe hai?" Taani was surprised to hear speak like this about his own Dad. But after what Rey's Dad had done today to him, she shouldn't expect any positive reaction.

"Tumne dekha na Dad ne aaj kya kiya? Just because main apne first national level ke prize ke baareme batane unke office gaya. Who reacts like this to a prize?" Tears trickled down his face. He looked at Taani and said, "I'm sorry." He held his head in his hands and tried to blink back the tears that were threatening to spill out of his eyes.

Taani gently removed Rey's hands. She rested her hand on his cheek, wiped a tear with her thumb and said, "Rokiye mat apne aap ko. Jitna gussa, bhadhas, pain, jo kuch hai, sab bahar nikal dijiye."

Rey broke down and hugged her tightly. Taani was taken aback by Rey's sudden outburst but she smiled and hugged him back. His temperature was high. Taani thought, "Hey Krishnaji! Rey ko to bukhar hai! Inke mood ke vajah se shayad bukhar chadha hai. Ye toh hona hi tha. Itna tension lenge toh aur kya hoga."

Rey told Taani all about his father. He told Taani how his Dad and he never had a normal father-son relation as most people do. His father never had time for him. All that mattered for his Dad was his business. Whenever Rey hesitated, Taani would encourage him to continue.

Taani looked at the clock. It was 2:30am. She said, "Rey, 2:30 ho gaye hai. Aap so jaiye, warna subah uthoge nahi, aur aankhein aisi suji hui nazar ayengi. phir sabko pata chal jayegi ki aap raat bhar soye nahi, aur woh aapko sad dekhkar sad ho jayenge. You don't want that, do you?"

Taani made him lie down, pulled the blanket over him, and said with a smile, "Sweet dreams." Rey grabbed her hand, and said, "Taani, please, mere sone tak yahi ruko. Tum hogi toh zyada secure feel karunga."

"Okay." Taani sat down, with Rey still holding her hand.

Taani thought about everything Rey had told her. What Rey had gone through in his childhood was just horrible, and it was pure injustice to him. What kind of person was his father, who thought that his business was far more important than his son was? Having no father was better than having a father like this. This made Taani remember her own Dad and brought tears to her eyes. She leaned on the headboard of the bed and tried to blink back the tears by closing her eyes tightly.

The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was the sunlight streaming in the room through the window. Her first instinct was to get up, but she couldn't. Rey's arm was around her waist, and their fingers tightly entwined. She tried getting up, but Rey pulled her closer. Taani looked at Rey. He was still deep asleep. With a great difficulty, Taani loosened his grip and got up.

She thought, "Taani, tujhe kya ho gaya hai? Yahi so gayi? Lekin maine jan bujhkar thodina kiya ye. Galti se so gayi yahi par. But begtar yahi hoga ki jo hua uske baare mein Rey ko pata na chalein. Unke paas already bahot problems hai cope karne ke liye."

Precisely at the moment, Rey woke up. He said, "Are Taani? Itni subah subah yahan?"

Taani quickly said, "Haan woh aap uthe nahi na, toh dekhne aa gayi. Ab kuch thik lag raha hai? Aap ko kal thoda bukhar tha."

Rey remembered what happened the night before. He quickly went towards Taani and held her by her shoulders and said in a stern voice, "Taani, kal raat maine Tumhe jo kuch bhi bataya, woh tum kisiko nahi bataogi. Promise me."

Taani snapped at him, "Aapko sach mein lagta hai ki main kisiko bataungi?"

"Nahi lagta, magar phir bhi. Promise me."

"Okay. I promise."

"Thanks."

"Ab chalein? Bhai kisi bhi waqt uth jayenge!"

Taani got ready and came out in the living room. She found Swayam and Rey already there. Swayam said, "Kya Taani? Kitna waqt laga diya. Ab chalo warna late ho jayega." They left for the college.

In the college –

The gang was waiting for them in the canteen. The moment Taani entered, Sharon grabbed her aside and asked, "Rey kaisa hai?" Taani smiled and said, "Relax Sharon. He's fine. Bilkul thik hai woh."

"Okay." Sharon said, but she didn't look like she believed Rey was fine. But Taani knew her best friend very well. She put her hands round her shoulder and said, "Relax Sharon! Main jhoot bol rahi hoon kya tujhse? He's fine!"

"Ya, okay!" Now Sharon looked assured.

Taani said cautiously, "Waise Sharon, tera aur Bhai ka jhagada ho gaya hai."

"What! Mera aur Swayam ka-"

"Itni jor se nahi! Dhire bol."

"Mera aur Swayam ka jhagada! Kab hua?"

"Kal raat. Jab tum dono phone pe baat kar rahe the."

"Taani, kya keh rahi ho?" She turned to go towards Swayam, "Mujhe Swayam se baat karni padegi."

"Are Sharon, Sharon. Waise waala jhagada nahi. Tum logo ke jhagade ke baaremein toh Bhai bhi nahi jaante."

"Aisa kaisa jhagada hai jiske baaremein Swayam aur mujhe, dono ko pata nahi hai?"

"Are kal raat tune phone kiya tha na mujhe, aur Rey ke baare mein puch rahi thi. Tab maine kya kaha tha, 'Ab tak toh normal lag rahe hai. Aur, kuch problem hua na, toh I'll fix him up.' Right?"

"Yes."

"Woh Rey ne sun liya!"

"What! Taani tu pagal ho gayi hai! Rey ke samne bol diya?"

Swayam called them, "Taani, Sharon, kya khusur pusur kar rahe ho dono?"

Taani replied quickly, "Kuh nahi Bhai. Hum aate hai." and they went to the gang sitting at a table.
