On a hot afternoon, Karan Johar is ensconced in the Khar office of his production house Dharma. This is the space where he spends the most time. "I live, breathe and eat my production house," he says, as he gestures around the neat, corporate-looking room. No film memorabilia adorns the walls, except for a stack of posters from upcoming Gippi and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
"This is my only hobby and my only occupation," says Karan. "There's not much else besides this that I do — I'm married to my job, my production house, and it's like having a family of my own in my team," he adds.
Of course, for Karan, it's always been "about loving your family". It is evident that his proxy family means a great deal to him. He admits he's obsessive about the company's upkeep, and speaks passionately about mentoring young talent. "It is a conscious decision to launch newcomers in my movies. It's important to me to promote new talent, put it out there," Karan says.
Launching new talent has also meant that Karan hasn't made a film recently with old favourite Shah Rukh Khan — fuelling the talk of a rift between the former friends. In fact, recent reports have even claimed that Karan has signed SRK's archrival Salman Khan for a project. Karan shrugs off the speculation. "When you know there is no element of truth in a story, it doesn't affect you. I wish people would be more careful about what they write. There are so many forms of media out there, how much can you control?"
Unbending a little, Karan confirms that Rohit Shetty is definitely directing a Dharma film, but the cast hasn't been confirmed yet. "So reports of Salman coming on board for that project are untrue," he adds.
Apart from the Rohit Shetty film, there's a lot more Karan and Dharma have to offer this year. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Hansi Toh Phasee, Unglee and Two States are among them. Karan says he only greenlights films that he can believe in at the screenplay level: "I have to like the stories and the people working on it."
