It had been 6 months since shiv had shifted to bangalore.He had left home without telling anyone where he was going to.He had just left a note in gauri's name where he had written that he was leaving for good,they shouldn't bother to look for him and he hoped she would have a better life with shashank.
Shiv always had a nagging doubt that gauri loved shashank, during their ordeal in the jungle she had said she could never trust anyone as much as she had trusted shashank.
Shiv had vowed to find out why shashank had ditched her at the altar. The entire devika fiasco made shiv soften up considerably towards gauri.He couldn't believe someone could be so selfless. She knew her father would be shattered if he heard abt their divorce, yet she had willingly signed the divorce papers to get him out of trouble. At that point shiv felt gauri had accepted him. He promised himself that he would be better behaved with gauri and atleast give the marriage a shot. Maybe love wouldn't come immediately but maybe they could test the footholds of friendship. He began being more pleasant to her, taking her out to lunches and dinners…he got to know her likes and dislikes. Surprisingly she knew everything about his tastes. She loved the movies..those soft mushy senseless romantic ones….precisely the ones which he hated…he preferred the action or thriller genre…she had actually hoodwinked him into seeing A Walk to Remember….boy !! was that hard to watch or what ! She on the other hand cried a lot (A LOT) during the movie…it amused him to no length..he laughed at her innocence yet he liked it…it just made her even more likeable. At end of two months shiv was to great lengths smitten by gauri…for one, he couldn't do a single thing without her. Secondly her way of thinking (something which he had hated in the beginning) was pulling him towards her. She had taught him a lot during the 6 months of their marriage. He was glad they weren't divorced as he had planned to in the initial phase of their marriage.
Dada dadi's 60th anniversary was coming up.. Shiv planned to tell gauri that he liked her immensely and that they should take their relationship one step up from being friends. He was sure the attraction was mutual. He bought this really expensive sari as a gift for her (she had liked the sari at the store, but refused to buy it cos of the exorbitant price tag). He was gonna give it to her and confess his feelings. During the festivities his granddad kept saying how lucky he was to have found his soulmate in his grandmom….for some reason shiv felt happy…he felt as if he had found his soulmate in gauri. He kept looking for opportunities to give gauri the gift…but was always unsuccessful cos some family member or the other and was ribbed for loving and missing his wife so much. All the while with a fake smile plastered on his face he kept thinking how he would never get close to loving his wife if these people kept interrupting.
Finally on the eve of the wedding he got his chance. He was to get something from the room gauri was in…and he was sure she was alone…He grabbed the chance lest someone else should take it. He sped with the gift to gauri. He was just about to enter when he saw gauri intently looking at something. It was a photo album. He wondered what photographs she was looking at, when she shifted and he could see that they were photos of her and shashank together….he could see the hint of tears in her eyes…
It shattered him…after all this while she was still in love with shashank. How could he have missed it. What he mistook as feelings for him was actually reserved for shashank.
He was filled with grief…she didn't love him…she didn't love him.
He moved away from the room and tried to mask his sadness….he was heartbroken….but he didn't want to ruin the mood for everyone. He somehow went through all the rituals, though he wasn't aware of what was happening. He was acutely aware of the motions his body was following but his heart was somewhere else. That night when he looked at gauri on the bed (their new sleeping arrangement where each took a week of sleeping on the floor) he could just begin to imagine what she was going through. If he was so sad of not getting her, how sad would she be to have not got shashank and in addition be stuck with him for eternity ! he cursed himself for giving her so much pain. She wanted shashank by her side not him. He once again resolved to get shashank back into her life. He would do anything for her happiness….anything.
The next day a determined shiv planned to talk to his father about their situation, he knew his parents loved gauri as if she were their own daughter. He was sure they would place her happiness before anything else. As he walked towards his parents' room he heard snatches of their conversation. He paused to listen more clearly. What he heard shook his world. He never imagined this…never in a million years. He thought he and gauri were the only ones putting up a faade..turned out that his parents were too.They had planned to getting him married to gauri all along. They knew they had to do it discreetly or else it would inherit suspicion. Apparently gauri was an heiress to a large fortune, a fortune that her mother had left her…that would be split with her husband once she got married. They had gotten shashank engaged to gauri and had always planned on him not reaching the wedding where the oh so good kapoors would get their only son..their billionaire son married to the daughter of a poor ved. What they hadn't anticipated was shashank falling in love with gauri…so they had a tough time getting rid of him…and now shashank was back threatening to tell. Nikhila consoled her husband saying that gauri would never believe him and she had no clue about her fortune. The only people aware of this were the two of them,devika and shashank. Not even her father knew about this. He was indebted to them for life and would never believe any claims of them cheating him. Shiv felt disgusted with his parents..he couldn't believe they would stoop to such low levels only for money. He knew they were going thru a rough phase regarding their finances…but that dint justify any of this. He was angry that he and gauri were mere pawns in this whole game. He had to find shashank and get him together with gauri. After the wedding ceremony shiv hurried to the hotel where his father had said shashank was staying. He met shashank and explained the entire situation to him, how gauri still loved him and how she deserved to be with him after all shes been through. Shashank reasoned that gauri would never believe why he had left her, shiv assured him that true love begets all the trust and that though she would find it hard to believe she will in the end. He handed shashank the sari he had bought for her and told him to gift it to her as she had liked it a lot. He just requested shashank to wait for a day so that he could disappear. He couldn't bear the thought of her with someone else in front of his eyes. Shashank readily agreed. The next morning shiv left home leaving behind no trace, just a note for gauri.
He came back to reality as someone knocked on his cabin door. It was his secretary who informed him about the upcoming videoconference. In the 6 months in Bangalore, he had set up an IT firm and dealt with only clients abroad so he would avoid running into anyone he remotely knew from his family or friends circle. He named his company after gauri. Shivgauri enterprises..Atleast here in name they could be together, if not in reality. He missed her sorely but kept telling himself it was all for the good. He had actually started watching mushy movies since it made him feel as if she were around. He had contemplated calling her on several occasions but refrained from doing so. Today was a day when he missed her terribly. It was their wedding anniversary….their first one. He was engulfed in sadness…he stared at the photograph from the wedding, which stood, on his desk. When shiv had left he had taken only three things with him, his wedding album, the framed photo gifted by ipshita and this painted kurta which gauri had made for him. Shiv looked at the photograph and tears welled up in his eyes…as he got up to leave for the conference, his hand nudged the frame and it shattered. Shiv felt as if he was shattered into a hundred pieces. Of all the days for this to happen ! as he picked up the broken shards of glass he noticed an envelope lodged in the frame at the back of the photograph. Something he had never noticed before.
It had his name on it with the ever so familiar handwriting. His hands shivered as he opened it …it read :
My dearest shiv,
Im writing this because I don't have the courage to look at you and tell you this. I love you , I love you with all my heart and soul. I don't exactly know when I began to love you. But if I attempt to look back I think I can trace the first seed of liking to the day when you exposed my grandmom's plans. You had shied away from the divorce, something that you sorely wanted just to prove my integrity. After that day you were a different person, you were kind, sweet,caring. You told me that we would be friends and that's how it started. I enjoyed your company, u constantly made me laugh, were concerned if anything happened to me. I still remember you taking 4 days off from your work just because I was running a fever. You not only became my best friend, but also you became the closest to my heart. I am telling you this now, I cant live without you, I cant fathom a life without you. Our marriage was based on deceit…your parents got us married for my mother's money. That very night when you exposed my grandmom, she came back with adequate proof to prove this. I'm sure you don't know about this. She loved him !!!!!!!!!! omg omg omg she loved him….his heart did a little dance and he barely controlled himself from shouting out loud…wow…his wife loved him….WOW…..WOW…..he couldn't understand how the letter had got into the frame and why he had never noticed it before. He wondered why gauri hadn't given it to him…he sat back in his chair and took in the happiness…when the magnitude of his stupidness struck him…he had just left her w/o an explanation what so ever…just a little note wishing her happiness with shashank. He had thought she would hate him if she ever got to know the circumstances of their marriage …but here not only did she kno beforehand…she never uttered a word…and the end of it all loved him….! What a fool he was….why hadn't he talked to gauri before leaving…why didn't he ever think things through !!….he wondered if she was still waiting for him..prolly not…if not anything else, his abrupt departure was sure to have hurt her…she would never forgive him….the glimmer of the happiness which momentarily lit a ray of hope in shiv's heart gave out….He had to meet her…he had to meet her and he had to do it today…there were no two ways about it…saying this to himself, he called his secretary and told her to cancel all meetings for a week….and book him on the earliest flight to mumbai….though puzzled she carried out his instructions and within the hour shiv was on his way to mumbai. All through his flight he kept thinking how he would meet gauri and what would he tell her….finding her was the first thing…he was sure she wouldn't have continued stayin at kapoor house…she would have surely moved out..he wondered how he could find her!! On landing in mumbai shiv tried calling her cell…but the no. no longer existed. Then it struck him to call anupam, calling his family was just out of question….he quickly dialed anupam's no only to be greeted by the voice mail msg. He left a msg explaining his situation and that anupam was to call back asap. Anupam called up at the end of an hour which seemed like the longest hour of shiv's life ! first thing he did was severely reprimand shiv for disappearing the way he did !" who does that…do u know how worried we were…we left no stone unturned to find u…how could u shiv…how cud u put us thru all this…and gauri…u know how heartbroken she was ?? ur an A class idiot shiv…" " dada..im sorry..i really am…but u don't know the circumstances I left in….forget all that…I need to find gauri…where is she…? Do u kno her whereabouts ?"
" gauri..why do u want gauri now ? shes happy…without you…let her be…shes with shashank just like you wanted….after u left…shashank came and told us that you didn't love gauri and that u wanted him to be a part of her life….though in the initial couple of months gauri refused and kept thinking of you…later we all persuaded to marry shashank…she agreed and now shes happy…so don't go ruining that…."

It was all dark In the house and shiv couldn't find the switches…he cursed under his breath as he bumped into numerous bits of furniture….suddenly in the dark a voice rang out " Happy anniversary my dearest husband…happy wedding anniversary…" the lights came on…and he saw gauri across him standing in the same saree he had bought her ages ago…she was smiling…he was too stunned to say anything…"gauri….ur here…but dada said…." U think only u have the right to trouble me….when u called anupam today I was with him….we planned this whole thing out….it was payback time shiv..she said winking…how could u think that I wud get married to shashank…I love u….u bonehead..she came over to him and lightly kissed him on the cheek…so how did u like the idea ??"….after much thought he pulled her towards him and said…mindblowing…but next time….tune it down a bit….i almost got a stroke…to which gauri replied…"and next time u decide to flee…tell me about it…I'll make sure to come with u…." …..DEAL….and with that he enveloped her in a hug and kissed her.
