Bollywood Star Salman Khan Backs Canadian Project 'Dr Cabbie'

1:13 AM PDT 4/12/2013 by Nyay Bhushan

Directed by Jean-Francois Pouliot, the film's cast includes Adrianne Palicki of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and Kunal Nayyar from "Big Bang Theory."

NEW DELHI – Bollywood star Salman Khan's Being Human Productions (SKBH) is co-producing and presenting Dr. Cabbie, helmed by Canadian director Jean-Francois Poulliot (La Grande Seduction), and which began shooting in Toronto on Monday.

Dr. Cabbie revolves around a young Indian immigrant -- an unemployed doctor-turned-cab driver -- who becomes a local hero when he converts his taxi into a mobile clinic. The principal cast includes Vinay Virmani (Breakaway), Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Kunal Nayyar (Big Bang Theory), Lillete Dubey (Monsoon Wedding), Mircea Monroe (Change Up), Rizwan Manji (Outsourced), Chris Diamantopoulos (The Three Stooges) and will also launch newcomer Isabelle.

"Dr. Cabbie is a timeless story that audiences will identify with, blending social issues and the journey of finding one's place in the world. We are thrilled to have such a talented cast who will tell this humorous and heart warming story," said Poulliot.

Producing Partners, FirstTake Entertainment and Caramel Films announced Friday that principal photography for Dr. Cabbie started this week in Toronto with the film slated for a fall release.

"Dr. Cabbie is the story of an Indian immigrant and it has an inherent universal appeal," Khan said in a statement.

Khan's Being Human charity foundation has been active in various projects raising awareness for education and healthcare issues. SKBH Productions was launched in 2011 to produce films whose revenues contribute to Being Human charity projects. The first film produced by the banner was kids drama Chillar Party, which went on to win three National Film Awards (given by the Indian government), including best children's film.

Dr. Cabbie is co-funded by Telefilm Canada, Qubec's Socit de Dveloppement des Entreprises Culturelles (SODEC) and the Harold Greenberg Fund. The film will be distributed in Canada by Entertainment One, while leading Indian distribution and production entity Eros International will handle the Indian sub-continent.
