Tamannaah was born on 21 December 1989 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, to Santhosh and Rajani Bhatia and she has an elder brother, Anand. Her father is a financial consultant. She is of Sindhi descent.[3] She did her schooling in Maneckji Cooper Educational Trust School, Juhu, Mumbai. She is currently pursuing aBA degree at National College, Mumbai through distance education. She later changed her screen name for numerological reasons, varying it slightly to Tamannaah.[6][7] She has been working since the age of 13 since she was spotted at her school's annual day function and offered the lead role which she took up. She also appeared in the music video ofLafzon Mein Keh Na Saku by Abhijeet Sawant, the winner of the first Indian Idol.
Tamannaah started her acting career in 2005, essaying the female lead role in Chand Sa Roshan Chehra, her only Hindi film to date before Himmatwala. The same year, she debuted in Telugu cinema in Sri, playing the leading female role opposite Manoj Kumar. In 2006, she made her debut in the Tamil film industry in Kedi, produced by A. M. Rathnam, along with Ravi Krishna and another newcomer, Ileana D'Cruz. In 2007, she had three releases. After her role in the unsuccessful Vyapari, Tamannaah rose to popularity with the Sekhar Kammula-directed Telugu film Happy Days which received positive reviews and became her first major box office success. Her next release was the Tamil drama film Kalloori, directed by Balaji Sakthivel, that won her accolades and critical acclaim in Tamil as well. In 2008, Tamannaah again had three releases, appearing only in cameo roles in two of them.
In 2009, she received box office success with Padikathavan, with Dhanush. Her next release was a Telugu movie Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam opposite Siddharth. It became a success and she was praised for her refreshing performance.[8][9] Her next film was Ananda Tandavam, which sank without a trace although her performance was praised by critics. Her next Tamil film Ayan alongside Suriyabecame a huge blockbuster and made her a leading star in the Tamil film industry. Her successive release Kandein Kadhalai, which was a remake of the 2007 Hindi blockbuster Jab We Met, was considered a moderate success. She did the role originally played by Kareena Kapoor and was praised by critics for her performance.
Her first 2010 release was Lingusamy's romantic-action flick Paiyaa co-starring Karthi, which went on to become a blockbuster. Tamannaah's chemistry with Karthi in the film was widely praised.[10] Her next release was Sura opposite Vijay. The film opened to negative reviews and became a disaster. Her performance was panned by critics. Her next release was Thillalangadi with Jayam Ravi, which became an above average grosser, but her performance was praised.[11] Her success in Tamil films during 2009 and 2010 established her as the numero uno actress in Kollywood at the time.[3]
Tamannaah appeared in six films in 2011, five of which featured her in a starring role. Her first release was the Tamil action film, Siruthai, which was the remake of the Tollywood blockbuster Vikramarkudu and was her second film alongside Karthi. The film becoming a blockbuster, although her character was received poorly by critics, with a reviewer citing that she offered "little more than arm-candy".[12] Her next release was her first Telugu release after two years, the highly successful romantic comedy 100% Love (2011) with Naga Chaitanya, which fetched positive reviews from both critics and viewers. Tamannaah won the CineMAA Award for Best Actress, besides receiving nominations at various award ceremonies. She was next seen in the Telugu historical masala film Badhrinaadh (2011) opposite Allu Arjun that became an average grosser, which was followed by a Tamil action-masala film again, Hari's Venghai (2011), where she acted alongside Dhanush for the second time in her career. The film was not well received, however critics lauded her performance.[13][14][15] Her final release of 2011 was Oosaravelli, starring Jr. NTR, which was average at the box office, but was praised for her acting.[16] Her first film in 2012 was the Ram Charan Teja starrer Rachaa, which became a huge blockbuster. Rachaa's success established her as one of the leading and in-demand actresses in Tollywood.[5] Her next releaseEndhukante Premanta featuring her opposite Ram, opened to average reviews. Her next release was Rebel alongside Prabhas. Her latest release is the Pawan Kalyan-starrer Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu.[17] It was declared a blockbuster.[18]
She is all set to star in her second Hindi film, Himmatwala opposite Ajay Devgn,which is a remake of the 1983-film with the same title.[19] She recently signed Bhale Thammudu, remake of 2012 Tamil hitVettai, opposite Naga Chaitanya which is scheduled for 2013.[20] She has also signed her third Hindi film opposite Akshay Kumar, lately.
Tamannaah also has experience as a model appearing in various television commercials.[5] She is endorsing popular brands like Celkon Mobiles, Fanta and Chandrika Ayurvedic Soap.[21][22] She is also the brand ambassador of the Salem based jewellery shop AVR and Khazana Jewellery. Before entering the film industry, she also acted in Tamil advertisements like Shakthi Masala, Power Soap and Sun Direct.She also worked with Virat Kohli recently for an ad shoot of celkon mobile.[23]

Padukone was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a former top world level badminton player, and her mother is a travel agent. Her father was then training in Denmark in the sport and when she was eleven months old her family moved to Bangalore, Karnataka, India.[14] Padukone has a younger sister, Anisha, born on 2 February 1991.[15]
Padukone attended Sophia High School in Bangalore, and completed her pre-university studies at Mount Carmel College Bangalore.[16] While in high school she played badminton at the state level.[17]However, she was not keen on pursuing a career as a badminton player.[18] During the time of her film debut she was enrolled with the Indira Gandhi National Open University in Bachelors of Arts(Sociology).[19][20]
While in college, Padukone pursued a career in modelling.[21] She was spotted in a ramp competition in NLS, Bangalore.[citation needed] Over the years, she has modelled for such Indian brands as Liril, DaburLal powder, Close-Up toothpaste and Limca, and has been "brand ambassador" for the Jewels of India retail jewellery show.[22] The cosmetics company Maybelline made her its international spokesperson.[23]
At the fifth annual Kingfisher Fashion Awards she was awarded the title "Model of the Year".[24] Shortly afterward, she was chosen as one of the models for the Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar for 2006 and won two trophies at the Idea Zee Fashion Awards: "Female Model of the Year (Commercial Assignments)" and "Fresh Face of the Year".[25][26] Padukone was also chosen as the brand ambassador of Levi Strauss.[27] In addition, she appeared in the music video for Himesh Reshammiya's song "Naam Hai Tera".
Padukone made her cinematic debut in Kannada with the romantic comedy Aishwarya opposite Kannada superstar Upendra in 2006. The films emerged a commercial success.[28] She later made a successful Bollywood debut in 2007 with Farah Khan's blockbuster Om Shanti Om opposite Shahrukh Khan. The film was a re-incarnation melodrama, featuring her in a double role.[29][30] Her performance was well received, earning the actress a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award as well as her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination. Taran Adarsh from indiaFM noted, "Deepika has all it takes to be a top star â the personality, the looks and yes, she's supremely talented too. Standing in the same frame as SRK and getting it right is no small achievement. She comes as a whiff of fresh air!"[31] About being cast opposite Shah Rukh Khan, she said,
"When Farah was casting for Happy New Year, she saw my commercials on TV and called my agent. I met her when she was rehearsing at a dance hall in Juhu. When that film didn't happen, she offered me OSO. Farah took care of me right from the first meeting, introducing me to Shah Rukh Khan and ensuring that I was comfortable with him. Six months prior to shooting, we frequently met up for lunches and dinners."[32]
Padukone was then seen playing a feisty, modern-day Indian woman, Gayatri, in Siddharth Anand's romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba.[33]The film performed reasonably well at the box office[34], but her performance drew flak. Adarsh wrote, "Deepika is a sore point. Her role isn't convincing and that's the reason why this performance doesn't work. The only consolation is, she looks gorgeous."[35]
Her first release of 2009 was Nikhil Advani's Chandni Chowk To China, in which she played a double role again. Featuring alongside Akshay Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Ranvir Shorey, it was a critical and commercial disaster, with Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India commenting, "Deepika looks lost and forlorn for most of the film."[36][37]
Padukone's fourth release Love Aaj Kal proved to be one of the biggest hits of 2009 and earned critical appreciation.[38] Directed by Imtiaz Ali and featuring Saif Ali Khan opposite Padukone, the film documented the changing value of relationships among the youth. Padukone's portrayal of Meera Pandit, a practical and head-strong career-minded woman, received a mixed reaction from critics, with NDTV'sAnupama Chopra writing, "Deepika looks fabulous but she isn't a strong enough actor to breathe life into the character."[39] Despite this, she received her second Filmfare Award for Best Actress nomination.[40]
The same year, she teamed up with Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan once again for an item number in the Irrfan Khan-Lara Dutta starrer Billu.[41] She also made guest appearances in the Telegu film Love 4 Ever and in Sohail Khan's Main Aur Mrs Khanna.[42][43]
In 2010, Padukone starred in five films, her first being Excel Entertainment's psychological thriller Karthik Calling Karthik. Padukone featured opposite Farhan Akhtaras Shonali Mukherjee, the supportive girlfriend of a troubled schizophrenic. Critics were more appreciative of her performance this time, with Anupama Chopra noting that "Padukone finally seems to be thawing in front of a camera."[44] However, the film underperformed at the box office, and received mixed reviews.[45] She then featured in Sajid Khan's multistarrer comedy Housefull with Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, Lara Dutta, Arjun Rampal, Jiah Khan and Boman Irani. She played the role of Sandy, Kumar's girlfriend and later fiance. Despite a largely negative reception from critics, the film became a major economic success.[46][47] As for her performance, Taran Adarsh mentioned that "Deepika is a surprise. She carries her part with amazing confidence...Housefull is the film that would make people notice her talent as well as beauty".[48]
She then appeared in her second Yash Raj production, Lafangey Parindey which was directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She starred opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh as Pinky Palkar, a blind girl, hellbent on winning a skating competition. Upon release, Padukone's performance gained critical acclaim, with Sudhish Kamath, of The Hindu writing, "This really is Deepika Padukone's film though. She exercises considerable restraint, dances, skates, makes you cry and smile."[49] Despite this, the film received mixed reviews and performed moderately well at the box office.[50]
Her next release was Kunal Kohli's syrupy romance Break Ke Baad opposite Imran Khan, where she played Aaliya Khan, an impetuous brat. The film was not a commercial or critical success, however won Padukone favourable reviews.[50][51] Nikhat Kazmi noted, "Padukone's climactic act seems to be the best performance in her entire career: completely spontaneous, crazy and cute."[52]
Her final release of 2010, Ashutosh Gowarikar's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey opposite Abhishek Bachchan, met with scathing reviews and was declared a disaster.[53] The period drama was a retelling of the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid, with Bachchan playing the revolutionary leader Surya Sen and Padukone playingKalpana Dutta, his lover and confidante.[54] A review carried by The Hollywood Reporter, however, mentioned her portrayal of Dutta as "impressive",[55] with Taran Adarsh adding that "Deepika sheds her glam look and looks every bit the character she illustrates. Kudos to her first of all for accepting a challenging role [of a woman revolutionary of the 1930s] so early in her career and then almost living that character in the film, continuing to prove her mettle far ahead of her poise and exquisiteness."[56]
She began the year 2011 with an item number in Rohan Sippy's Dum Maaro Dum starring Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu. Her song was a remixed version of Zeenat Aman's iconic song from Hare Rama Hare Krishna.[57] The raunchy lyrics and suggestive dancing received mixed reviews. The Deccan Chroniclementioned her moves as "mechanised gyrations", while Adarsh wrote, "Deepika scorches the screen in the title track."[58][59]
Next, she featured in Prakash Jha's reservation melodrama, Aarakshan starring alongside Amitabh Bachchan, as his daughter, and Saif Ali Khan, as his love-interest.[60] The film, though highly publicised, flopped at the box office and received mixed reviews.[61][62] Pratim D. Gupta noted, "Deepika, though, is again the refreshing thing about a movie. Both her scenes with Bachchan â one where she revolts and the other where she redeems herself â show how she has come of age as an actor."[63] Padukone next appeared in Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz alongside Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Chitrangada Singh. The film, which revolved around two friends during the recession, received mixed reviews from critics, and largely due to its 'A' certificate[64], underperformed at the box office.[65]
In 2012, Padukone appeared in Homi Adajania's Cocktail opposite Saif Ali Khan and Diana Penty. The film gyrated Padukone with accolades and praises, and earned her her third Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[66] Anupama Chopra of Hindustan Times wrote, "The big surprise here is Deepika, who moves beyond her usual statuesque mannequin pose and gets into the skin of the emotionally raw and needy poor little rich girl. This is easily her best performance to date."[67] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare said, "Deepika looks ravishing and is one actress who can carry off a bikini. She's the soul of the film and excels in every scene, whether as a material girl who enjoys sex, drugs and rock and roll or as the jealousy ridden girl out to destroy herself."[68] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama noted, "The scene stealer is, without doubt, Deepika, who not only looks sizzling hot, but pitches in her career-best performance. She lets herself loose, surrenders to her character wholly and nails the performance. It's an incredibly noticeable act. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that Cocktail would do for Deepika what Jab We Met did for Kareena."[69] Also, the film was a major commercial success in both the Indian box office,[70][71]and overseas box office.[72]
Padukone was last seen in the multistarrer Race 2 alongside Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel.[73][74] The film received a mostly negative critical reception,[75] unlike its predecessor. Despite this, Race 2 was a commercial success,[76] grossing 
93.50 crore (US$17 million) nett approx at the domestic box office[77] and US$6 million approx overseas,[78] making it her biggest commericial success. Padukone received mixed reviews for her portrayal of femme fatale Elena. Whilst Taran Adarsh compliments that "Deepika has the best scenes in the film. She looks stunning and immerses herself into her character completely",[79] Subhash K Jha notes that "[she] hardly look[s] provocative enough to be convincing as [a] femme fatale."[80]
Following this, Padukone is all set to make her Kollywood debut in Soundarya Rajnikanth's Kochadaiyaan opposite Rajnikanth. She is also set to appear in Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani opposite ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor[81][82]
Padukone is currently filming for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram Leela opposite Ranveer Singh[83][84][85] and Rohit Shetty's action romance film Chennai Express alongside Shahrukh Khan.[86][87][88]
