Interview : 'My future lies in my hands, not in my surname': Uday Chopra |
Excerpts from the interview: Yash Raj is the only production that works with you. Do you think the industry has not given you what you deserve simply because you are Yash Chopra's son? I don't think so and I will not use this excuse to justify for not getting offers from other banners. All that maters in this part of the world is talent. So, I'll get work if I am good but I will have to prove myself if I don't get work. I think my future lies in my hands and not in my surname. 'Dhoom' was a kind of film unknown to all of us. And so, I have a special feeling for it. However, fun was doubled up in 'Dhoom II' because of the presence of a bunch of friends. Of course we use to talk about John and Esha on the sets. We missed them. Has your equation towards your childhood friends Hrithik and Abhishek changed over the years? We are very close friends and the equation is very much the same even today. We always enjoy each other's company and working together for a film like 'Dhoom II' was amazing. We either work or have fun during the making of the film and there were no place for other emotions.
It was mind-blowing. It was amazing working with both of them. I didn't have much scene with Ash. I share more time with Bipasha onscreen, as we are pair in the film. But whether we end up loving each other or not is a different matter all together. Were you scared that you would be lost in the crowd of Abishek, Bipasha, Hrithik and Aishwarya? It's ok even if I get lost in this crowd because it is a very good crowd. This is a film about five people. So, if the characters are strong, everyone will stand out in their own way. Has your character Ali changed in the sequel? Ali is constant, and so, he is still the same innocent, funny, smart and lucky person. He is comfortable wherever he is. There is not much change, as he is a stable person. However, he has become a cop in the sequel as shown at the end of the first part. He is proud of the profession but he is still the same as a person. Was it tough to repeat the mannerism and character of the original to the sequel, as it was your first sequel? I purposely decided not to change my mannerism, as it worked out so well in the original but we have tried to change my looks this time around. For instance, he sports a short hair as a cop, unlike the long hair in the original. He looks leaner this time but the bandana is retained. In short, he has not changed except the looks. I did most of the stunts like I did in the first part.
The music of 'Dhoom II' is much more punchier and massy than the earlier one. Every song in the album is good in its own way. It's difficult to make a comparison, as I like the first one too. But this album is double the last one as far as energy level is concerned. This album rocks. Share us the best moment you had during the shooting of the film. The best moment happened in Rio during the shooting of the climax scene. We were on the streets of Rio with lots of dancers and artistes from there. We all were tired by 2 am and were sitting around waiting for the next shot to begin. At this juncture, I put my ipod to the speakers and played the song "Kajra re" from 'Bunty aur Babli'. You know, I couldn't believe my eyes, as everybody stood up and danced. Abhishek and Ash were performing on the stage and the entire Rio crowd was blown away by the song and dance. People of Rio are very fond of music and dance. Was shooting for the sequel tougher than the original? Yes it was, as many more things happened in the sequel. It was shot in many locations, has much more action and characters. After all, it's part II of 'Dhoom', and multiplying fun by 2 means double the hard work too. You know, everybody worked hard. Do you think 'Dhoom II' will do better than 'Dhoom'?
Do you think 'Dhoom III' will happen? It's a good question but I am not the right person to say. Ask Aditya Chopra about it. It is a distant possibility at the moment. I prefer staying idle instead of doing something that I don't enjoy. I may be not very choosy but that doesn't mean that I will choose something that doesn't excite me. Lots of offers have come my way but they all are not the kind of film I want to do. |

Interview : 'Abhishek is a mad boy': Bipasha Basu |
Excerpts from the Interview: What role do you play in 'Dhoom 2'? It's great to be a part of the film in the first place and its timing was fantastic as I was fit. Maybe producer Aditya Chopra chose me for the film because of the physical look my character needs. I play the role of a cop by name Shonali, and it was not tough because I was very fit and I have the height too. She hangs around with guys and has the toughness of a cop. I have become tough too. I did stunts like any cop would. Do you enjoy doing this kind of adventurous films as against typical Hindi films that have dance and songs? This is the stage when I want to experiment everything, I guess. You know, I forced myself to be comfortable with dance and song routine in the early stage of my career, as I was not sure of myself. Now, I know the importance of naach and gaana in Bollywood. But Indian film industry is changing with changing times. Different kinds of film have come up, and 'Dhoom 2' is one such film. Yes, it's more fun doing this kind of adventurous films, as I am a very adventurous and athletic person in real life too. It's not like doing a job but doing naach gaana is a job to me.
I played a Bengali in 'Corporate' also but 'Dhoom 2' is the first film that has given me chance to speak my mother tongue. This is the first time I am speaking Bengali on camera, as I've not done any regional film so far. Dubbing the Bengali lines was fun, and it also sounds odd, as it the language I speak at home. The surname of my character in the film is Bose. Coincidentally, my grandfather was called K N Bose but my father and uncle went for Basu. Of course, Bose and Basu are the same. For these reasons, I think my role in the film is closer home. Do you feel that you are sidelined, as so much attention has been given to Aishwarya for her looks? Not at all. Extra attention is natural because Ash has not experimented with her looks like the way she did in this film. She has the image of a typical Indian women, wearing Indian cloths et al. For the first time, she has changed her looks and appears in short skirts and bikini tops. She is fantastic. She has changed for the better. Hey, she looks hot, really hot. Did you find any difference in Abhishek this time from the last time you worked with him? He is becoming madder and madder every passing day. You know, he is a mad boy. It was a memorable experience working in 'Dhoom 2' because of my friendship with Abhishek and Uday Chopra. I also got to know more about Ash and Hrithik. So how do you find Hrithik and Ash?
How is the music of 'Dhoom 2' as compared to 'Dhoom'? And how was it like singing out the words My Name is Ali? Sure, the album of 'Dhoom' was great but I think the soundtracks of 'Dhoom 2' are also fantastic. I am always of the opinion that audience has to identify with the picturisation. The original song has been adapted in a beautiful but completely different manner. "Touch Me" is my favorite song. It's sexy cute. I love it. I think people have to be sexy and cute. It would be boring if either sexy or cute misses. Well, I didn't sing but just said the words for the song My Name is Ali. That's it. Share us the sweet moment you had while shooting for the film. I had a wonderful time in Rio. It's a lovely place. I fit into the place easily not because of the way I look but because of my role in 'Dhoom 2'. In the film, I had long hair and my nature is easy going very much like the people of the place. I look like a local, and so, I made friends with them. Everybody had bodyguards but I used to go without one. I want to have my own space. I used to go for walk on the beach, go around and have my own time. One thing I want to tell about the place is, the people there work out everyday and the age ranges from ten to 80. There were 20 wrinkle-skinned old women in my gym and they look fit. They used to have dance classes in my hotel. You know, I had great time with them. People there are not body conscious. Not all are fit but they wear tiny bits of clothing, and still nobody look at them.
It's a beautiful place and I have been there many a time because of my film assignments. People there are nice. However, the time I had this time around is unforgettable because I did my bikini shots in Durban. I just can't forget that. You know, shooting in bikini is not that easy. It's not the consciousness but the fitness that makes it tough. I ate oranges for three days and worked out thrice a day to look fit and athletic in the film. I don't know how I will look but I wanted to look like Cameron Diaz and not like Pamela Anderson. Girls usually roll on the beach when bikini shots are done but I would like to thank director Sanjay Gadhvi and the entire team of the film who have shot me in bikini, because I think I was athletic and youthful. I was comfortable with it. I assure you it's not vulgar. |

Interview : Watch Hrihik go ballistic in Dhoom 2! |
Excerpts from the Interview: The goody boy turns bad with 'Dhoom 2'. What is your take on the negative role? It's the intrinsic script of the film that hooked me in. This was something that I had been craving for at that moment as I was bored and fed up playing the goody roles over and over again. I enjoyed doing them but I wanted to do something different. Mr A – Aryan was an opportunity for me. I wouldn't say that the character is overall negative, it's just that he is on the other side of the law. Just because my character in the sequel takes John's role in Dhoom, he is not quite of a villain here. I was doing all these serious cinema films and wanted to do something just out of the world and completely let myself out there and have fun. I think its one of the most enjoyable films that I have done. Tell us something about your character in the film. Aryan has this secret mission of acquiring all high desirable objects like diamonds and jewellery that implants feelings of greed, create politics and feed the ego. He feels these things can create greed and need and comes in the way of true caring and being true to the people around you and so you always want more of these objects for yourself. No one knows what he does with all the things he robs in the film. He does it because he can and because he thinks these objects of desire are something that are the cause of most of our egoistic battles and his mission is to rid the world. His modus operandi is very unique because he does it with such a flair that really makes him out to be someone you want to be. I really enjoyed myself projecting Aryan's persona.
For me every film is a challenge. I want to do 10 times better to make a mark. This film is better than the prequel but its not enough, we've to reach the peak and that's what I'm striving for. Regarding the stunts I would say that I've tried my hands in everything possible in an action film like sand boarding, snow boarding, sky diving, train walking, jumping off a cliff, bikes, cars, et el. While preparing for the film I could never imagine that I would do so much. What I had done in Krrish was very small in comparison to this. Roller blading is a difficult sport and I underwent training for 3 months. I went to Dubai to train myself in indoor snow mountain. I walked on the train doing stunts and did sand boarding behind the train. I was actually hooked on to a rope that I was holding onto with my bare palm, with a train at a speed of 60 kms per hour and I was on a sand boarding just skimming behind it on this sand. There was life risk involved doing the action. I've been through near death experiences but I'm happy I'm alive. Every time you come back home you should feel fulfilled and that is something that I got out of Dhoom You also con people with many disguises. How did it go through? With expert makeup hands from London there is hardly anything left for you to do. I had so much fun seeing myself transformed into a complete different man every time. How was it working with Aishwarya and Bipasha for the first time? Aishwarya is more than her looks and beauty and is very talented. I like working with actresses like her who thinks about the film as a whole and is not engrossed only with herself. Working with her has been inspiring, engrossing, exciting. I also liked working with Bipasha because she has no tantrums and is so casual. I've no scenes with her but we all bonded so well together during the trip in Rio. Abhishek, Aishwarya, Bipasha, Uday and I had so much fun together there.
Abhishek and I had been friends throughout our life and always wish the best for each other. I look forward to do more films with him. He is a good person, without any ego and it has been a fulfilling experience working with him. There is always this give and take and he is just the best in every shot. My friendship with Uday also goes a long time back and we have been friends since second standard and have done everything together under the sky from karate, computer classes, college, school, tuition, sports everything, and the only thing remaining was doing a film together. So I had a great time working with him. He has tremendous potential and I wish him the best. |

Audio Review : Dhoom 2 - Distinctly flavored but sounds average |
Producer: Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra
Kick start the album with 'Crazy Kiya Re', which sets the record straight when it comes to dhoom and masti. Sunidhi Chauhan is at her best to make the track catchy and appealing and her lively rendition is just infectious. She is aptly supported by an English chorus. Pritam gets full mark for creating the right tempo and rhythm to make it a swinging dance number. Sameer's lyrics are fun filled and in sync with the music, but sans creativity. You might get tempted to hear the track again, but there's no need for it as the remix of the song comes soon. 'Remix version' is brought to you by Bunty Rajput, who makes some add on with rap, fast pace and new sounds. It's the speeding effect with pure energy brought in the track that knocks you down. Time to bang and vroom with dhoom! Unveil the magic of Dhoom in the next track. The title track is undoubtedly the most awaited one going by the furor that the original track created. Pritam's attempt to maintain the original essence and yet garnish it with something new is whelming. This time he ropes in a male singer and it is none other than composer Vishal Dadlani. Vishal goes for a right take with Dominique Cerejo adding with the female voice. 'Dhoom Again' has the same base tune as the original. It is a complete English version written by Asif Ali Beg. With an extended percussion the track fall heavy on the ears but catchy theme piece makes up for it.
If there was 'Dilbara' in the first, there is 'My Name is Ali' here. Sonu Nigam holds the mike and does a good rendition with Bipasha Basu following him. She just adds a few words to the track and is not exactly singing. It is a good track but might take sometime to grow on you. Sonu's vocals and the cool feeling of the song will surely leave an impact. Instrumentation for the next track 'Touch Me' stands out but the same cannot be said in regard of the rendition by Alisha Chinoy and KK. Though they are at their regular best the problem is that their voice doesn't blend very well for this catchy and seductive track. The tracks are distinctly flavored and this is where Pritam scores for Dhoom 2. But in comparison to the original soundtrack and songs like 'Shikdum', 'Salaame' and 'Dhoom Machcha Le' it wouldn't be unfair to say that his compositions are pretty mediocre here. |
