Meet Tom and Jerry of television

Yash & Gauri Tonk

Currently riding a huge popularity wave is the Tonk couple - Gauri and Yash. Their sizzling on-screen chemistry in Nach Baliye 2 has made many hearts go green. And what's heartening is the fact that the couple is warm and lovable off-screen as they appear on-screen.

Their love story...
Yash: I met Gauri on the sets of Kahin Kissi Roz. It was love at first sight for me. We became friends and got to know each other and then after 8 months I proposed to her and we got engaged. I am not a very loud person. I can not express my emotions before everyone. I simply told her that I love her and that I want to marry her. I think she was bowled over by the simplicity and she could feel that I was genuinely in love with her. Those days my reputation was not very good and it was very natural for her to feel awkward. Everyone used to say that I am a Casanova type which actually I was not. I was never involved in any serious relationship before this and when I could make up my mind I proposed to Gauri. She accepted my proposal at once may be because she felt that it was a golden opportunity!(laughs)
Gauri: A few months after we became friends he fell sick and did not come to shoot for 3 days. So I went up to his house with a bouquet of flowers and that day itself he proposed to me. At first I thought that he was joking but then when I understood what he was saying I thought over it - after all I knew him well and he was not a very bad match for me!

What's so special?
Yash: Gauri has everything that I wanted from my wife. She is loving, caring and a very good mother. She is my soul mate. I can share everything with her. I respect her for the person she is. From her I learnt how difficult it is to bear a child for long 9 months and I want to salute my wife and all mothers round the world for undertaking so much pain with a smiling face.
Gauri: I love everything about him. I love him for the way he pampers me, the way he loves me and the way he fights with me.

Something to work on?
Yash: I wish Gauri could control her anger a bit. She gets angry very fast.
Gauri: His anger! He is always in extremes... either he is in a very good mood or a very bad mood. There is nothing in between. I wish I could control his temper!

Fight club!

Yash & Gauri: We fight on every small things from what clothes to wear to what to eat. We do not need any issues, but touch wood no such big issues have come between us. When we fight we fight like Tom and Jerry... as if we can't live without a fight and can't live without each other too!

Your chemistry with Gauri is very evident in Nach Baliye... what's the secret to it?
Yash: Acceptability. Too much of happiness never lasts, too much of sadness does not last, too much of passion does not last, too much of excitement does not last... so we have to accept these in lives. Too much of expectation spoils the relationship. What we need is a healthy balance. No one is perfect and we have to love a person with all his strengths and weaknesses. Both of us agree to this philosophy of life. We let everything come and go... and accept it as a part of life. I think this makes us tick!
Gauri: I feel when you marry a person you see both sides of him and learn to accept him in all ways. I think in marriage two incomplete people make a complete relationship. It's like two sides of the same coin. We complement each other and whenever one person falls behind, the other one is there to help. Moreover I think the love, the confidence and the understanding we have in each other generates this on screen chemistry.

Would you both work together in all your projects?
Yash: First we did Kahin Kissi Roz and then Nach Baliye 2 together and enjoyed working together. But I don't think we would do that in all the projects because life becomes a bit boring then. I think the thrill of getting back from work and sharing each other's day has a different thrill. Moreover catching up with each other over the phone in the middle of a shoot is much more exciting and romantic.

Do you remember your first date?
Yash: Gauri was from a conventional family where it was too much to even go for shoots, forget a date! We never had a special date as such. After we came to know each other well we used to hang around at parties or discos followed with a quiet dinner.
Gauri: I am a very reserved person and do not speak to people unless I come to know them very well. But in case of Yash I remember he started talking to me from Day 1 on just about everything... from Kahin Kissi Roz to my mom and dad! We became good friends from then and used to have long chats on the sets and between shots. That was the first date.

Most cherished day of my life?
Yash: Well you can say that the most cherished and also the most shocking day of my life was on the day I got married.(laughs)
Gauri: When my daughter was born.

Most romantic moment of life?
Yash: I do not categorise my life so strictly. I cannot say which is the most romantic moment because I believe romance has to be there 24X7 in my life. Without it there will be no charm in life.
Gauri: Yash is not the mushy romantic type of guy who will get flowers, candles and chocolates. He expresses his romance in his own sweet way... like winking at me or pinching me or whispering some stupid things in my ears before the whole family!!! Gosh and I love the way he spoils and pampers me and our daughter.

Most emotional moment of life?
Yash: When I saw my daughter for the first time. I was the first person to see her and hold her after Gauri.
Gauri: When my daughter was born I was very touched by the way Yash behaved. He was so concerned for me and the baby that he stayed in the OT when I was having the baby. Very few men have that courage to see their wives go through that pain and suffering.

How has marriage transformed you?
Yash: Marriage has changed me to a better human being. I feel more responsible now and often laugh at my silly sides before marriage. Earlier I was very carefree but now I care more about other people's feelings.
Gauri: I was always a very homely person. I love my family above everything in life. Marriage has helped me to realise my dreams.

How do you manage both home and career?
Yash: Thanks to Gauri, I do not have to interfere much in to the home department. I have left it to her and she manages really well. She is the boss at home and takes care of everything. I do not poke my nose into it unless it is very important and needs my intervention.
