Chapter Eight – The Interruption
Before I could get off the bed, RK had yelled for the person to enter his room. The door opened and my eyes widened as Adi stood in the doorway. He was looking through a bag as he began to speak.
"Hey bro, have you seen Ma…"
He trailed off as he looked up and saw me on RK's bed beside RK.
"Oh…I'm sorry…I can come back lat…"
"Nah, she was just leaving to get me some chai."
I instantly turned my head towards RK in response to his comment. He shot me his smirk as I let my eyes turn into slits as I glared at him. I refused to take his order. I got off the bed, patted down my clothes and my hair, and then walked towards Adi who stood in the doorway. He wore an expression which showed he seemed worried yet angry at the same time. Before leaving the room, I made sure to leave a last comment for RK, without turning to look at him. I felt his eyes on me from behind as I spoke.
"I forgot to mention, you won't be getting any chai from me."
I wanted to turn to see the expression on his face but felt it more appropriate to just walk out of the room without even a glance in his direction. As soon as I was in the hallway, I let out a deep breath as I put my tough act on break. Adi walked out, closed the door behind himself and stared at me oddly. Then as if ignoring everything he had just seen, he held out the bag in front of himself.
"An office friend, Supriya…she helped me pick these out for you quickly this morning. It's not much. Indian clothes, western clothes, and oh, there's jewelry, make-up, and a dress in there as well."
"A dress? Why would I nee…"
"Because tomorrow is bro's birthday. We're throwing a party for him and it'd be nice of you to join us in the dress I've provided."
"Oh…I'll see. Can I ask you something?"
"Mhm?"
"Who is RK? I mean, what's he do? I know you go to office and…wait, where do you work?"
He pulled my arm gently and dragged me back to my room.
"Sorry, I didn't want him to hear."
"Does he scare you?"
"What? Hah! No, he's my bro. I'm more scared for you. Anyways, bro runs a modeling business from home. And by 'from home', I literally mean from home. I'm the one who goes to the office for him and listen to his commands."
"Why do you let him push you around like that?"
"Push me around? I like working at the modeling agency. In fact, I'm the one who asked bro to let me. He went and made me co-owner of the business. He runs half of it from home and I run half in the office. Have you ever heard of Kundra's Modeling Agency?"
"Uhm, nope, never…I didn't really have a social life outside of the orphanage."
"Ah. Anyways, don't let bro know I told you th…"
"Told her what?"
Our heads spun towards the door to see RK leaning against it. He spoke as though he had heard everything.
"Told her about our modeling agency Aditya?"
"Yeah bro. She was being adamant."
"Our modeling agency is no secret."
"You're not ang…"
"Angry? Why? Should I be?"
The entire time he spoke to Adi, he had his eyes on me. I couldn't help but look away a few times…even though I tried hard to keep my head high and my eyes on him. He walked into my room and towards us. I was surprised he didn't pull my arm or even lay a finger on me this time as he spoke.
" Madhubala. I've just come to warn you that if you don't bring me chai within the next fifteen minutes…there will be consequences. Which I'm sure you will not enjoy one bit."
He left without turning back. I realized that he always caused an uncomfortable feeling when he was around, but the minute he'd be out of sight…a sense of relief would overwhelm me.
"You should probably make him his chai."
"Didn't you say that I should fight back?"
"Yeah. It's good to once in a while…but not all the time. I've been meaning to ask you…did he do anything to y…"
"No. He was only trying to scare me earlier. I stood my ground though…refused to show him the fear inside of me."
"Ata girl. I'm going to head back to office. Just came to drop off the clothes."
"Thank you Adi."
"Don't mention it."
He turned and was walking away when I noticed his steps come to a stop by the door. He turned to look at me and I couldn't help but let confusion cross my face. I noticed his eyes move towards my chest and then with two steps, he was in front of me again.
"Forgot something."
"Huh?"
Before I could question him further, I suddenly gasped as his warm, soft fingers brushed against my chest. I looked down and noticed his fingers doing up the button which RK had undone. My heart raced and I couldn't help but let a slight smile cross my face. Adi was indeed the complete polar opposite of his older brother. And that was a good thing.
"Try not to let it get undone again."
With that last comment, he rushed out of my room as my eyes remained on the door. It was then that I also realized that my heart hadn't raced as fast as it did when RK came close. Why didn't Adi have the effect on me which I wanted…and why did RK have the effect on me which I didn't want? Was it because I'm a fan of mysterious, dark, passionate guys? Or was it because I liked the unpredictability…the not knowing what'll happen next feeling? I was lost and couldn't understand, but I let it not bother me. Besides, I was now just a mere maid in their home…there was no way I'd have ever a chance with either of the brothers.
