Chapter Eleven - I Know Who You Are
I stared at her standing by the door for a moment. Since I hadn't gotten much sleep the previous night, I yawned.
"Can we talk later? I couldn't sleep all night."
"I know why you couldn't sleep. And no, this can't wait until later."
I felt my eyes slightly widen at her response, she knew? She entered my room and closed the door behind herself as I sat up straight in bed and leaned my back against the headboard. She sat across from me on the bed and stared at me intently.
"Can you make it quick Trishna?"
"Your name's RK right?"
"No, it's Bob. Of course it's RK."
"I'm being serious."
"So am I Trishna. Just get to the point. Today's my last day to rest."
"Your name is Raj Kumar?"
I didn't remember ever mentioning my fake full name to her, but I figured Madhu had. I couldn't even remember if that was the name I had used. I hesitated for a second but then quickly nodded my head up and down.
"Seriously?"
"Why would I lie about my name?"
"I know who you are."
"You're making it seem like I'm some criminal or something!"
"You're Rishabh…Rishabh Kundra."
As she mentioned my name, I froze. I wondered how she knew…I hadn't told anyone. My mouth opened slightly but no words came out. I felt her eyeing my movements and I, so I quickly looked away.
"I don't know what you're talking about Trishna. I'm Raj."
"Oh quit lying to me. I saw you last night, eyeing those pictures and tearing up. I'm not stupid."
"Do you ever sleep?! It was late and you were busy spying on me?"
"Not spying, checking. I needed to make sure Madhu and you weren't doing something you'd regret."
I stared at her with a straight face of disbelief. She was treating us as though we were kids.
"Just a reminder, we're not eight anymore."
"Oh I know, but Madhu can be when she's drunk. Anyways, that's not why I came here. Don't take me off topic. Wait, eight anymore? That means you ARE RK! Now tell me why you haven't told her before I go tell her myse…"
"NO! Please, don't. Wait, why didn't you mention anything about this earlier?"
"We were standing outside her room."
"Oh…but please don't tell her."
That was it, I had confirmed her doubts. She shot me a victory smile but then a confused expression crossed her face.
"Why not?"
"Because I made her a promise when we were younger."
"Promise?"
"Do I have to tell you it?"
"Of course you do! Now that I know your secret, I'll be able to get anything out of you."
She smirked at me as she spoke and I felt irritated for it having been her who found out the truth.
"I told her the next time we meet would be after I casted her to play opposite me in one of my films."
I stared at Trishna as she stared back silently. I waited for a response when suddenly she burst into laughter. I furrowed my eyebrows and stared at her with a face full of irritation. She took a moment to control her laughter.
"You? In movies?!"
"Why? What's wrong with me?"
"No, nothing's wrong with you! In fact you look good enough to be the next big star. I just find it funny how Madhu's one of the country's best actress and you want to cast her in your film which is far from happening."
"I lost my parents. I brought myself up and so I couldn't even enter the film industry until recently. But I don't care how long it takes, I won't tell her who I am until I make it just as big as her."
"Wait. Your parents didn't leave you anything?"
"They had nothing left. I don't know how, but my parents lost everything they had."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."
"Yeah. Anyways, you better not tell Mi…Madhu anything.."
"I don't plan on telling your MIDHI anything. Kind of find it cute how you're willing to wait forever to fulfill your promise."
"I'll do anything it takes."
She put on a look, which showed she was impressed, and then she got off my bed. I smiled because she was leaving and once she was out of my room completely, I quickly laid down to get some rest.
By the time I awoke, it was 7pm. I got up, went to the bathroom, splashed my face with water, and then headed down the stairs for dinner. I was surprised to see Madhu sitting at the table and eating her food. She looked up at me for a split second and then continued eating. I went to take a seat across from her at the table.
"Why are you home so soon?"
"Because our stuntman was missing."
"Huh?"
"Mr. Chopra said since we can't complete the stunt scenes he had planned for the day, that we might as well all go home early."
"Oh."
"You have to go back to work tomorrow. How's your wrist? Not that I care or anything."
"In that case, it doesn't matter."
"Oh shut up and tell me how your wrist is."
"I honestly keep forgetting I broke it. You just happen to remind me."
"Good. Then you can come back to work. I'll call Mr. Chopra and let him know."
"What? I thought you said that he said that I HAVE to go back to work tomorrow?"
"Nah. I just said that because I don't think it's fair for me to have to go to work while you sit at home doing nothing."
"Real nice."
"I know."
She smiled sarcastically and then continued to eat. I joined in on eating and the rest of the evening went by calmly. She went to her room and I went to mine. We didn't talk for the rest of the night and no one bothered me or even entered my room. It was nice finally getting a calm moment to myself. It was 12am when I eventually managed to fall asleep again.
The following morning went by calmly as well. I awoke and saw that Madhu was already awake, so I quickly got changed, ate, and waited for her by the door. For the first time, I was ready before she was. It was minutes later when she came running towards the door. We rushed towards the car and it was in the drive to the studio that we spoke after hours.
"How were you ready before me today?"
"I don't know. Can I ask you something?"
"Alright, seriously? Is this car like the question car or something? Whenever we're going to the studio, you just start asking me all these questions and it's annoying."
I knew she hated questions, but as usual, I ignored her and continued with my question anyways.
"Do you remember the night you were drunk?"
"You mean two nights ago?"
"Yeah."
"I remember our little conversation on the studio bench. That's about it."
"That it?"
"Yeah, why? Should I remember something else? DID YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME?"
She laughed and I couldn't help but feel angered by the fact that she would find such a thing funny.
"That's not funny. If it hadn't been me…"
"Wait what? What'd you do?"
"Took you to your room."
"Alright, thanks. But I'd like to inform you that it's not the first time I've been drunk and I can take care of myself."
"What's up with you and not accepting my help?"
"Dude, you're a homeless guy. I'd rather take help from Priya."
"Well technically you do, she's your maid."
"Oh shut up. Not another word after this."
And with that, the rest of the drive went by in silence.
