Chapter Four - The Advice
I laid in bed with the covers on top of me for what felt like an hour when suddenly I heard my stomach growl quietly. I placed my hand over my stomach and closed my eyes, trying to think about anything but food. As I attempted to zone out all my thoughts of food, I heard someone walk into the room.
"Dinner time!"
It was Aditya's voice and I groaned as I remembered how much he liked to talk. After a groan escaped my mouth, he chuckled. I decided to open my eyes and sit up. I felt it was thoughtful of him to bring the food for me, but then I remembered they had a maid.
"Why didn't you send Neha?"
"She's busy sending bro food. And besides, I wanted to show you the clothes I picked out for you!"
"What time is it?"
"12am, why?"
I stared at him and wondered why he was up so late, but then decided not to ask. I shook my head no but then wondered how he had managed to find me clothes.
"I picked this out from Ma's closet, I'll definitely go out to buy you new clothes tomorrow. Don't worry, it's from when she was around your age, so it should fit."
I felt as though he had read my mind, so I stupidly tried to empty my mind of all thoughts. I found myself wondering where their parents were when he suddenly came to my bedside. Then without even asking me, he sat down next to me and leaned against the headboard. He put his feet up in my bed and I felt his leg brush against mine, causing me to slide away from him slightly. He placed the clothes, which were in a bag, on the ground and the tray of food in his lap. I stared up at his face and saw the same gentle smile from earlier. He seemed so happy-go-lucky that I wondered if I could trust him or not.
"So, should I feed you or do you want to feed yourself?"
"I'm not hungry."
My stomach growled slightly in protest and I heard his croaky chuckle again. I crossed my arms and turned my head the other way. I noticed a spoon of food in my peripheral vision but ignored it even though it smelled so amazing. It took everything I had not to let that spoon enter my mouth.
"Come on, eat! You know, you don't need to consider yourself kidnapped. It's not like we took you from anyone close to you. You have no family!"
"The orphans were my family."
I looked at him with an upset look and he placed the spoon back in the bowl.
"Bro called the orphanage to tell them you quit your job there because you found family."
I felt an uneasy feeling in my stomach as I realized that no one would come to find me. But a pleasant feeling also took place within me because that meant, no one would unnecessarily worry for me. Orphanages had enough worry of their own, so the last thing I wanted to do was add more stress onto their minds. I watched as he lifted the spoon again after probably reading my mixed facial expression, but I turned my head the other way again. That was until I heard familiar heavy footsteps entering the room. My head shot in the direction of the door and there he stood, looking just as dashing yet evil as ever. Aditya quickly got off the bed as though he was frightened.
"Adi, get out."
"Bro, I was just..."
"I said get out."
I turned to look at Aditya who gave me an odd look, almost as though he was apologizing for something that hadn't happened yet. My heart began to race with fear as Aditya walked out of the room and closed the door behind himself. In an odd way, I wished he hadn't left. Then my eyes met RK's. The same cold eyes from earlier stared down at me as he approached me slowly. He sat down on the edge of the bed next to me and picked up the tray of food. I watched him for a moment as he played with the spoon. Then he spoke without looking in my direction.
"Things would be much easier if you'd just be a good girl for us. I said all you have to do is listen to us and life will be easy for you. But no. It's because of your idiocy, that I have to do things like this."
His words frightened me and I saw him take the spoon out of the bowl. He picked up the bowl with his fingers and placed the tray on the bedside table. He began to come near me but I inched away from him. I didn't even realize that I was moving away from him until he had to get onto the bed to reach me. I stopped moving as I felt the edge of the bed behind me. Then I made a stupid split second decision. I quickly jumped off the bed, which caught him off guard, and I ran out of the room. The minute I was out of the room, I gasped at the beautiful scene in front of me. A big white home, a shining chandelier, a two-way staircase, and a hallway which seemed to never end came into view. The view managed to distract me until I heard him curse in the room I had just run out of. I looked at the end of the hall and began running in that direction when Aditya walked out of a room. He looked at me with wide eyes as I ran to hide behind him. He was about to turn around to face me when he froze. I gripped at his shoulders with both hands and peaked over his shoulder to see RK standing at the end of the hall with the same bowl. I felt his body go cold under my fingers, so I decided to whisper into his ear.
"I'm scared..."
His body tensed up under my fingers and I watched as RK began walking in our direction. Aditya reached his hand up and placed it onto mine, which laid on his shoulder. It felt comforting in a way. But then he grabbed my hand and pulled me in front of himself. He held me in front of himself so I was face to face with RK. My pulse sped up with every step he took towards me. Then when he was just steps away, he stopped and I noticed his eyes move to stare at Aditya.
"Give her to me."
"Bro...don't you think we've done enough to her for one day? You should let her eat when she wants..."
"Don't tell me what to do."
"But..."
"I said give her to me."
"No."
"What did you say?!"
"I can't! Look at her."
RK's eyes shot down to look at me and I noticed a frightening kind of fire within his eyes. He stepped closer towards me and I tried to step back but Aditya stopped me. He held me tight in place as RK's face came to a stop just inches away from mine.
"Madhubala. You listen to me. Just because you've got my bro to defend you, doesn't mean you'll get away with everything."
And with that, he poured the warm Indian lentil soup down my chest. I gasped as the warm soup ran down my chest and stained my favourite summer dress. I looked up at RK and noticed his eyes on my chest and quickly in a reflexive way, I crossed my arms over my chest. He looked into my eyes and I heard Aditya quietly chuckling behind me. RK smirked, dropped the bowl, and walked off as though nothing had happened. Once RK had entered his room I assumed, I quickly turned around to look at smiling Aditya. His eyes shot down to my chest as well and I placed my arms back up to cover my chest.
"Why'd you do that to me?!"
"Do what? I was just making you stronger by placing you in front."
"Stronger?! Look what happened!"
I looked down at myself and then back up at Aditya.
"Listen, I know RK. After all, he is my bro. Never try to hide from him; the only way you'll ever win against him is if you face him, face to face. Don't run like a chicken. Stand up for yourself. I'm not always going to be here to help you. I have a job."
The thought of not having him around managed to frighten me. I stepped away from him as I felt the warm soup dripping from my body. I quickly turned and ran back to the room I had been in. I heard him call my name behind me but I closed my door and picked up the bag of clothes on the ground. I ran into the bathroom and that's when I saw my face, from a close view, for the first time all day. I looked exhausted. Dark circles had formed under my eyes and a big white bandage covered my nose. My hair was a mess and my dress was just as messy. I dropped the bag of clothes and stared at myself in the mirror. I splashed my face with water and then stared at myself again. That's when I cracked. I broke down and let all the built up tears out. I didn't know what I had done to deserve being kidnapped. I fell to the ground and cried more. It felt like only minutes had passed when my tears dried up. I sat on the ground for a moment but then stood back up and stared at myself in the mirror again. This time I smiled. A vengeful smile. I thought back to Aditya's words, stand up for yourself, face him face to face. And that was it. I told myself that I had to be stronger, for myself. I told myself that I wouldn't let RK win with whatever he had planned.
And that's how our dark, passionate love story began...
