Chapter 3
"Why cant I understand you, geet?", he thought as he heard the door close.
"Why cant I understand him- once he's nice, once he's angry- once he lets me close- once he distances himself from me- what does he want", she thought as she walked to the kitchen to make some tea for Maan.
Geet made some tea for Maan and was about to walk back, when she saw him walk down the stairs with Dev.
"Oh c'mon Bro", he said, laughing out loud and walking down the stairs.
"Dev, I think Naintara and you should go. I'm not really interested", said Maan.
"Bro, think about it and let me know. I'll have to tell Naintara, else she'll kill me for not giving her advance notices", he said. Maan looked confused.
Dev clarified, "Arey she has to get her clothes and accessories ready. If by chance, she's worn all the one crore outfits she has then she has to go shopping. Now, all that needs time and hence the advance notices".
Geet shook her head and smirked. "Chai", she said and gave Maan the cup.
"Oh wow bhabhiji, aapne banaya, specially Maan Veerji ke liye?", asked Dev, smirking and winking.
"Ji haan, devar ji", she said.
"Wah! Kya pyaar hain. Arey Naintara kahan ho tum? ", he called out to her.
"Kitchen mein", answered Geet.
"Oh I See. Thank you Bhabhi", he said and smiled again. He walked towards the kitchen and Naintara asked him, "Dev were you calling me?"
Mere liye kabhi tumne itni pyaar se chai banayi?", he asked Naintara.
Naintara sighed and said, "Nahin Dev. Aur banaugi bhi nahin. Hatiye aap, bahut kaam hain", she said and walked back into the kitchen.
"Naintara aaj kal pyaar nahin karte ho tum mujhse", he said, walking right behind her, into the kitchen.
"Lo shuru dono", said Geet.
"Hmmm", said Maan and walked to the dining table. He sat and had his tea while Geet went into the kitchen to check if Naintara needed any help.
While having his tea, Maan thought of Geet's ex-boss.
It was sometime in April- almost three years back- after Geet had joined the Khuranas as an intern. For everyone who wanted to become an architect- his or her dream company to work with was Khurana Constructions (KC). And KC, encouraged the concept of internships and also provided scholarships to a selected few talented and hard-working students. Geet, was selected to intern with KC after going through a series of interviews and tests. She was one among the five to win the chance of interning with KC-after competing against a few thousands of students all over India . While the others interned in offices in Hyderabad and Mumbai, Geet had been given an offer to intern in the Delhi office for a period of 8 months.
Geet had only heard of the Khuranas and saw their pictures in magazines and publications- but never met them or saw them personally. Maan and Dev had offices on the sixth floor and the eighth floor of the South wing of the Khurana Towers-, which was a ten-storied building with four wings- North, South, East, and West. Geet's cubicle was on the fifth floor of the South wing- where Sasha and Adi had their offices too. Sasha, tried staying on the sixth floor as much as possible- closer to Maan's office but she never was given an entry into his cabin without an appointment. Thanks to his intelligent and good-looking secretary- Shreyasi.
Shreyasi knew very well how Sasha was in the presence of Maan and in his absence. So, she never cared to give Sasha the importance that Sasha always demanded. Shreyasi, was one person- who never feared Sasha and came back with witty and mouth-shutting answers for Sasha. Sasha, had even complained to Maan that his secretary was a very head-strong girl, one day- while Shreyasi was arranging some papers for Maan's meetings in his chamber.
Shreyasi had quickly responded, "Ofcourse Miss Sasha Shergill- if I weren't head strong- by which I think you mean "being very determined"- then how do you think I would be working for a boss like MSK- for the last seven years?"
Maan had only smiled and nodded. Sasha, hated Shreyasi even more.
After a period of three months- The HR team of KC had decided to conduct a 3-day workshop for the interns and also other students & employees of KC across the country who would be interested, in understanding the industry and a lot of other socio economic discussions and debates. Geet was also attending the workshop. It was her dream to be able to listen to all the big shots of KC speak and interact with them. Plus, she would also get exposed to various issues that she might not get a chance to learn about in the usual course of her internship.
Maan, never addressed the interns- it was usually Daadima who spoke to the interns and ensured they had a curriculum set in place. She also assigned them a project manager each- to whom they would have to report periodically. Dev would receive and review reports from each of these project managers and brief Daadima about them. However, that particular year- since Daadima was travelling to Australia to meet her sister and her family, she couldn't take up this responsibility. Dev, as always co-ordinated with the project managers- but the reports were sent to Maan for final-sign off every month.
Maan, though refused to spare any time for even a short address to the gathering, eventually did not have a choice but to succumb to his Daadima's lecture.
He agreed to talk to the gathering on various general issues with no specific topic. He also threw open the floor for questions and suggestions. One of the students had asked him, "How they managed to be so perfect in all their architectural designs and constructions- that makes them the most sought after group?"
This was the very question that he had given the exact answer - which Geet had reminded him an hour back. He smiled at how she remembered the answer though its been a while ago now.
Daadima walked into the dining room to find Maan smiling- sitting all by himself.
"Ah ha ha, did the sun rise in the west today, Son?", she asked, winking at him.
"I dunno. I'll check with the weather forecast and tell you", he said, sarcastically.
"Ofocurse you should- and also find out from NASA- if there is any storms and catastrophes in store for this lovely planet", she said, adding a bit more to the sarcasm. Afterall, she is Maan Singh Khurana's grand mom. How could she step back from not taunting him?
Maan raised his eye-brow, "What now?", he asked.
"You get irritated so soon, Maan", she said, laughing , "And that makes me want to irritate you more- see you get angry- control all those angry words you want to say but can't say- because you love me. Awww my poor boy- it's ok, you can vent it all out", she said, laughing even louder.
"Who told you that I love you? I don't love you", he said in a sniff.
"Yeah ofcourse and I'm going to believe every word you say", she said, hitting slightly on his shoulder.
"Daadima, aap hamesha ladte kyun rehte ho?", he asked.
"Correction Son- I only fight with you!", she said.
"Yeah- that's my questions, why only me?"
"Why do you fight so much with Geet?", she asked, winking.
"Cos she irritates me and is stupid at times", he said.
"Yeah- you're smart and very pleasing always- aren't you Maan?", she asked, raising her eye-brow.
"Ofocurse", he said, arrogantly.
She smirked and said, "You live not just in comforts- but also in lot of misconceptions".
"I'm a human-being not any God", he said.
"Chalo shukkar hain- maan toh gaye ki bhagwan nahi insaan hain", said Geet, walking into the dining room with the fruit salad. Maan looked at her angrily and she was about to drop the bowl scared when Dev held it in time.
"Bhabhi, yaar veerji ko dekkhar kho mat jao yaar- fruit salad ko to bachaa liya, lekin sab kuch main bacha nahin paunga", he said.
HE took the fruit bowl from her and put it on the table and turned to Maan, "Hello Bro- if you could please give her some break from your pretending to stare angrily session- she'll breathe".
"Pretending to stare angrily?", asked Daadima.
"Haan, aur nahin toh kya? Aapko lagta hain ki yeh sab sach hain- this gussa and all? ", said Dev.
"Ofocurse", said Daadima.
"Oho Daadima, c'mon! Veerji's a changed specie now. HE only pretends to be angry in front if us- and in private- he'll go and apologize to bhabhi for pretending to be angry", said Dev.
"Dev- I dunno about Maan- but you certainly have some strong misconceptions", shot back Geet. "Apologize- that too your brother? That will not happen in this janam or in the next infinite janams. I've given up hope", she said, sitting down.
"So soon, Geet? In 3 months?", asked Daadima, "I've given up hope after 20 years of Maan being born. 20 years is a long time", she said.
"Kahan 3 months Daadiji- mein toh inhe 3 saal se jaanti'.", and stopped immediately looking at Maan- who absolutely did not react to Geet's statement. He knew he would have to anyway deal with this later on.
"Arey haan, hum toh bhool gaye. Aap tuo ek office mein kaam karte the", said Daadima smiling.
"Okay cut it out both of you and eat now", said Maan, seriously. Geet simply served her food and ate while the words of Sasha still echoed in her ears, "You have been appointed as the Architect for Northern region, Geet. I dunno why and how this is possible- but the HR think you are eligible for the post. You will be reporting to MSK and me. In his absence, you will report to Dev- but that need might not arise since I am the chief architect for KC in India. I make all the decisions and also ratify decisions- if required from all architects like you, who work at the regional offices", she had said, while handing over the appointment letter to Geet, within 8 months of her joining KC as an intern. It was a full time offer that she was made while she was still in college and she could not have been any happier or lucky.
Maan looked at Geet- and knew what she was thinking. That's where both their lives changed- for the best or the worst- they did not know. All they know- is that they are husband and wife now. Was this their destiny? Even that was unknown to them. Do they love each other? Well, that question too did not have an obvious or a definite answer. Why did the twist come or what went wrong? When they look back at their lives in the last three years- what should have been a happy, successful, secluded life for Maan- turned out to be not-so-happy and definitely not secluded life. And what should have been an energetic, bubbly and cheerful life for Geet filled with loads of love and respect- turned out to be the exact opposite for her.
Yet, she did not complain and he tried not to complain. Because somewhere she was grateful to him-grateful that because of him- her family is happy, because of him- she's safe and in an respectable house and because of him-she's trying to be the Geet she was before. And about him- she definitely bought life, joy and smiles to his home that was just a mansion before she arrived. He loved to taunt and complain- well that's how he is- non-adjusting, non-comprising and full of attitude-after all, he's the Maan Singh Khurana. But he tried very hard to refrain from complaining about her for the silly mistakes she makes or the stupid ideas she comes up with or even for her non-sense talk. He tried not to hurt her or insult her- though his anger and blood pressure would shoot to the sky at times, thinking of various things.
