Parineeti Chopra: What the heart wants

Parineeti Chopra

It's safe to say that Parineeti Chopra today has created a space for herself in an overcrowded Bollywood. So forget calling her Priyanka Chopra's cousin, instead say hello to the actress who's won the Special Mention award in this year's National Award Ceremony. While the actress should be over the moon about the fact, she, instead, of sounding excited is all calm as she talks to After Hrs in a quick telephonic interview.

Point out to her that she's being touted by the industry, audience and media as 'the most promising actress among the newer lot' and Parineeti says, "If that (acceptance) didn't happen, I don't think I would have become an actress. Becoming an actress was never my plan so Thank God for that." So, even as you wonder if the positive attention leaves her excited, the actress rather nonchalantly says, "You know, no one can really predict what can happen in this industry. Your life can change between two Fridays here, so while I am hoping that the good going lasts for years, I won't be worried if it all goes on a downslide tomorrow. That is precisely why the success doesn't excite me."

Starting with her bubbly Delhi-girl role in Ladies Vs Ricky Behl to Ishaqzaade and a couple of biggies in her kitty, one wonders how the actress chooses her roles. "It's complete gut instinct," she states, quite bluntly, adding, "be it anything in my life, from where to go to what to eat or what to wear, I always do what the heart wants. And the same holds true when I choose my roles too. Instead of thinking about the role logically, I say yes based on what I feel in my gut."

Her gut instinct must be working really well because her current projects are the sorts that seem poised to be surefire winners at the BO. "I've just wrapped Manish Sharma's untitled film, the next movie that I am going to start (in April) is Hasee Toh Phasee and after I finish that, I should be starting work on Shaad Ali's next in September." "It's a packed schedule for me," sighs Parineeti good-humoredly before launching into our next question: Is she becoming the actress-of-choice for directors? Or does she have to go through the grind of auditioning for the roles? "Well, I am glad to say that I've not had to audition for the roles so far. The only audition I had to give was for Ladies vs Ricky Behl and I got that role because I was playing around in front of the camera and they felt I fit the role. I didn't have to audition for Ishaqzaade either. I only had to do a character test to see how I could get into the character." About becoming the director's actress of choice, she admits, "I have had directors approaching me with roles, saying 'we thought of you for the role," and this response leaves the actress overwhelmed.
