CHAPTER SEVEN
Zoya draws a shaky breath and looks to the door, her eyes darkening with worry. Ravi's steps are light and quick as he throws open the doors to Hafez's house. He strolls to the center of the room as though he owns the place. He doesn't bother to look around, his eyes lighting up when he sees Zoya.
"Look who we have here." He smirks at her. "It's Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan's beautiful American musibat." The corners of his mouth turn down in an exaggerated frown. "Sadly, you're not so beautiful anymore. I wonder if His Majesty would still want you if he could see you now."
Ravi puts his hands to his throat where the skin is red and irritated. Then he runs his hand down his chest. He is wearing a fresh shirt and his wet hair has been combed away from his face. The factory's stench is gone but smug superiority still clings to him.
"Don't worry, musibat," he says, eyes glittering. "I'll take you. I'm just as good as Mr. High and Mighty. In fact, I'm better. He'll never challenge me again."
Zoya remains silent and looks past Ravi. Asad moves to the doors at Ravi's back to block the exit. His jaw is locked tight as he listens to Ravi's boasting.
Ravi laughs, so full of his own inflated self-worth that he doesn't notice Asad's jacket near Zoya or that the workers have gone. He doesn't even see Hafez crumpled in the corner until Zoya looks towards him. Ravi's eyes follow her gaze and he abruptly stops laughing.
"What? When?" He stumbles back, towards the doors. "How did you...?"
Ravi turns to run out. Asad steps into his path, blocking Ravi's route to freedom. Ravi stops and looks around desperately. He turns in circles, like a dog chasing his own tail, looking from Asad to Zoya to Hafez's prone form then around again.
"There is no way you'll escape me this time." Asad's voice is calm despite the blood fury that makes his eyes glitter.
"How...how did you get here?" Ravi stumbles back, towards Zoya.
"Don't take another step near her," Asad orders, his voice still calm and even. "I will kill you with my bare hands if you touch even a hair on her head."
Ravi looks around again. "Hafez, get up! You worthless dog. Wake up!"
Asad takes a step closer. "Hafez can't help you now. No one can."
"I have men," Ravi threatens. "Many men who work for me. They'll tear you apart if I call them."
Asad is not deterred. "I'll crush your windpipe before you even draw breath to scream."
Ravi looks around again. Suddenly he lunges for Zoya. Asad tackles him, taking Ravi down to the cement at Zoya's feet. She shrieks and scuttles away. Ravi flings his arm out, trying to reach her. Asad grabs Ravi's hand and bends it backwards. Ravi's high-pitched scream can't drown out the sound of his wrist bones breaking. He stares at his damaged hand in disbelieving shock.
Asad grabs Ravi's jaw and turns his head to face him.
"You miserable, sniveling coward," Asad snarls. "I knew you'd go after her." He slams Ravi's head against the cement floor. "Maggots like you always go after the most vulnerable targets."
Ravi tries to speak but Asad wrenches his head again, this time towards Zoya. "Do you see what your dog did to her? Do you?"
Ravi tries again to speak but Asad's grip is so tight that Ravi can only gurgle.
"Do you see what I did to him?" Asad yanks Ravi's head the other way, towards Hafez's prone body. "You choose the wrong victim this time. She's not weak as you thought she was. He hurt her but he didn't break her."
Ravi reaches out with his undamaged hand. Asad brings his closed fist down on Ravi's wrist. Ravi utters a muffled scream. His cry is cut off when Asad wrenches Ravi's face back to him.
"No, Hafez wasn't able to break her. She's too strong to succumb to a coward." Asad puts in face very close to Ravi's, his voice so sharp it is almost a hiss. "Instead, I broke him."
Asad punches his open palm under Ravi's chin, forcing his head back. Ravi moans in pain as his body curves to try to relieve the pressure on his jaw. Asad grinds his knee into Ravi's chest, holding him to the floor. Then he slams Ravi's head into the cement again, so hard that it bounces up. Ravi grunts, unable to even moan because of the pressure of Asad's hand under his chin.
"Please, Mr. Khan, stay calm," Zoya pleads. "He'll suffer brain damage if you keep hitting his head against the cement."
"I am calm." Asad speaks to Zoya but keeps his gaze on Ravi. "His brain is already damaged. He thinks it's okay to abuse people. Worse, he thought I'd leave you to him." Asad releases Ravi's head to wrap his hands around Ravi's throat. "Did you honestly think I'd let you put your filthy hands on her?"
Ravi shakes his head, unable to speak.
Zoya puts her undamaged hand out in a pleading gesture. "Mr. Khan, let him go. You'll gain nothing from killing him."
"Not true." Asad's voice is still calm, almost reasonable. "I'll gain great pleasure from watching him die. It would be a favor to the world to rid it of this parasite."
"Don't do this." Zoya shuffles closer to them, but still stays out of reach. "You don't want his death on your conscience."
"He deserves to die for what he allowed Hafez to do to you." Asad's eyes burn fever-bright as he finally looks up at Zoya. "And for what he planned to do."
"But he didn't get the chance." She keeps her voice low and soothing. "I'm safe now."
"That's not because of him!" Asad refuses to be placated. "If you had been anyone other than yourself, less independent, intelligent or calm in a crisis, you would have panicked." His eyes are dark with remembered fear. "You saved yourself. He had nothing to do with it."
Ravi makes choking sounds as Asad's grip tightens around his throat. He tries to wiggle his body but Asad holds him firmly to the ground.
"He can't breathe!" Zoya cries out. "Please, let him go."
"No!" Asad snarls. "This vermin doesn't get to live because he was stupid enough to think you'd be an easy victim. He wanted to hurt you!"
"Asad!"
Asad and Zoya both jerk at the sound of Asad's name. They turn to look towards the doors. A well-dressed, middle-aged man stands there, flanked by several other men who are near his age but not so elegantly dressed.
"Asad, let my son go," the man orders.
"No." Asad doesn't loosen his grip on Ravi's throat. "Either I kill him now or I turn him over to the police. He has to be punished for what he did to Zoya."
Mr. Gill looks past Asad to Zoya. He gasps in horrified shock. "Dear God!"
"Do you see what he did to her?" Asad demands. "And he planned to do worse."
Asad slams his knee into Ravi's chest. Ravi gurgles in pain. He moves his arms but his damaged hands are useless.
"Asad, please, stop," Mr. Gill pleads. "I know Ravi did wrong. I'll make sure you're compensated for what he's done."
"Compensated!" Asad's face flushes with his fury. "Do you think there is any amount of money that can make up for the pain and terror she endured? There is nothing that will erase what he's done to her."
Mr. Gill steps closer but stays out of Asad's reach. His assistants hover near the door, watching the scene with stupefied shock. Ravi gurgles again, his face darkening from the loss of oxygen. Mr. Gill turns his pleading eyes on Zoya.
"Please stop him," Mr. Gill begs. "I'll give you anything, anything at all. I'll punish my son however you choose. Reason with Asad. Save my son."
"He doesn't deserve to be saved." Asad turns back to Ravi, watching the life ebb out of him.
"But you do." Zoya crawls to Asad's side. Her movements are slow and forced, but she is determined. She wraps her hands around Asad's wrists. "Let him go. You don't deserve to spend the rest of your life labeled a murderer."
Asad shudders but his grip doesn't lessen. "He needs to be punished for what he's done."
"I'll punish him," Mr. Gill promises, still staying a safe distance away. "I swear to you, he'll be punished. But my honor, my reputation. Asad, you know how important honor is."
"There is no honor in allowing him to get away with what he did to her." Asad's voice is unrelenting. "He has to pay for what he did."
"But must we suffer along with him?" Zoya asks softly.
Asad looks to her, his brows drawn together in confusion. She leans in very close and looks directly into his eyes.
"If you kill him, you'll go to jail. Think about what that would do us. How will your mother or brother and sisters survive without you? You know how much we need you, how much we rely on you. Would you really abandon us for revenge?" She slides her hands down to cover his. "You call me musibat. If you're not here, who will I rely on when I'm in trouble?"
Asad stares at her for an endless moment. Then he looks at her small, delicate hands covering his bigger, stronger ones, cuts and blood defacing their skin. A muscle ticks in his locked jaw as his grip on Ravi's neck goes slack. Zoya wraps her hands around Asad's and tugs on them.
"Let him go," she coaxes. "Please, he's not worth it."
Wordlessly, Asad allows her to pull him off of Ravi. Ravi scuttles away, towards his father, his damaged hands dangling uselessly at his sides. Asad watches him go but makes no move to stop him.
Zoya takes a shallow breath and releases Asad. "I..." she begins then stops as her body sways.
"Zoya!" Asad catches her and cradles her against his body.
Mr. Gill rushes up to them. "Is she okay?"
Asad gives him a savage glare. "No, she's not okay. She needs a doctor."
"Yes, yes." Mr. Gill pulls out his cell phone. "I know an excellent doctor in Guspind. I'll call her to let her know you're coming. She'll be waiting for you."
One of Mr. Gill's assistants picks up Asad's jacket and dusts it off. Asad carefully wraps Zoya in it and brushes the hair back from her face. She gives him a small, tired smile.
"He...he's crazy," Ravi gasps, fighting to get air through his damaged windpipe. "He attacked me for no reason."
Asad turns towards him but Mr. Gill is faster. He crossed to his son and backhands him across the face.
"You arrogant, greedy fool!" Mr. Gill yells. "I gave you everything and this is how you repay me? You have nearly destroyed my business and my reputation. Worse, you've hurt people. This girl, those workers, they are all suffering because of you." He slaps his son's other cheek. "You will get no more money, no more chances. You are no longer my son."
"Papa, no!" Ravi cries. "I was trying to save money, make the business better. I beg you, you can't disown me. I'm your son." Ravi holds out his damaged hands in supplication.
"I have done you my very last kindness. I asked this wonderful girl to save your miserable life." Mr. Gill looks at Ravi in disgust. "Why did God curse me with such a useless excuse for a child? Why couldn't you be like Asad? He's strong and noble. He protects those he loves and those who are under his care." Mr. Gill kicks at Ravi's broken hand. "You no longer exist for me."
Ravi cries out, high and sharp. Asad spares Ravi as single disgusted glance before he lifts Zoya to his chest and turns for the door. Mr. Gill rushes to his side.
"Please accept my apologies," he pleads. "I promise to make this up to you. I will replace the beams for free and pay for all damages."
"Your apologies and your money mean nothing to me." Asad steps around him.
"Wait!" Zoya's voice is weak but clear.
Asad stops and looks down at her. Zoya's attention is fixed on Mr. Gill.
"You promised me you would do anything if I saved your son, right?" she asks.
Mr. Gill nods. "Yes, I did. I'll give you anything you want. Name your price."
"I don't have a price." Zoya's torn lip bleeds again but she ignores it. "I want your word that you'll take care of your workers and their families."
"Yes, of course I will," Mr. Gill agrees. "I'll pay all your medical expenses as well. Anything you need, I'll take care of it."
She shakes her head then winces at the pain it causes. Asad sucks in a harsh breath.
"We have to go." His voice is sharp with anxiety. "I have to get you to that doctor in Guspind right away."
Zoya gives Asad a small, reassuring smile. "Just one more minute." She looks back at Mr. Gill. "The conditions at your factory are terrible. The children should be in school. Many of the women are sick from living in that filthy shanty. They're all bruised and afraid." Tears fill her eyes. "No one should have to live that way, Mr. Gill. Don't let that continue."
Mr. Gill stares at her, awe and amazement on his face. Zoya brushes her tears away with a shaky hand. Mr. Gill comes out of his trance and nods vigorously.
"Yes, of course," he agrees. "I'll begin right away. What else do you want?"
"I don't want anything but your promise to do right by your workers. Do I have your word?" Zoya persists.
Mr. Gill nods slowly. "Yes, on my honor, I promise to take care of my workers and their families."
Zoya gives him a small smile and slumps against Asad, all her energy spent. Mr. Gill continues to stare at her until Asad tries to move around him. Mr. Gill steps into his path.
"Asad, you are the most fortunate of men." Mr. Gill's voice is deep and solemn.
Asad's eyes narrow in suspicion. "What does that mean?"
Mr. Gill smiles at Zoya. "She is an angel." He looks back at Asad. "Few men are blessed to have a wife as compassionate and generous as your Zoya."
Zoya summons enough energy to respond to Mr. Gill. "No, you misunderstand. We're not --"
She breaks off with a small shriek when Asad shifts her in his arms. She wraps her undamaged arm around his neck. Asad carries Zoya out of the house of horrors and into the bright afternoon sunshine.
