If you thought TV serials are increasingly borrowing song-and dance sequences from Hindi films then you have probably not noticed their own customised songs for the shows. 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai', 'Diya Aur Baati Hum', 'Balika Vadhu', 'Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha', 'Devon Ke Dev Mahadev' and 'Veera' are some of the serials who have taken the 'original' route to entertainment.
Producer Rajan Shahi who has created at least 45 original songs for Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, says, "Four years ago, I took a very conscious decision that I won't use a single film song for Yeh Rishta. This is the show's USP. I have roped in the likes of Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. Some of the songs have also been sung by our own actors. Hina Khan has sung a solo. After the show completed 1,000 episodes, the channel actually compiled all those songs and ran a special three hour episode with only the songs and the actors' bytes."
Producer Mamta Patnaik added, "In Veera, we never used a film song. We recently recorded a song for Lohri, where Ratan is missing her husband during the festival. So from a happy moment, there is a smooth transition in the song into Ratan's small world. We are creating two more songs for Veera. The original song stays with the people while the audience associates particular images with a specific song borrowed from a film."
Not only are budding singers, lyricists and music composers getting the opportunity to showcase their work through these ventures, even known names are being roped in. "We had roped in Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for two of our songs earlier. We can only use one minute of a film's song in each episode according to the law, which sometimes becomes restrictive," said Yash Patnaik. He added that creating a song and shooting a video can cost anywhere between 2 lakh to 5 lakh but the song could be used as per convenience.
Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha saw actors Kunal Karan Kapoor and Aakanksha Singh record a song recently. Its producer Sudhir Sharma said, "Using an original song is much more cost effective. It is wise to do it because after all it's my property and I can use it any number of times. Arijit Singh of Barfi! fame has sung a sufi track Teri yaade in for our serial."
The characters of Balika Vadhu also recorded an original music composition for Shiv-Anandi's sangeet ceremony. The lyrics of this song have been written by Mr. Raghuveer Shekhawat, who has also written songs for Yeh Rishta. The lyrics are written keeping in mind the relationship the family members share with the bride to be — Anandi.
Talking about her experience Smita Bansal said, "I was really nervous as I have never tried singing ever in my life. In fact the day we had to record the song I was restless since the time I got up as I was really scared about recording the song professionally. But the song turned out to be really melodious and beautiful. I am glad I choose to be part of this special song."
Producer Sumeet Mittal, whose Diya Aur Baati Hum's Bittoo mera hai track, which saw Bhabho and Sandhya dancing has become very popular across social networking sites, said, "Competition badh gayi hai and we need to give our best inputs to keep the audience glued in. The track needed to be original since the lyrics used is situational." Ask him if they are taking any steps to market the song as it is available for free download across websites and he says, "The song is now the channel's property and we can't do much about it."
Singers like Shankar Mahadevan feel that the channels should take the initiative and market them the same way film songs are. Otherwise the effort is wasted. He asks, "If there is an original script for serials, why not have original songs? We agree!
