Chapter One: Just The Beginning
"Suman," Rashmi whispered softly into her ear. "Suman, wake up!" She was still lying there in bed with her hands and legs sprawled out. "Suman we're getting late! We have to go to our basketball game!"
"Oh no!" she suddenly got up. "I'm so sorry, I wasn't listening, Rasham. I was having this awesome dream and I didn't want it to end, I'm sorry."
"It's okay," Rashmi said. "Just make sure you pay attention next time."
Rasham is Rashmi's nickname and she is fifteen years old. She has been living with Suman for the past nine years. Yes, Suman is older than her, but only by six months. Her experiences with Suman and her family have been good and also sometimes bad. Suman has gotten angry and has done things to her that were very horrible, but she would eventually forgive her. There are also some things about Rashmi's nature such as, she is very humble, nice, cares about others, down-to-earth, and she lives upon her friend, Suman's happiness.
Rashmi and Suman quickly got ready and told their driver to drive them to school for their second to last basketball game of the year. Within 10 minutes, they arrived and ran into the locker room, to get ready for the big game. The team arrived onto the court and after the referee blew his whistle, the game had begun. The game was about an hour long and Rashmi was making most of the shots on the team, and most of them were three pointers. But Sadly, every time Suman got the ball and tried to make a shot, she would miss.
"Ugh," Rashmi's friend Anjali hollered in disappointment, "Why does Suman always mess up and miss the basket?"
"She should be kicked off the team," said another girl Neha, "It doesn't make sense why coach even let her join the team. She totally sucks!"
"Guys, just leave her alone and give it a rest," Rashmi said with compassion, "It's our second to last game."
"Fine Rashmi," they said, rolling their eyes at each other.
The game was about to end with two minutes spare. Rashmi's team was behind by three points of the other team. The team members did not have much practice, so it was up to Rashmi to help her team win. After everyone passed the ball to each other, Anjali passed the ball to Rashmi. She grabbed the ball and stared at the clock. There were only ten seconds left. She quickly threw the ball while standing at the three pointer line and it went in the basket. Everyone was cheering, shouting, and was proud of her team. The coach was quite impressed by Rashmi's performance. It was the teams first win after a while. After the game ended, Mr. Thakur drove Suman and Rashmi home.
"I totally sucked," exclaimed Suman in disappointment, "I can't believe I missed every basket. That's the worst I've played this whole season!"
"It's okay Suman," Rashmi said comfortingly, "I know you'll do a lot better next year!"
"Yeah, maybe," she sighed. "Papa," she asked, "Me, Naina and some of my other friends are going to hang out at the club tonight. Is that okay?" asked Suman.
"Sure, you can go, but is Rashmi coming with you?" he asked.
"No Mr. Thakur. "I'm not going."
"Oh come on, Rashmi! It'll be fun!" exclaimed Suman.
"I really don't want to Suman," Rashmi explained, "I don't like going to those places."
"Rashmi, they're not bad. They are just places where people can hang-out."
"Yeah, but still," Rashmi said.
"Suman, you can't just make Rashmi do something she doesn't want to do," said Mr. Thakur firmly, "She needs to be comfortable."
"Okay, fine," Suman snapped. "Be that way."
Chapter Two: Suman Meets Her Raj Kumar (Prince Charming)
A few hours later, Suman reached the club where her friends were waiting for her. She spotted her friends and went to go see them.
"Hey Guys!" she shouted.
"Hey Suman," they said. A girl suddenly stood up, making a frown at Suman.
"Where were you?" asked her friend, Naina, "And where's Rashmi? I told you to bring her over here tonight."
"I know, I'm sorry," she said, "Ma made dinner late tonight. And Rashmi didn't want to come. She says she doesn't like to hang out here."
"Well, I guess it's okay," said Meera, "At least we'll see her on Monday at school."
"Yeah," they all said.
A couple minutes later, Naina's phone started to ring. "Karan, where the heck are you?" she shouted into the phone, "Come on, you have to come here and meet my friends. Okay, great see ya!" she said and hung up. "Guys, guess what? My cousin, Karan is coming to the club! He should be here in an hour."
"Wait! Are you talking about...Oh my gosh!" shouted Jeni.
"Jeni, just chill," said Suman, "It's just her cousin. Why are you getting so excited?"
"You haven't even met him before. He's extremely cute!" she replied, "I just can't keep my eyes off him."
They all rolled their eyes at her.
"Jeni, you think every guy that's in style is cute," said Meera.
"Oh yeah?" she asked, "Well just wait and watch. Let's see who falls for Karan, Suman or you?"
In the mean time, Suman and her friends decided to play a prank on a guy who they knew was interested in Suman. They decided that they would make Suman go up to him and flirt with him. This wasn't anything new for her so she was pretty cool about doing it.
"Alright, let's do this!" she shouted and got up. Her friends started giggling when she stood behind the guy.
The guy's friend, who was sitting opposite of him, stared at Suman like she was some fashion model. He was amazed on how beautiful she was. She was the prettiest and most popular girl in their school.
"Dude," the guy's friend began, "Suman's standing behind you."
The boy quickly fixed his hair and made sure that he looked good. He slowly turned around and smiled at Suman. He kept staring at her after she said "Hi" to him. She picked up the stool next to him and sat so close to him, that he could smell her scented lip gloss. Pink patches flared on his cheeks, but he continued to observe her features.
She looked around the room and ran her fingers down her shiny, silky hair as she waited for him to speak. Her hair was not long and not too short either. It went two inches past her shoulders and that's how she liked it. She thought short hair looked ugly, and long hair required too much work, so she wanted her hair to be just in the middle of that. She always wore designer wear clothing everywhere she went. Whether it was going to school, the mall, or even the temple, Suman was always dazzled to show off her clothing to the world. Aside from her clothing, her make up also amazed him. She was wearing black mascara, eye liner and eye shadow near her eyes. Suman's eyes were daring to look at and the make-up made them a complete attraction. When his eyes were finally done observing her beauty, he looked at the boredom on her face and was ready to talk to her.
"Hey Suman, what are you doing here?" he asked, slightly embarrassed.
"Well, you see, I have no money, and I'm really thirsty so I was wondering if you could be kind enough to buy me a drink? Please?" she asked in her lovey-dovey tone. His face began to sweat and she wiped it off with her napkin.
"Don't be nervous, sweet-cheeks. All you have to do is buy me a drink."
He gulped once and turned towards the waiter. Suman turned around and gave her friends two thumbs up.
They giggled loudly in response. They couldn't believe she was actually doing this.
"Hey, can I get a drink?" he asked the waiter.
"Sure, buying a drink for your girlfriend?"
His cheeks changed from from pink to burning hot red. He looked like he was as red as a fire truck.
"Anyway, here you go," said the waiter.
Just as the boy was handing the glass to Suman, she took it from him and spilled it over his shirt. The boy's friend and Suman's friends burst into laughter.
"Next time, know the girl's status before falling for her. Boy, I ain't your status. I'm the daughter of Sunil Thakur, one of the richest people in Delhi; and you? I don't even wanna know."
As Suman left, the guy's friend hopped on to the same stool and helped him out. Suman went back to her friends and they all laughed out loud.
"Oh my gosh Suman! I can't believe you actually did that!" shouted Naina.
"That just made my day!" shouted Meera. "Thanks yaar!"
The girls continued laughing until someone stood behind Naina.
"Hey Naina," said Karan as he walked into the room.
"Hey Karan," she replied. Everyone was looking at Karan except for Suman. She was texting Rashmi, while Naina was introducing Karan to everyone.
"And that's my friend Suman," she finally said.
They both greeted each other but Suman wasn't looking at him. She continued texting in a carefree manner. After she sent her message, she took a look at Karan to see why Jeni was so crazy about him.
Her eyes froze after looking at the boy. He was just as Jeni described him to be. He was tall, very handsome, muscular, and was a hunk.
Oh my God! she thought. He is so cute! I think I finally found my Raj Kumar!
"Hi Karan," she said.
He didn't respond though, he just waved at her. This made her a little upset, so she tried to think of doing something that would make him notice her.
"Can someone get me some water?" she asked as she was staring at Karan.
"Suman, you can have my water," said Jeni, "I haven't drank out of it."
"Thanks," she said as she as she grabbed the bottle. A couple minutes later, her phone started to ring.
"Hi Ma," she lied.
"I'm not your mom idiot!" a sweet voice answered, "It's me, Rashmi!"
"Sorry Ma, hold on. I'm not getting a good signal from here," she replied as she left the area so her friends wouldn't see her. "Okay, Rasham," she whispered, "What is it?"
"Mr. Thakur and the rest of your family are questioning me about where you are and when you're coming home," she replied nervously, "I had to lie both times to them, and you know how much I hate lying!"
"What's your point?"
"Are you coming home now?" she asked defiantly, "It's almost midnight, that's my point!"
"I know, I'm gonna come home now," she whispered hurriedly,
"Just give me a minute to make up a story and I'll tell Naina that. See you in half an hour."
"Hurry!" she replied and ended the call.
Suman walked back to where her friends were and smiled fervently, "I have to go home now. It's my mom's birthday, and Rashmi and I are doing a midnight surprise. See you guys later." There was a chorus of byes, but the only one Suman heard was Karan's.
She left the building and was walking in the parking lot. All of a sudden, some guy riding a black scooter blocked her way. He pulled off his helmet and she saw his face. It was Karan. "Need a ride?" he asked.
"No thanks," she said, "I'll walk home."
She started to walk away until she heard him unexpectedly say, "Wait! Well, if no one is going to come and get you, then why don't you hop on my scooter?"
"Well," she said slowly, "If you insist, then I guess I'll go."
I think Karan likes me too. This is probably the best day ever!
Chapter Three : Suman Excites and Upsets
"It's almost 12:30 am and Suman hasn't came home yet," said Mr. Thakur.
"Maybe she's here, but you didn't see her," replied Mrs. Thakur.
"I think your right," he said, "I'll go check her room."
Rashmi was on her way upstairs with food for Suman to eat when she arrived home. All of the sudden she saw Mr. Thakur coming in her direction and when she found Suman's room, she quickly ran inside, slammed the door and locked it.
"Suman, Rashmi! Open the door!," he shouted. Suddenly, Rashmi saw Suman come up the ladder she had placed for her arrival secretly, and helped her come into the room from the window. Suman quickly put on a robe and wrapped a towel around her hair so it would look like she just came out of the shower.
"What are you doing?" Rashmi asked with a bizarre expression.
"Sshhh", Suman whispered, "I'm dressed like this so Papa will believe my made up story".
Before Mr. Thakur could say "Suman" again, she opened the door.
"Hi Papa,"
"Hello Sweetie," he said, "What was taking you so long?" he asked.
"I was in the shower Papa."
"Oh, so where's Daddy's Little Girl?" he asked.
"Daddy's Little Girl?" asked Suman.
"Rashmi,"
"I'm over here," Rashmi said.
"Come over here", he said. Rashmi got up from the the edge of the bed and came to see them.
"From now on, you need to start coming home early," he said while looking at Suman, "And Rashmi, I want you to keep an eye on Suman more often," he said.
"Okay Papa," we both said. After we all said a sweet goodnight and once Mr. Thakur had left, Suman brought Rashmi close to the bed. She noticed that her friend was upset and asked,
"What is it, Rashmi?"
"Because of you, I always have to lie in front of everyone! I hate you!" After that, she jokingly started to hit Suman with pillows.
"Go ahead", she said joyfully. "Hit me as much as you want. This is one of the happiest days of my life."
"Suman, what's making you so happy today?"
"Okay, when I tell you, you'll be as happy as me. Today I met my Raj Kumar."
"Another Raj Kumar?" Rashmi asked jokingly. Suman suddenly made a mad face at her and said,
"What do you mean by another Raj Kumar?"
"Well..." Rashmi started to say, "In fifth grade, people always thought that you had a crush on Rahul Mehra."
"Why in this world did they think that?" she shouted. "I've never liked Rahul before! We were only friends. Who told you that?"
"Sonia did," Rashmi answered.
"I've always hated that scuttlebutt!" said Suman.
"Let's just forget I said that. So tell me, how's your Prince Charming?" she asked.
"He's perfect," she said happily. "He's everything I ever wanted! And oh my gosh, he's so cute! He even rode me home on his scooter!"
"Wow, he seems very romantic."
"Yeah, he really is!" she said.
"Does he have a name?"
"His name is Karan. Oh Gosh, I wish you would've been there too!"
"Oh, yeah, sure," Rashmi said carelessly, rolling her eyes. "If I wouldn't have been here, who would've taken your attendance at home? Here, I brought you some food to eat."
"I'm not hungry, Rasham. Just looking at Karan made my stomach full."
"Oh...okay," she said sarcastically. "Well I'm going to sleep now."
"Okay, see you in the morning," she said.
"Yeah. Have fun dreaming about Karan!" Rashmi said sarcastically in the middle of her yawn.
