I just don't understand what sort of a man doesn't rise up to defend his family and most of all his children. Fine, his relationship with his wife may be severed, but does that mean his relationship with his children is also of no value to him? He stands up for that conniving, manipulative, giggling bimbo, yet he doesn't feel obligated to stand up for his children.
