SRK joins MJ and Shakira

Shah Rukh Khan joins Michael Jackson, Shakira in new book on stardom

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan features alongside Michael Jackson and Shakira in a new book on stardom.

The Indian film celebrity features in the newly launched Transnational Stardom: International Celebrity in Film and Popular Culture, edited by Russell Meeuf and Raphael Raphael.

Charlie Henniker, author of the chapter on Khan, told Digital Spy: "Writing about Shah Rukh in a global context showed me just how well known he is outside India, and outside the Indian diaspora.

"Instrumental in all of this was Professor Rachel Dwyer at SOAS, who encouraged me to take on a subject as massive as SRK. The conclusions of the essay just go to show that SRK is many things to many people - he's such an endearing brand and personality."

Henniker added that he was able to meet Khan when he was in London last year filming the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

"Having met him twice - once by design and once by chance - I can confirm he lives up to his 'filmi' presence," said Henniker.

Shilpa Shetty, Javier Bardem and John Wayne are also subjects of chapters in the Palgrave Macmillan release.

Transnational Stardom: International Celebrity in Film and Popular Culture is out now.

MJ is just way way way way above SRK and Shakira..

There is literally nobody in the world..no country in the world that does not know MJ..

even people have not seen him..will say "do you think you are jackson..." when they see somebody dancing...

True Global start...he could go from Somalia to Korea to Malaysia to agentina to Russia to England and to his home land...and amount of adulation would not change one bit...

Except SRK and Shakira are also adored by fans in countries other than their native ones...purely because of 'country-men' being present in those other countries and raising that popularity... eg, USA, UK, European nations, etc...
For SRK, as a general rule, non-south-east asian crowd does not 'adore' him or are rabid fans...if they've even heard of him in the first place!

The other reason for his so-called fame outside his native country is because those countries share similar cultural points, so Indian movies are telecast/sold there and do rather well, simply from a cultural connection standpoint.
eg. Afghanistan, other south-east asian countries, Korea, Japan, etc.
It just so happened that SRK is a savvy business man and works with producers who are also smart...hence, it was his movie - DON - that was sold to Japan, not Dabangg or Agent Vinod, for example.

I can say with confidence that those in USA, Europe, South America, Africa, China, Japan, who are not south-east asians or have friends from that group, have never even heard of SRKetc.
Even the term, 'Bollywood', is known by only some very recently since certain dance shows - So You Think YOu Can Dance, for eg. - started having a 'Bollywood'-style dancing session.

For Shakira, in USA and UK, etc, non-hispanic crowd may simply know her and her music, but she is in no way a big star.


This is not the case with MJ.
Most anyone on earth likes Jackson and knows him/of him because he transcends cultures/countries/race/language/religion on the pure basis of his work.

His music and dance and VMs speak for themselves.
