'Bigg Boss' shows Ankola the door
DNA
Salil Ankola
Friday, November 10, 2006

Not ready to take the heat after the court upheld Balaji's contention that cricketer-turned-actor Salil Ankola had violated his contract with them, Sony TV has evicted him from sets of 'Bigg Boss'.

A statement issued by the channel said, "We were shocked to hear of Salil Ankola's prior commitments and contractual obligations from media reports.

On confirmation that these news reports were true and that the court had restrained Salil Ankola from appearing on any television show other than the one he is under contract for, the channel took necessary steps as he was in violation of his contract with Sony Entertainment Television. Salil has therefore been evicted from the 'Bigg Boss' house."

Grace under fire

I confess. I have sat glued through all the episodes of Bigg Boss thus far,
insufferable as they have all been. In my mind, I curse the ordinariness of the celebs chosen (Amit Sadh, for Gawd's sake!!), mutter abuses while cranking up the volume to catch the whispered conversations, and yawn through the Bigg Boss' disjointed instructions. But I haven't missed a single minute so far, and am dying to know whether it will be Deepak Parashar or Bobby Darling who gets booted out this week.

Is it the novelty of the show on Indian airwaves? Is it the lack of better alternatives on other channels? Or is it plain voyeurism that wins over all other reasons? You get to see Carol Gracias waking up with no make up on, and where else would you watch Rakhee Sawant roll out chapatis and wring clothes out to dry? Rupali Ganguly's frequent crying bouts tug at your heartstrings, and Salil Ankola's efforts at chopping firewood, tell you a thing or two about the real brawn of macho men.

These folks are not top class celebs, but for a nation as awestruck by celebs of any hue as we are, they do just fine.

The channel has chosen well. The women are the right mix of bitchiness and
sentimentality, the guys are either flirts or earnest gentlemen, and Bobby
Darling, is well, Bobby Darling. In the first week itself, participants have
got down to the serious business of forming groups and pairs, and there have
been gossip sessions galore. The Bigg Boss' tasks could have been more
creative, and the days at the Big House more structured. But hey, with just
so many soaps for competition on the other buttons of the remote, who's
complaining?

What was Salil thinking?

Salil Ankola apparently told Balaji that he was going on a holiday and took on Bigg Boss instead! Perhaps he thought Ekta Kapoor doesn't watch TV

Subhash K Jha

In what could possibly be a major reversal in contractual obligations of television actors, Ekta Kapoor recently scored a victory over cricketer-turned-actor Salil Ankola. Salil has allegedly breached his contract with Eka's Balaji Telefilms to be part of the 13-week game show, Bigg Boss, on Sony TV.

But the real story here is, perhaps, more amusing than serious. Salil apparently said he was going on a holiday and went to Bigg Boss city instead! A source from Balaji said, "Salil had the audacity to pretend that he was taking a holiday when he was actually away from Balaji because of Bigg Boss. Until a day before he left for the show, Salil kept up the charade. How could he think that no one would know where he was? Did he forget that the cameras on Bigg Boss are monitoring his every move?"

On knowing the real reason behind Salil's absence, Ekta's legal department immediately fished out Salil's inflexible contract to remind him that he has to report on the sets of the daily soap Karam Apna Apna. Salil has apparently been asked to leave Bigg Boss and report to work at Balaji immediately.

"The real reason why Salil was handled legally isn't because of the lie that he told about going on a holiday. The fact is that the serial Karam Apna Apna was suffering. How can an actor simply relinquish his responsibilities to be part of a game show? Others actors working for Balaji, like Aamna Sharif, were also offered Bigg Boss but they didn't go for it like Salil," added the source.

Incidentally, Deepak Parasher, who is a part of Bigg Boss, is also under contract with Balaji Telefilms. "Although Deepak is also under contract with Balaji, his contract is more flexible," said the source from Balaji.

Explaining the matter, Sony's Sandiip Sikcand said, "This is a matter strictly between Balaji and Salil Ankola. Our legal department is looking into it. We'll go by whatever is decided. Beyond that I wouldn't like to say anything."

Excuse Me!

Some other excuses Salil Ankola could well have given
• I have been selected for the World Cup.
• I am doing Karan Johar's next.
• I love facing the camera, especially when I am brushing my teeth.
• I need to hibernate, given Mumbai's harsh winter.
• I am over-worked and really need to rest.
• I have never co-stared with Rakhi Sawant before.
• I need a break to attend acting classes.

The ball is in Ekta's court: Salil Ankola

Whazzat? Ekta Kapoor
