Shahrukh Khan was not what he is today back then. He had done some TV serials and landed in Mumbai looking for work. Karan Johar was just a kid with a lot of 'puppy fat' as his mother would put it and somehow Anand Mahendroo who may have heard about the 'fat son' of Yash Johar from some source called up Karan's mother and asked her to send him for an audition at his 7 Bungalow's office. He needed a fat boy to act in his TV serial. Karan reached there in the morning and waited for Anand Mahendroo to call him inside his chamber. He was not alone. Just across him was sitting a young man, waiting to be called in, drinking tea like water. The young man and Karan waited for almost 4 hours before Anand Mahendroo emerged out of his office and asked the young man to come in, requesting Karan to wait for a few more minutes.
The young man told Mahendroo that there was no need to do that since he will be leaving and he was there just to inform that he was not interested in doing the role he was being offered. It was a leading man's role in a TV series. The young man said that he was no more interested in doing TV and would prefer to concentrate on films. The young man walked out of the office after that. He had waited for four hours to tell this to Mahendroo. Karan was called in. Anand Mahendroo was upset and told Karan the name of the young man. ''He is a TV actor called Shahrukh Khan. I was looking at him as a probable to play the lead role in a TV serial. I have better options though.'' Saying this Mahendroo showed him a few photographs, as if seeking Karan's approval. Karan shook his head in yes for whatever Anand Mahendroo said like a well behaved obedient boy. In fact, Karan acted in that TV serial titled 'Dekh Bhai Dekh', with Shekhar Suman playing the leading man.
This was revealed by Karan Johar while he was moderating a session on 'Gatecrashers who made the party: The Out of Towners in Bollywood' at the ongoing FICCI Frames 2013. The panelists included Sujoy Ghosh, Kabir Khan, Gauri Shinde, and Amit Sadh.
