Some reasons why women bosses may be perceived as harsher by their female subordinates –

The woman boss would have no reason to hesitate in ticking off the erring female employees and that too without mincing words or having to worry about complaints of any sexual harassment by her female staff. She could get away with many a harsh word or action that a male boss would be prudent to avoid.

It would be difficult to fool the female boss with the guiles some females use to fool their male bosses. She can also easily see through excuses which a male boss may fail to see.

She could go to any lengths to cross check statements and excuses for unpunctuality or failure to meet deadlines. A sick child, PMS, MIL rows …she has seen it all 😛

She could have access to almost every gossip channel that her female staff may be a part of.

She would rather gather evidence regarding your honesty and reliability than go by any academic credentials.

She would have no reason to tolerate and retain a less competent female staff when she has an offer with better potentials

Most women bosses appear to be equipped with x ray vision and remote sensors that can have access to unimaginable nooks and corners

If she is smarter and better looking than her staff she would obviously invite bitching and backbiting , every word of which would make its way to her ears, and that should be of concern !

She is a woman boss after all and hell's wrath be upon any fool who sees only the woman & forgets the boss in her 😆

Respect , sincerity and delivering the goods is what she expects .Anything less , she is loathe to accept!

You could admire or hate her but never ignore her and oh boy , She is here to stay!

So chin up , smile and bear it ..the woman boss will have her say 😛

Very few humans (unless they are grossly immature) are consciously vindictive or discriminative. However, psychologically we tend to react to environments and behave in a certain manner.

If subordinates don't to be not taking a boss seriously, bosses tend to tighten the reigns equitably. Gender shouldn't play a role. However, reality is different. Male bosses not taken seriously by female subordinates tend to be lax and accommodating to win trust and favors. Female bosses not taken seriously by male subordinates tend to overcompensate by being harsh and bitchy along with tightening rains. At some level or the other the genders of people involved comes into play. It also depends on the corporate atmosphere and company culture. Some companies are simply better than others in maintaining a fair gender neutral environment for all, at all levels.

There's generally an assumption out there that women are by default in solidarity with other women. Not true.

I think we understand that women and men both perpetuate patriarchy and sexism. Being a woman isn't insurance against treating other women badly or being ignorant about the experiences of the vast majority of women.

Having feminist values is a different thing. Women, men, and transgender people can have feminist values, which just means having a progressive analysis of gender and the role of gender in society. Those who deny that kind of an analysis usually have big problems with feminism. Others have a problem with feminism because they have a poor understanding of what it stands for. They have only heard people vilify feminism or claim it's about radical uptight (insert derogatory term for women) who can't take it easy.

As to whether women bosses are vindictive - other than anecdotal evidence and speculation, there is no way to empirically measure this in a qualified way, especially since women bosses are usually measured against patriarchal yardsticks about what it means to be an effective boss. Not to mention other factors like workplace culture.

In general, it is fair to say that most women in top positions and probably had to work twice or three times as hard as their male counterparts to make it to that position. Or they may be treated like tokens. Beyond that, it is hard to make the case that women are one way or another at a workplace because there are too many factors at play.
