hi cynthia,

about gold digger. no clear "knowledge," however this part of asr had something to do with his earlier experience, possibly the story of sheeshmahal which was never articulated properly, luring us with is mystery and secret, where khushi and arnav's past were linked somehow, where the reason for shyam's villainy lay, the story that just got forgotten as the acrimony of the last months grew, and story, character, all was sacrificed.

my best guess: the reason he says there's no place in his life for any girl, he keeps referring to her aukaat, her "status, and calls her a gold digger, your kind of women... etc,. is because there was such a girl in his father's life. one his father was completely besotted with. who brought havoc to the family of asr, or at least the obsession with her did.

there are references to this in many things he says, also nani's vehement opposition to love.

which is why lavanya is perfect for him. she does not stir him at all. "love," "uss ladki," "aukaat," "tum jaisi ladki paiso ke liye..." all are tied togrether in an idea whose explanation was never given to us. so it seemed he was "arrogant" toward women just for the heck of it. he even tells his di, if such a girl who'll matter so much that should she leave i'll stop breathing... if such a girl should come to my life, i'll not let her in. why? was he just like that for no reason whatsoever?

and thanks for reading. haven't read your last couple, today at work... 😆 oh joy.

Thanks for the lovely comments on my analysis of episode-67.
I consider myself as a modern woman too.Though I'm not Hindu, but I think I know much more than La about HIndu religion.I saw in so many Hindi soaps that they portray a modern woman as a wayward atheist. I think they actually don't know the definition of a modern women,A modern woman can be religious and progressive at the same time.

See Sohra I agree with you that sometimes modern women are portrayed badly. In my POV Khushi was more modern then La. She knew how to speak in an official environment, what to dress in an office and what to do for the boss. Ms La did not know that. Her dress code for office became invalid at least a decade back. I mean in our work environment- of course you are told conservative clothing. She was not dressing conservatively. You do not show your legs or cleavage in office. Also in an office we are told no lipsticks or nail-polishes, long nails, perfumes. La was actually hugging ASR in his office, I mean it is known even if you are a husband and wife please maintain your personal distance in the office.

As it happens I know that a legal document is needed to change your name and also the legal document is considered superior to rituals. It does not matter where and how you get married usually. So we know that Khushi changed her name and she did sign on behalf of Arnav which would not have been possible if they did not have a legal document. Now from february onwards they looked like a married couple and behaved like one too. Now looking retrospectively I am skeptical about the remarriage track. Because I think it was done to viewer demands and also since Khushi wanted one. In any case marriage is a legal and social binding- we can speak for hours about two hearts meetings and two bodies being one etc but that does not constitute a marriage unless it has a legal document or social proof of marriage. Most have both. And yes I agree with Indi that when they asked for remarriage some sactity of the previous episodes were disturbed, Like when they confessed after Holi, when Arnav carried her from the steps of the mandir saying she is his wife, when they professed their love in Heer Ranjha, when they were sleeping together in Gupta house, when the almost consummated in hut scene, when Khushi moved heaven and earth to get Arnav from the kidnappers, their telepathy conversations and all. The worst was when she refused to stay back after mehndi and Arnav told her to get out after bringing Shyam back.

hi everyone,

need to clarify about my "research." i read some websites, including sites where lawyers answer questions, can't call it an exhaustive research. however in a couple of them the gandharva rites came up, and the opinion was that under certain circumstances, it is still accepted by law, and should someone wish to challenge it, the onus is on them to prove it. as all legal things, the wording and premiss are complicated.

i was very disturbed by the way in which a remarriage track was introduced.

first, a complete volte face in the wise, intelligent, unafraid girl we saw during the kidnap track. many of us fully expected them to have a private ceremony after that because asr would want it so for her, for her beliefs, everything. a ceremony with mother's kangan, stars, mother's letter, close people, and yes, even pheres, because she loved them so much. asr had heard the whole shebang during preeto's wedding, so for him to plan it for her, or even hold her close and say he'd like to... beautiful.

and since, khushi had grown up hugely in the months with him, for her to say, she no longer feels the need for it, because he gave her the place of trust he did, without any further questions... even more lovely.

aside: they were legally married, he has said it a couple pf times. so anyway, that's done.

however, there still could have been a gorgeous ceremony. but what was dadi? avaidh marriage? drawing room scene about their right to live together? did not feel like ipk. and then asr agreed to marry his legally wedded wife again? for whom? khushi actually, if you see the last bit of that sr night, had come down to the room, picked uup the petals on the mbed and gone all soft and happy thinking of his "that i love you dammit." she looked ready to take the step. is that how the writer's wanted to indicate that the beautiful strong woman we saw during kidnap was still there?

why sacrifice her then?

audience, star plus, ph... whatever. net result: dadi

i am pretty focussed on women's issues as such, always raving about portrayal of women in media, her place in society, religion, so when i started to feel that temple wedding had a certain beauty, i was seriously concerned about my sanity. yet, as time passed, and even in that moment, i knew this was their marriage. there was a certain acceptance and adherence there, from both sides, which is hard to explain. but there it was. and i have really enjoyed reading samin's take on how two people in love quarrel and make up. more than any legality, or anything, their powerful feelings toward each other sanctified that moment.

once he put that sindoor, however much he tried to tell himself, she's a home breaker (possibly compared her to "woh aurat"), he could never not act as her husband. and he put that sindoor/mangalsutra before god and fire, only for her sake. he could have just made her sign papers and live with him for six months under that same threat of breaking payal's wedding.

and she was mad at him, went ott (perfectly understandable, this is our samosa eater after all, though i do wish they had handled it with more ken), but somehow his wife.

can't explain this.

then there were the god and fire, chanting of mantras in the background... not an ideal marriage, but a marriage. a different one.

anyway, what's done cannot be undone. a beautiful special story it was. in the end, the actors and a few writers tried to keep the spark alive, i'll just take that and let the ugh go.

Yes Indi we all called that Dadi stopwa for a reason. I am not sure if someone would say that I do not respect elders and all, but she was really irritating. She came to that house with the mission of manipulating Khushi out of the house. Now in IPK each track usually has a subtle social message and if we think the writers did a good job you catch that. We all agree that ARSHI loved each other, Khushi was well accepted in Raizada house and Arnav in Gupta house. In all aspects the authority belonged to Dadi based on age and in Indian culture. So they show how in that culture if some one older is speaking some words how the rest of the family tend to manipulate themselves to that command. The solution is to stay strong and not believe one is right just because they are your Dadi. We saw how everyone was humoring her in the beginning, the highest was actually Khushi and how she gave up when Arnav told her too. In the day she had Khushi out of the house she manipulated three people in the name of Sanskar- Nani, Anjali and Buaji- note neither Mami, Payal or NK said a word. Because Mami was scared of Dadi but still remained quiet rather then say a word because to her Arnav's happiness was important and we saw how she joked that the marriage was a repeat telecast every six months meaning to her the previous one was still acceptable. But to Nani and Anjali the rasms were important. Now the reason buaji took Khushi away was because Dadi said to take her away and she could not keep her because she respected Dadi. Payal remained quiet because she never said a thing in front of the elders even for her own defense and Akash was unavailable to support Arnav then. So that Dadi waited and chose the moment to throw Khushi out. She had made sure that Akash, NK and Arnav were not available when she made her huge proclamation.
She lost every respect I had for her as an elderly when she purposefully tried to break the marriage on ARSHI's wedding day. That was utterly unacceptable to insult Garima in front of all the guests and to tell them to leave. On top the lowest was when she was taunting Khushi when she was waiting for Arnav. She was abusing her authority. No matter how hurt she was that was really low. So what they did want to tell try to follow the right course rather then what a person with authority tells you. So just because your dadi or your mother or father tells you- you do not go and break someone's heart, Because before being a child and a son or a daughter you are a human being and have to follow humanity. Also just because they are your parents does not mean they value humanity more then you. See Dadi had no qualms about criticizing Arnav's mother in front of Arnav, some one who had died because of her son, and that too in Arnav's Nani's house- which is the parental house of the lady she was criticizing. I would say Arnav had definitely more humanity even though he was portrayed as Rakshas there. He told everyone do not mention my father's name and I am not like him. It was evident he disliked him but still he never once said one word accusing him of anything and he pleasently did the barsi's of his parents together and missed both of them.

I think the line he said for money you would do anything- but it actually meant was any job at any capacity and he was saying from the viewpoint of an employer, he was not actually using that word from the viewpoint of a man looking for a mate.

about remarriage, me again. but this time succinctly. 😆

guess what i am trying to say is that if they had worked out a ceremony in the "ipk" way, without making khushi look downright silly, and without dadi, i'd have been ok with it.

the soul went missing.

all the soul was there in the so called "forced" marriage.

that felt like ipk. this did not.

samin, i love your take on dadi and why it became impossible to respect her. my feeling: dadi was never there in the initial ipk story. there were possibly chachaji, another woh aurat, others. dadi was introduced to make an extraordinary serial more "ordinary" serial. ugly, large, one dimensional character. is she ipk?

even shyam, whom i despise, look at the nuances in his character. the initial days when he is falling for khushi, sensitively handled. his quandary, not that he ever considered the morals of the situation or was prepared to give up khushi, but how gradually the ill intent grew, his tender emotions that grew in unguarded moments. his subtle manipulation of anjali, the sensitive acting...

there was writing... feeling... telling... ingenuity. missed all of that in remarriage and dadi.

you're 14. your parents lie dead before you. on the day your only sibling, your elder sister was supposed to get married. i wonder what happens to your mind then. how do you survive? what makes sense after that? and for anything to make sense what do you reach out for? especially when in the midst of the madness comes betrayal from those you trust.

possibly a place in his mind shut down permanently after the event. the gentler, softer, vulnerable, emotion rich place. in its stead he turned to his anger, his sheer refusal to succumb. he would take on this world and talk to it in the language it understood, the language of money, of authority, of hard material success. in this lay power... taqat. a taqat he needed to just get through this pain and reality breaching horror. "himmat dikhai maine." he was young but showed courage and braved the odds.

yet, for a nature as deep as his, there had to be more. to give meaning to this endeavour. to stay sane. to feel human. di was where he anchored all his emotions and without her his world would simply fall apart. no amount of money, power, nothing would keep it standing. it was around her he recreated his link with this unforgiving real life.

he took away from himself any need for personal happiness. watching her being happy was all he needed. at least that's what he told himself in his hour of need... and that's how he survived. and perhaps that's why shyam could fool the heck out of him... he kept di happy.

and now di couldn't be found.

imagine his state of mind.

when he ran up the stairs and his eyes caught sight of her... that pause as he got his balance, himself, back; his eyes just taking her in, disbelief, relief, love, fear, joy, everything in them... one of the best moments i've seen on screen. barun sobti's asr was stunning throughout the next few moments. understated, but deep, moving emotion. a brother, who never put any limits on his love for his only surviving immediate family; now all his outer self kept aside, only his most emotional, dependent side out, yet asr all the way.loved how you phrased that

daljeet bhanot was flawless in her rendition of anjali, now the peeved and hurt elder sister, and then suddenly, understanding his need, his remorse, the absolute loving and giving elder sister. I agree she was the perfect anjali

a pivotal scene where khushi realised exactly how central anjali was to her younger brother's happiness, joy, life. in these minutes khushi internalised in a flash, what keeps asr going. that this love for his sister is his only link to the essential space of human emotion. without it he won't feel complete. This is the first time khushi saw the soft side of arnav

gentle tender music. he comes and kneels before her. she sees him but doesn't acknowledge...

khushi walks up with umbrella.

he looks at his di with the gentlest eyes, a hint of smile,

"toffee se meethi hai... chooran se khatti hai..." sweeter than toffee... more sour than chooran...

anjali looks at him.

"khatti meethi hai teri kahani... anjali di hai sabse sayani," sweet and sour is your story... anjali di is very clever. This was the cutest thing i have ever heard...i was like awww when i heard it...i loved how arnav turned into a little kid saying it

a little poem from childhood, in which memories are kept safe, away from this harsh world. his voice carries the most heartbreaking notes of tears, breaks here and there. his remorse is just as complete as his anger.

this is the clean man with a conscience, an innocence... khushi watches amazed.

"di, aapki bari hai." di, your turn now.

but di looks away. "hum bhool gaye hain," i've forgotten... she is not mollified, not yet.

"papad ka tukda...," piece of papad (aww crisp crackly salty spicy, do i know you?). tired voice with break in it reminds her... khsuhi eyes' widen... is this rakshas?

anjali relents, perhaps she heard that weary note, he is emotionally drained...

"papad ka tukda hai/jab dekho ukhda hai/deta hai apne di ko/aansoo mote mote..." piece of papad is he/always angry is he/gives his di/tear drops so huge...

he looks at her in that pause, so much love and dependence and more in that gaze, the swallowed tears you can almost feel.

"woh hai gussewala... hamara chhote," he is the angry one, my chhotey.

gussewala... I loved this poem!!! again made me go awww when they said it

finally anjali looks at him and smiles... that giving smile of hers.

he swallows... the tears come... the ocean is calming.

"galati ho gayi, di... maaf kar do." made a mistake, di, forgive me. i am getting goosbumps at that delivery.

turns cheek for a slap. she goes to slap, but cups his face instead. says it's ok. but he refutes:

"nahi di... theek nahin hai... duniya ke liye... aapke liye nahin..." my anger is ok for others... but never for you.

and the key issue comes tumbling out... i have nothing to do with this world... my real world is but you. "mujhe is duniya se koi matlab nahin hai (tragic)... meri asli duniya toh aap ho." stress on "aap" superb acting, quiet, felt, real, eyes concentrating each emotion.I was crying like a fool

going deeper into his ultimate fear. di, never get lost again... please. he is exhausted, can't bear this again. from childhood i've seen, those who get lost, they never return. "bachpan se dekh raha hoon, jo kho jaate hain na (tears stung the back of my eyes at his tone, the scared boy in it, i've been there)... wapas nahin aate..."poor arniekins

perhaps anjali is beginning to gauge his state of mind, the terror in him... "agar aap ka dil kare na toh aap mujhe daant lena... maar maar ke meri jaan le le lena, di, par..." whimpering, sobbing, anjali is shaking her head wanting to reassure him, "...ma ki tarah mujhe kabhi chhorkar mat jaana, di."

if you want, scold me, hit me, kill me... but don't ever leave me and go away like ma did.I found this part super cute...he looked like a little vunerable kid

maaa. a nightmare recurs. a little boy in a house of mirrors, mirrors shattering. big bad arrogant asr, within his fragile tender heart, he places trustingly only in his di's care.

finally the music releases toward a higher tempo, till now quiet and as sad as him. she hugs him. watch barun, that is asr... not just any loving brother. even in pain, in fear, in terror, in his saddest memory, barun is always asr,

"achha yeh batao... tumne bhi vrat rakkha hai na." tell me asks his centre of universe trying to take things to even keel, you too have kept a fast, haven't you?

the quiet believer within the perceived atheist, he has fasted on the day of raksha for his dearest one. thsi is to me admirable, sign of a real believer... beyond practice, to the heart of faith.

"acchha tumhe kaise pata chala ki hum tumhe yahan milenge?" how did you know i was here?

he remembers, his eyes say so. anjali turns and catches sight of khushi.

"khushi?!!!" anjali beams.

really? maybe i should do this again and again... anjali pulls his leg... restoration of calm... music lilts ma ga re sa... happy, no longer plaintive.

"di aapko yeh sab mazak lag raha hai?" di, this looks like a joke to you? he's still not completely out of it.

"sorry..."

"khushi ghar wapas aa gayi hai" khushi's come back home.

"chale?" shall we go? cute nod.

"aap yehi chahti thi na?" this is what you wanted, isn't it?

"papad ka tukda hai
jab dekho ukhda hai
deta hai apne di ko
aansoo mote mote
woh hai gussewala...
hamara chhote"

if i'm ever feeling a bit down, all i need to do is come and take a look at these scenes, and inevitably i start feeling better. i am not the go awww at sweet bro sis relationship sort. in fact, quite the opposite. if even slightly badly handled, one wrong note or nuance, i'd have gone gah and rushed off to the hot scenes. but they got it so right, so just so, i had to just give in and just love the whole thing. i could have sworn he was pouting in that last cap. ok, i am officially faintiya.

and so you came, as i knew you would, but what made me know it though?

i stand at your door, last night was it you at mine?
why do you come, why do i?

why do you matter? why do i feel i have that right over you as none other?

it was a few minutes together, yet it was teeming with things unsaid, feelings uninvited that were determined to stay. gold digger... rakshas, the insults flew... the intense dislike. yet below the surface, two human beings were seeing each other, feeling each other... a boy called arnav and a girl called khushi. "she lived on the morning side of the mountain... and he lived on the twilight side of the hill," but unlike in the song, these two did meet.

he's driving madly, desperately looking for di. khushi sits terrified, jolted around,

what if he can't find her... what if she's... g forbid. hey dm, thsi speed, what if the car spins out of control... what if... no. two childhood fears side by side.

he notices her state, grimly "apni seat belt lagao," put on your seat belt.

she fumbles. he stops car... reaches across, so so close, pulls seat belt over, puts it on. rabbba vey notes. so full of "huq," right over her. night before just walked into her house. and now this concern for the "tum jaisi ladki."

eyes helplessly locked on hey hey...

"ho sakta hai... anjali..." she pipes up. one glacial stare is the most logical asr response. right to be rude too.

in his mind he thinks: "kahan dhoondoon di aap ko... kahan chali gayi hain aap, where shall i look for you, di, here have you gone?

she replies on cue: "aap chinta mat kijiye... anjali ji mil jaayngi.," don't worry, she'll be found.

he stops car again... to fight. it's a custom now, practically. a pretty sacred one at that.

this is all because of you... if you hadn't come home, we wouldn't have fought. again voice rising, finger pointing, "sab tumhari vajah se hua hai." it's all your fault. the bristling awareness between them unsettles both. especially him. and there's only one way to handle it, turn attraction into war.

khushi knows he doesn't mean any of all this, he is just worried sick, and spewing nonsense as a result. she is thinking on her feet, wondering where anjali could be.

and it clicks.

"devi maiya... aaj toh shukravaar hai aaj toh dm ke bade mandir mein aarti hoti hai." there's a big aarti at the devi maiya temple. that's all she has to say, and he gets it.

he turns the car around.

(a special thanks to the writers. that toffee chooran rhyme is a classic, and has a wonderful insight into love between two people growing up together. music, direction, utterly brilliant on the two scenes i fell for.)
