CHAPTER 61:
Trying to dampen down his irritation, Maan started the jeep, and after a few tries it thankfully leapt to life.
He kept glancing at her occasionally, willing her to turn towards him, but Geet kept giving him the royal ignore. Maan sighed, they needed to talk. And fast. He didn't want the specter of Sameera casting its shadow on their future, and he needed to come clean with Geet.
Silence and resentment thrummed in the air between them making it difficult for him to start.
Not able to bear her silence any longer, he stated quietly, "Geet. I know you have no reason to believe me, but please trust me for a few more days, like you did a few hours back."
Geet snapped her head, her brows furrowing in confusion, "Aap ye kya bol rahe ho?"
Maan hesitated, he was unused to explaining his actions, and so found it difficult to articulate, "Wo mai kehna chahta tha ke Sameera…."
But the name was enough to hurt Geet! She didn't want to talk to Maan about her. She would much rather spend another night in darkness then listen to Maan confessing his feelings for another woman.
She intruded rudely into his introspection, "Mera sir dukh raha hai. I don't want to hear anything about anyone." And she turned her head to other side, closing her eyes.
Maan's hands clenched over the gear, as he angrily jerked it, increasing the speed to quell his frustration. "Yaha mai isse baat karne ki koshish kar raha hu aur madam mujhe hi attitude dikha rahi hai! Agar usne mujhe chup chap us raat pooch liya hota, to itna kuch hota kya? Lekin nahi! Use apni smartness dikhani thi!"
He turned to cast her an irritated look, however, her scared face and shimmering eyes at once eased his charade and he automatically decreased the speed of his jeep. "Control Maan! Control! You need to make amends, not scare her more you jerk! She is distressed right now! Don't add to her pain. You need to be gentle and show her your feelings because words are not going to work this time." he rebuked himself.
Leaving the touch topic, Maan tried to start a general conversation but Geet was too worn out to take up the few conversational tidbits he offered. She ignored him as she was irritated at being manhandled. She kept looking up and mumbling, when not able to stand it anymore, Maan taunted, "Bas karo Geet! Thodi complains kal ke liye bhi rakh do, sab kuch aaj hi khatam kar dogi?"
"Uski mujhe fikar nahi hai! I am sure, come tomorrow, you will be ready with new ways to trouble me." She sulked and turned away, however her statement made him smile within.
At least she was contemplating a tomorrow with him.
Keeping his eyes on the road he drove for a while before spotting a small dhaba. Realizing she must be hungry as he himself felt famished, he eased the jeep near the joint and pulled it to a halt. Moreover she even needed to take her medicines. Easing out of his seat-belt he turned to her, "Chalo, let's have some breakfast." But she was being stubborn as usual.
"Mujhe bhook nahi hai." Came her mulish voice. However, almost immediately, her stomach defied her in protest. He muffled a laugh as he heard her empty stomach grumble. "I guess that's testimony to your lie!" He teased her. She whimpered but was unwillingly to move.
He sighed. She was now trying his patience, "Geet! Your antics are enough to kill me! I'm dying of starvation here! Tumhe bhookh hadtaal karni hai to tum karo, magar chup chap mere saath chalo. Mai tumhe gaadi me chod kar aise nahi jaa sakta."
"Aap ko meri fikar karne ki zaroorat nahi hai. Mai apna khayal rakh sakti hoon." She proclaimed swiftly and turned away to face the other side only to see the large tava on which aloo parathas were being made. She peered at the surroundings and saw a bunch of people gobbling down parathas and chai. Her mouth was watering just looking at them and she could feel the hunger-pangs, but she had already claimed her stance and now she was not bending in front of him.
"Geet tu bhi na! Kya zarrorat thi attitude dikahne ki? Abhi bhugat! Cutting off your nose to spite your face…" she complained, looking longingly at the sizzling parathas.
But a glowering Maan had had enough of her tantrums for the day, "Chalti ho? Ya utha ke le jaoon...?"
"You wouldn't!" she squealed, opening her eyes wide in defiance, even though she was secretly thrilled. If he forced her to come and eat, then technically she didn't bend down now, did she, she thought gleefully, while maintaining her non-interested faade.
"Try me!" came back his angry growl even as he stepped towards her side of the jeep.
"Theek hai! Aa rahi hu! Jab dekho dhamki dete rehte hai!" She tugged the mirror her way and fixed her hair as she stepped out. Maan gave her a mean look, shaking his head at her drama.
"Geet, waha tumhara wo Batman nahi aa ne wala jo tum itna time waste kar rahi hu. Aur rahi baat meri to I have seen you in worse states." He mocked her.
Not one to be deterred, she retorted, "Aapki problem kya hai? Subah se dekh rahi hu! Bas mujhpe bina wajah hukum chala rahe hai, man mani kar rahe hai, zor zabardasti kar rahe hai."
Not about to let that one go, Maan pulled her back and cornered her against the bonnet, "Kya kaha tumne? Mai tumhare saath zabardasti kar raha hu? Wo bhi bina wajah?" He spoke softly, his voice going husky and eyes turning dark. His each word was measured as he decreased the distance between them.
Geet looked around to see whether anyone was watching them as she tried to push him away, "Maan! Ye kya kar rahe ho? Koi dekh lega!" She cried in consternation.
"Nahi chodunga! Kya kar logi? Waise bhi mujhe to zor zabardasti karne ki aadat hai na!" He snorted, his hands going around her waist, pulling her against him.
"Chodiye na. Please..." She pleaded, embarrassed.
He leaned forward, his lips brushing her earlobe, as he whispered, sending thrills down her spine, "Agar mujhe zor zabardasti karni hoti, to I would have put you over my knee a long time ago! You certainly deserved that after a few stunts you have recently pulled!" he growled and left her to go inside the dhaba, expecting her to follow. But after walking a few paces ahead, he realized she had not moved at all, instead she was busy with her list of complaints directed towards her Babaji. He wondered, how difficult it would be for even Babaji to keep a tab with her constant ramblings.
Waiting a few moments, when he realized she was nowhere close to finish, he took her completely off guard and swatted her bottom to call her attention, muttering a "Chalo!" and walked inside, leaving a flabbergasted Geet.
"Babaji did he just do THAT?" was all she could think, unable to move until his voice came to bring her out of her stupor, "Aa rahi ho ke aur tareeke use karu?"
She gathered her scattered wits, still staring at him with wide eyes, but quickly followed him inside, not wanting to see any more of his demonstrations. As she passed him, she mumbled, "Dusht danav kahi ke!" loud enough for him to hear, and got a burst of laughter for her efforts.
They entered the dhaba, to be greeted graciously by the owner who sat by the counter, and moved in to be seated in one corner. Geet looked around eagerly, her mouth watering at all the delicious smells coming.
A pretty young girl dressed in a traditional salwar kameez with her dupatta knotted casually around her waist came to take their order, eyeing Maan quite openly. She introduced herself as Tani and kept her eyes on Maan, moving a tad bit closer, ignoring Geet as she flirtatiously asked him for the order.
She seemed quite fast for a village belly and Geet could see the grin plastered on her face as she tried to involve Maan in a conversation. Needless to say Geet saw green! While giving an elaborate description about one of the Dhaba specialties, she alleged brushed her fingers on Maan's hand on the pretext of handing him a glass of water, while continuing to give him coy looks.
He ignored it but not Geet.
Her hackles rose as she saw the young chit making cow eyes at HER Maan. She forgot all her self-talk about letting him go.
When Maan turned to ask Geet what she wanted to eat, he was surprised to find her glaring at him, "Abhi kya hua ise? Abhi bhi ghussa hai kya madam?"
"Geet wo…." His question was interrupted as she suddenly got up and came over to his side, inconspicuously coming to stand in between him and the annoying girl. "Maan aap jaayiye thoda haath mu dho lijiye, order mai kar doongi." She said sweetly, while looking at the girl who came to take their order.
Unbeknown to him, Geet's eyes were drilling into Tani sending a message as old as time, Back off! He is Taken.
Her volte face confused him, but he couldn't hold himself back from taunting her earlier nakhras, "Waise tumhe to bhook nahi thi na? Abhi itna utavli ho rahi ho order dene ke liye!"
She turned to glare at him, her eyes a fierce red, shutting him up. "Aap jaa rahe ho ke nahi?" She ground out between clenched teeth.
Afraid of her sudden fierce demeanor, Maan got up and raised his hands surrendering to her, "Jaa raha hu baba!"
"Good!" she again smiled sweetly at him; however it came across more as a snarl. Maan escaped from there wondering what had just happened, "Woman!" he sighed, "Aaj ye pakka mujhe pagal kar ke chodegi!"
As soon as he left, Geet glared at Tani and gave the order, which the girl noted down sullenly almost in a disinterested manner.
Maan was freshening up by the tap outside, feeling better after washing away the grime of the journey. He removed his shirt and kept it aside, and moved his head beneath the tap to wash his hair.
The sight of his muscles bulging out of his black vest, added to the water droplets kissing his face gave was a sight worth seeing. And two people were definitely seeing it. While Tani was drooling over this magnificent vista in front of her, lost in his masculine grace and beauty, Geet was watching her as she watched her husband. Gnashing her teeth, she wished she could wrap her hands around her throat.
Taking her chance, Tani quickly sidled up to him and offered him her dupatta to wipe of the water streaming down his face. Geet's her eyes popped as she saw that shameless girl flirting with her husband. She got up furiously and marched over to the duo, furiously pulling Maan away from her, before Tani could touch him.
"Tumhari madad ki zaroorat nahi hai! Tum jao yaha se, apna kaam karo!" she stated rudely and taking the end of her own dupatta started wiping his face and shoulders. She glared at him while doing so and snatched his shirt form the rack he had placed it in, stuffing his hands in it, "Aur expose karne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai!" she charged at him, her eyes widening to send her point across.
Maan who was just about to give the girl a piece of his mind, was surprised at this sherni avatar of his wife. His tube light clicked and he realized that Geet was jealous. He grinned to himself as he heard her telling the girl off, while enjoying her ministrations as she deftly wiped off the excess moisture.
To Geet's irritation, Tani came back to serve them. Geet was famished, but looking at the shameless hussy in front of her, brushing against her husband's shoulder as she served him killed her appetite. Just as she was about to tell her off, Maan started talking to her, to which she enthusiastically gave her full life history. Maan peeked from the corner of his eyes to see whether he was right and he was granted with the sight of his tomato red wife. If looks could kill, both of them would be dead.
Controlling his urge to grin, he complimented what's-her-name on the luscious food, making Geet angrier by the second. Ignoring the sparks shooting from her eyes, he told her to taste the yummy food prepared by the beautiful lady.
Just as Geet was about to splash the entire contents of his plate on his face, the dhaba owner, Tani's dad came over to enquire about the food. He had been watching from a distance and had summed up the entire scene so came as soon as he could to diffuse the situation.
After he had praised Geet and made her start eating, he dragged his protesting daughter away.
However, Geet's anger had not cooled down, and she kept giving Maan murderous glances all through their breakfast.
Her appetite had returned with the disappearance of Tani and both of them hungrily chowed down the scrumptious meal. Maan kept shooting her cautious glances, not knowing when she would burst; his plan seemed to have backfired and instead of jealous, she had become angry.
Cursing himself for his foolishness, Maan got up saying, "I'll just wash up and be back."
"Haan haan jaiyie! Wo chudail aapka waha intezaar jo kar rahi hogi! I am sure you want that witch to fall all over you! Chi chi Babaji! Inko koi sharam varam hai ya nahi!" She complained. Maan couldn't control any longer and sniggered, making her angrier, "Haan! Usse phone number lena mat bhoolna! Aage jake kabhi yaad aayi uske 'sunder haathon se bane khane ki' to bulwa lena use! Next time to shayad wo aapko apne haathon se bhi khila de!"
"Jab mere pass itni sunder biwi hai, to mai bhala kisi aur ke haathon se kyu khau?" He claimed amorously, and taking her hands which were clenched into a fist, opened them and placed a peck on each. Then he nonchalantly walked away as if he had said nothing of great importance.
Geet on the other hand was busy cursing him, confusion and anger vying for attention. "Ye Maan bhi na!" she cribbed angrily, "Inka to na mujhe kuch samajh nahi aata Babaji! Shaadi mujhse ki, flirt us chudail ke saath kar rahe hai aur pyaar Samee….." her ranting immediately died down as she remembered Sameera.
"Geet tu ye sab kya soch rahi hai?" she mocked herself, "Tu Sameera ko bhool gayee?" pain lanced through her heart as she remembered their current state of impasse. "Dekh, tu unko saaf saaf keh de, ke ye sab nahi chalega! Tu unke saath hai sirf wo contract ki wajah se na? So maintain your distance. Warna dil to tera hi tootega na?" giving herself a strict dressing down, she left from there to await Maan near the jeep.
========
Maan went to pay the bill at the counter but was informed that the bill had been cleared by the woman who was with him. His temper, never too far from the surface, started simmering again, "Ek pal gussa na karna chahoon to bhi ye mujhe nahi chodti hai, yeh ladki mujhe pagal karke chodegi!"
Angrily he stomped towards the car, and without a word he opened the glove compartment and taking out some medicines, he offered them to her along with a bottle of water. She wanted to refuse, but the look on his face told her it was better not to, he would take sadistic pleasure in stuffing it down her throat! So she quietly gulped them down without any nakhras.
His temper cooled substantially and he did not want to create another fight. This is going to be a new start Maan. "Gussa chod de! Galti teri bhi hai na? You shouldn't have flirted with that waitress." He admonished himself.
He got in the jeep quietly and started it, "Agar tum paise dene wali thi to pehle bolna tha na! Mai halwa bhi mangata..." He raised his eyebrows at her comically.
Her mouth formed an O. Not wanting to respond to him she told herself, "Geet sambhal ja. Ye to tujhe pagal karke chodne wale hai! Subah se ajeeb behave kar rahe hai." And she resumed her activity of ignoring him as he whistled out of tune.
The full meal and the effects of the medicine were enough to knock her off to deep sleep again. Maan watched her with a smile as he made his way back home.
What were the things she hates about him? Tai-chi, hmmm; blue shirt, his eyes and his lips... "Well, well, Geet! You are going to see a lot of those from now on. Then you can hate me to your heart's content." He smirked, thinking of a plan.
Waise bhi, he liked the sherni Geet better. The flashing eyes, the pink cheeks, the bossiness and that attitude. Smiling his evil thoughts Maan decided on a plan to keep her so occupied with him that she would never ever dare to leave him again.
