Madhavan is a real player!
When boredom gets the better of him, R Madhavan settles for a game of golf at a golf course near his home. Having played the sport for over three years now, the actor's golf handicap rests at eleven. "I don't get enough time to pursue the game. Whenever I'm in Chennai, I pack my kit and head for the golf course. The best handicap I ever had was seven," says the actor.

Professional act
It's a lesser-known fact that the actor has undergone professional training at the Lead Better Academy in Florida. "I enrolled for a three-week course at the academy two years ago to understand the game better. What I really like about golf is that unlike
my profession, playing this game really calms you," he says.
The actor also loves to splurge on his golf kit. "Usually, a golf kit ranges from Rs 35,000 to Rs 80,000, but one can easily use it for five years," he adds.
The actor even coaxed wife Sarita to sharpen her strokes. After a few months of vigilant training the couple often compete with each other.
Says Madhavan, "I pushed Sarita to take up the game. Whenever I'm shooting abroad, I ensure that I play the game regularly. Initially, Sarita was a spectator, but now she plays like a pro."
Building blocks
However, while filming for Rituparno Ghosh's Sunglass in Kolkata recently, the actor took much interest in another sport, Jenga. Along with the rest of the cast and crew,
he would spent hours playing this popular game, where players have to build a tower using blocks without letting it collapse.
He says, "Shooting in Kolkata was fun. Although I was on diet, I managed to gorge on paani puri and mishti doi. As for the game, the loser had to buy the rest of the team drinks. Considering that I was playing Jenga for the first time, I fared rather well. I bought them drinks only on two occasions!"
It's all about the money, honey!
Organisers for a charity cricket match at Mohali were in for a rude shock when Saif Ali Khan demanded remuneration to make a blink-and-miss appearance at the event.

paisa phekh, khel dekh: Saif Ali Khan
Says Munish Arora, MD of Can and Able Events Private Ltd, responsible for marketing and co-ordinating the match on November 15, "We would have been more than happy to have Saif Ali Khan. But he asked for money from the managing committee for making it to the event. However, I am not aware of the amount he quoted."
Chief Chopra
Now, the organising committee including Chander Shekhar, Additional Director General of Police, Punjab are hesitant to approach well-known faces for the cause.
The cricket match has been organised to raise funds for Athma Shakti Vidalaya's (Bangalore-based NGO for mentally challenged people) opening unit in Chandigarh. Says Arora, "So far Gul Panag, Neha Dhupia, Anupam Kher, Rahul Bose, Sonu Sood and producer-director Vipul Shah have agreed to be a part of the match. We're presently in talks with Sunil Shetty and Tanushree Dutta, among others. We had even considered Kareena Kapoor to be a part of the team. But there were some date problems, so she opted out. However, Mr Yash Chopra has agreed to be the chief guest at the match."
No cheerleaders
The match, comprising 20 overs, will be played under lights. One team will comprise former Indian cricketers, headed by Kapil Dev, taking on the Bollywood gang. If all goes well, Sunil Shetty will mentor his team, comprising even female players like Neha Dhupia and Gul Panag. It is learnt that the actresses refused to be mere cheerleaders and preferred wielding bats on the field. Adds Arora, "No actress is going to be a cheerleader. They're all going to play the match."
The organisers further inform that the former Indian cricketers were more than willing to be a part of the match. Says Arora, "We have heard about Bollywood's generous efforts. But honestly, for the cricket match the cricketers immediately agreed.
The team comprises Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chetan Sharma, Ashok Malhotra, Ajay Jadeja, Yashpal Sharma, Pankaj Dharmani and Ritendra Singh Sodhi. But the coordinators who are liaising with the actors are having a difficult time. There are exceptions and Sunil Shetty, who is in Malaysia currently, is making all efforts to be present at the match."
