AboutThe Show

Diya Aur Baati Hum, is about a Sandhya's struggle, who dreams to become an IPS officer. She dreams to break the boundaries of her narrow confined existence of middle class values. The story is also about Sooraj, who is a sweet talker and a self made man. Sooraj runs a sweet shop near his house which is famous.

Sooraj and Sandhya get married. Sandhya will not be able to finish her graduation. Soon she is part of the family she does not even know. This story is about Sandhya's struggle to fulfill her dream and a journey where she finds help from the most unlikely quarter - a lover who can make it possible.

Characters

Sandhya

Sandhya is a 19-year-old outspoken girl who belongs to a middle class family in Pushkar. She aspires to become an IPS officer, and eventually, a collector. Sandhya is a fun-loving, spirited young girl whose dream is an important part of her character.

Sooraj

Sooraj is a noble, good-looking and sensitive guy who believes in hard work. He had to become the provider for his family from an early age. Hence, he discontinued his studies after passing tenth standard. He runs a sweet shop and has strived to make it a success. Sooraj's mind is like an open book with no malice or hatred towards anyone.

Arvind Kothari

He is in his mid forties and is the common man belonging to the middle class. He is a very honest man who despite being a government officer has never taken a single bribe and never boasts about it. Arvind has always encouraged Sundhya for persuing her dream. But he becomes a victim of a blast and loses his life before Sandhya could fulfill her dreams.

Kanchan Kothari

She is in her early forties or late thirties. Kanchan and her husband Arvind had decided that they will give their children the best and has worked hard towards it. The day Sandhya expressed her dream of becoming an IPS officer, Kanchan has given her full support. Unfortunately she also loses her life in a blast along with Arvind.

Ankur Kothari

He is a 25 year old, Charted accountant/IT professional in a big company. He is very ambitious and wants to settle down abroad. He loves his family but in life he is very practical.

Ankita Kothari

She is a 20 year old, very good hearted, loving bhabhi. Ankita loves her husband and the family. She is very fond of Sandhya and always inspires her to work toward fulfilling her dreams. But Ankur's selfish approach towards life disheartens her to the core.

Santosh Rathi/ Bhabhoo

She is in her late forties and in a way is a ruler of the Rathi family. No one dares to disobey her. She is a perfectionist and could not tolerate any mistake. She is only concerned about her sons well-being and is very fond of Sooraj. She does not give preference to her daughter-in-laws and always choose to ignore them.

Vikram Rathi

He is the younger brother of Sooraj, a sari shop owner and is very manipulative. He is someone who can do anything for money.

Meenakshi Rathi

She is Vikram's wife and Sooraj's bhabhi. She is manipulative and always wears a mask on her face.

Mohit Rathi

He is the youngest brother of Sooraj who is persuing his studies. He tricks Sooraj and draws as much money as he could

Chhavi Rathi

She is the younger sister of Sooraj. Chhavi is of the same age as Sandhya. Rather then concentrating on her studies she always gives preference on her looks. Santosh is very worried for Chavi.

Chaturi

She is a maid in the Rathi house. She keeps cribbing about the amount of work which Bhaboo makes her do but still continues to work for the family. The family is tongue tied and tolerates her. She is fond of Sooraj and Sandhya.
