Because Amit was actually attracted to her. See if he had felt an attraction between him and Amita then he wouldn't mind about the fact that Amita looked different. The world is a shallow place. Beauty is skin deep, but for short meetings (like they had) that's all you get to see.

You know, I was kinda of wondering the same thing. Snehal totally didn't look like the picture... I mean, she is cute but looks darker than her picture, just like Amita😆

I agree with fa.star's reply. He's obviously going to overlook it since he liked her looks in person fine.
However, yes, she is nowhere as glamorous as that head shot makes her out to be. Which in a way is fine with me. Because if she were, it would look ridiculous. And I wouldn't buy that she would be considering him (though it seems she may be having reservations, anyway).
I thought mother and son were way over their heads, but then when she showed up in person, it is more probable.
