Chapter Twelve
"Door Nigahon Se Baar Baar Jaaya Na Karo,
Dil Ko Is Kadar Tadpaya Na Karo,
Tum Bin Ek Pal Bhi Jee Nahi Sakenge Hum,
Yeh Ehsaas Baar Baar Dilaya Na Karo"
Rashid Ahmed Khan had a date with his past tonight. And he was running late. He had finally gathered his strength to face his crime. It was time. Everything was arranged exactly like he wanted. Lala Singh was at his Sehore farm house. And his accomplice had set everything according to his plan. Now all he had to do is be present there to watch the show. As the saying goes, "Revenge is a dish best served cold." So true. He smiled as he drove towards Lala's farm house.
********************************************
Zoya opened her eyes and felt as if her head was falling off her shoulder. "uhm" she moaned in pain. It was dark everywhere and she had no idea where she was. She couldn't remember what happened to her. She tried getting up but felt the whole room revolving. She touched her forehead to make all this rotation stop. Her fingers felt sticky when she touched her forehead. Surprised, she smelled her hand. Blood! She had blood on her hands. Was she bleeding? Her head was surely aching like hell.
She tried getting up slowly. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness around her. Where was she? It looked like a bedroom to her. She got up from the bed and went towards the window to try and open it. But it was latched shut and had iron bars on them. She looked out through the glass pane. It looked like a country scene out side. Like a farm house'Farm House! That's it, she was at Lala singh's farmhouse!
She slowly recollected her memory. 'Rehaan! Allah Miah! I hope he is alright. Please Allah Miah'usse kuch bhi mat hone dena'' she thought in despair. She turned around to find the door. She stumbled across some furniture to reach the door. There was a chair next to the door. In the dark she could make out a silhouette of a person slumped on the chair. 'Was that Rehaan?'
She rushed forward to shake him. "Rehaan! 'Rehaan please utoho...'please" she begged him with tears in her eyes. The body on the chair slumped forward on to her and collapsed on the floor, face down. "Aah! Rehaan!" Zoya screamed. She trembeled viciously. The body on the floor looked dead.
She slowly bent down to feel the pulse. There was none. Zoya was terrified. She couldn't accept that he was dead. "No! No!..'Rehaan you cant be dead" she shook him violently with tears flowing down her cheeks. "No you have get up..Rehaan get up" She turned the body so that she could see the face. It wasn't Rehaan. The body belonged to an elderly man in his 50's. There was a bleeding bullet hole on his forehead. Zoya scrambled backwards in fear. Who has done this? Where is Rehaan? Was he O.k? All she knew for sure was that there was no one else in this room with her.
She got up and ran towards the door. But it was locked from out side. She banged on the door. "Please open up. Rehaan...Please Help!" she yelled. But no one answered. She kept banging on the door. But it seemed pointless. She didn't think anyone was in the house. There was pin drop silence. So quiet that she could hear herself breathe. Allah Miah! How am I going to get out of here? Where was her cellphone? Maybe she could call Mr Khan. She knew he would yell but right now she felt that she would give her soul to hear him growl. She began to look around the room frantically.
************************************
Asad was panicking too. He had been trying to reach Zoya for sometime now but her phone was switched off. His gut was telling him she was in trouble. He tried Rehaan's cell but even his cell was switched off. This was Bad!
There was no way both of them could have switched off their cells. He punched the accelerator. He was already driving above 50. He didn't care. He just had to reach Zoya before anything could happen to her. He just had to. He still had to cover 15 kms to reach the farm house.
He tried Zoya's phone once more. Still switched off. He slammed his fist against the steering wheel. She should have listened to him. She never listens. This time when he finds her, he was going to lock her up in her room until her Jijju and Aapi came to get her. She won't be allowed out of her room until then. He promised himself. Her precious project could go to hell.
As he turned the car around the bend, his headlights picked up a parked Suv in its light. It was one of his own, he recognized it immediately. He slowed his car and jumped out of the door. His heart beat against his chest as he ran towards it. There was no light in the car and as far as he could see no one was sitting in it either. He ripped the door open to find Rehaan slumped side ways on the driver side. He looked inside the car to find Zoya. But she wasn't there. He swore viciously. He checked Rehaan's pulse. The man was alive but unconscious. Asad shook him awake "Rehaan'Rehaan get up! Get up! 'Rehaan listen...'wake up!
He opened the side door to remove the water bottle and splashed some water on to Rehaan's face. "Wake up! Rehaan'Get up now!
Rehaan woke up, slowly opening his eyes. "What happened?"
"You tell me!" Asad snapped at him "Zoya kaha hai?"
Rehaan tried to sit holding his head "I don't know. Where am i?"
Asad grabbed him by his collar, "I need you snap out of it now! Remember what happened! Tell me what happened to Zoya!" Asad knew he was losing it. But he couldn't help it. Panic was grabbing his throat.
Asad's panic transferred to Rehaan. He got up "Last thing I remember, we were at the farm house. Zoya was talking to you on the phone. I went in to look for Lala Singh. Some one came behind me and hit me on the head with it. Next thing I remember is you waking me up."
Asad tried to think logically. It was difficult. "I spoke to Zoya 45 minutes ago. Her and your phone has been switched off ever since. We are 15 minutes away from the farm house. May be she is still back there." He ran towards his car with Rehaan and zipped off towards the farm house.
********************************************
Rashid reached the farm house and saw Lala's car parked in the garage. The house was completely in the dark. Looked like his accomplice had a flair for drama. He smiled. Tonight nothing would go wrong. He walked up the graveled path. He wanted to visit his quarry for one last time. He wanted to see the fear in his victim's eyes and watch the suffering, just like he suffered for past 17 years. He pulled out his flash light and walked through the living room. He was just going to have a look and speak to his prey one last time. He removed his revolver and climbed the steps to go upstairs.
***************************************************
Abbas walked back to the farm house. He had done everything just like his bhaijaan instructed. Tonight, nothing else would go wrong. He had locked the girl upstairs in the room. Then he had drenched the house with kerosene. After that he drove the boy far down the road, away from the farm house, so that he would be safe. Now he was back to finish the job. All that was left was to set fire to farm house and get away from here undetected. Shouldn't be a problem at all. He walked towards the back to burn the wooden logs which he would then throw in to the house.
******************************************************
Zoya heard some one coming up the stairs. Her first thought was to scream for help. But some instinct warned her against it. What if the person was the enemy? She hid under the bed and tried to calm her breathing.
She saw a shadow against the window that opened in to the corridor. It was a tall man. It couldn't be Rehaan. She didn't know who he was. She was terrified. So she closed her mouth with the palm of her hand, afraid that she would whimper in fear. The shadow moved towards the window and wrenched it open. Zoya wanted to scream.
She tried to catch a glimpse of the person. But couldn't. she stretched forward to take a look. Then she saw him in the moonlight and she froze. It was Rashid Ahmed Khan. Jahapanah's father. What was he doing here? She was just about to call out to him when he laughed loudly.
"How does it feel to be trapped?" he asked chuckling
"You are finally feeling what I have felt for past 17 years. 17 years I have been waiting to complete my revenge against you. I knew you would come here. I was waiting. You are the only person alive who can connect me to the Khandhar wallah building scam. Only you. Did you actually think I would let you live? I lost everything because of you and them. Now I am taking everything back. Did you hear me?"Rashid laughed loudly.
Zoya was not hearing Rashid at all. She was lost in her dreams. Memories that were long forgotten started to churn up within her. She remembered hearing that laugh that night. Her mother was with her then. She had seen him in that building corridor on that night. And even back then he was laughing at someone or with someone'She wasn't clear. But he was there the night she lost her mother. And then there was screaming and a gunshot. Then her mother collapsed against the wall. Allah Miah! Someone had shot her. But who? She couldn't remember his face...'
***********************************************
Abbas threw some lit wooden logs in to the house and watched the it engulf in flames. He smiled. It was smile of satisfaction. Of a job well done. He waited for the fire to become big. Now all he had to do was walk back to the road behind the house and drive away in his car. No one could save that girl or Lala tonight. He was just about to leave when he heard a car crunching in to the drive way. "What the hell!" he swore "Who is that?" He snuck behind a tree to watch. He saw the boy whom he dropped at the highway run past him with another person whom he didn't recognize. The man was yelling for some one, probably the girl. But it was too late. He wanted to tell them that she wasn't going to make it. But he did no such thing. He just lurked in the shadow to watch the show.
**********************************************
Asad felt as if his whole world was falling apart. The farm house was on fire and Zoya was in there. The fire had become huge and all the entry and exist in to the house was blocked by wooden beams and collapsed walls' ...But Asad didn't care. He still rushed towards the house trying to ply open a way in. "Zoya!" he yelled for her. Hoping against hope she would respond. May be she was still alive. "Zoya!" he yelled again.
Rehaan tried to pull him back. "Asad don't be stupid...'there is no way in. You will get yourself killed"
Asad pushed Rehaan aside and grabbed his collar "Do you think I give a damn? If she dies...'if anything happened to her...'I might as well be dead' " he shoved Rehaan aside and again started shoveling through the burning debris. Rehaan stood for a moment. Then came forward to help him, silently praying for his friends well being.
**********************************************
Zoya couldn't remember the face of the person who shot her mother. There was fire all around that night. It was hot and smoky'Just like it was now. She remembered hiding under the bed the night her mother died. She was hiding from the bad man. He was going to find her. She was scared and he was going to find her. Her arm got burned and she screamed. Her memory from the past merged with the present. She opened her eyes and found that she was screaming too. The room was on fire. The door burst open. Rashid was standing in the door way. "Zoya?" he came forward towards her. "Zoya are you ok?" he asked'...Zoya tried to scramble away from him. "Get away from me! She screamed. "Murderer!" she screamed again... then she fainted.
**************************************************
Rashid caught her just as she fell. She was mumbling something. It wasn't coherent. He could hear some one yelling her name downstairs. He picked her up in his arms and carried her downstairs. Which was in it self a difficult task. He had to dodge the fallen beams and the flames. Just as he reached the ground floor a section of wall caved in. He walked through the narrow space with Zoya in his arms. By the time he reached outside he was coughing wildly. He saw Asad and another person rushing towards him. "Zoya!" Asad called out. He pulled her from Rashid's arms. He sat on the ground taking her with him, hugging her tightly. "Zoya! Zoya wake up! You are safe now!" Asad kept repeating those words over and over again. Then the other person brought a blanket and covered Zoya with it. Zoya was still unconscious. Asad didn't care he was still rocking her back and forth, holding her tightly. Periodically he would kiss her forehead. Suddenly it occurred to Rashid, Asad was in love! His son was in love with that girl.
********************************************************
Abbas saw the whole show. Damn it! The girl was safe. They managed to save her. How in the hell was he going to break this news to Bhaijaan? It was better that he left this place before he got caught. He snuck away quietly. He never knew that Bhaijaan was already watching.
