D-Bang On Success Of Sonakshi

"I Am Not Sitting Jobless At Home. I'm Busier Than Most Other Heroines!" ' Sonakshi Sinha

The glossy you're holding is controversies' pet name. The young lady on the cover prefers to stay miles away from any breed of hullabaloos'romantic, professional or just something trivial. She likes to keep it clean, and we're not whining about that. Our undercover news agents have always dug out the snazziest truths and we've presented them all to you, uncensored! For instance: we reported Miss Shotgun was allegedly in a relationship with Bunty Sachdeva, a close associate of hers.

She rubbishes it saying, "Let people write what they want. My family and I know what the truth is." We decided not to probe further. The gentleman next to her, holding her like an actor would hold his Oscar trophy, is young and has made a mark with his debut. He has instantly emerged as Bollywood's youngest heartthrob within the first two shows of his movie, his dream debut, Karan Johar's Student Of The Year. He's not signed his second film yet, but reads one script a day and is scouting for that right second film after his perfect first.

Hesitant to share the frame with the dishy, lean-bodied, and bare-chested Varun Dhawan, (at least as said by her associate), Sonakshi Sinha agrees after being coaxed and convinced that it won't tarnish her Miss Goody-Two-Shoes image. There's little discomfort visible on her face and evident in her gestures at the outset. But this dabangg heroine metamorphoses into a diva the minute ace lensman Dabboo Ratnani calls the shot. Sizzling in a short dress and curls, Miss Sinha and supremely hot Mr Dhawan, two superstars of tomorrow, grace the cover and speak candidly about all that matters to them, and even stuff that doesn't!

Stardust was the first magazine to bring Ranveer Singh and you together on the cover. This time, it's Varun Dhawan. Are you game if some director offers you a film opposite him?

Why not? It depends on the script. If the role appeals to me then I would love to do a film with Varun. He showed how talented he is right in his debut film. People appreciated him for his performance. Not only his looks but also his dancing is superlative. So if something good comes along, I'm sure both of us would love to do a film together.

What did you like about Varun in Student Of The Year? Siddharth Malhotra or Varun, whom did you find more convincing?

Don't give me a choice (Laughs)! I will be diplomatic. I think both did a brilliant job. They had something different to bring to the table in terms of their on-screen style, personalities and acting. They started off with such a big banner and director, which is good. This is a challenge and they pulled it off well.

Dabangg,Joker, Son Of Sardaar, Dabangg 2 and now Bullet Raja'what's the obsession with being a village belle or a small town girl film after film?

It's not my obsession; it's my director's and producer's obsession to see me in the role of a small-town girl (laughs). Maybe they think I fit into the characters with ease. And I'm fortunate they think that way. The roles have similar premises, but I've had a chance to make variations even in such roles. I agree that the roles are safer bets. But show me one newcomer who hasn't started off playing second fiddle to a big hero to set her foot in the industry? What I mean to say is that Dabangg was my first film. With the kind of success the film saw, I feel proud to have been a part of it. Why would I give up an opportunity where I am getting to work with big stars like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn? I am not stupid to let it go. I'm learning from the best in the industry. I don't just learn to act but also learn how to conduct myself in public, on the sets and otherwise.

Going by your repertoire, now do you think it's time that you break your old image and creat a new one?

I am not doing anything wrong that I need to break or come out of an image. I have made a space for myself in such a short span of time. Whether I am doing any big film or not but I observe media reports where my name is often linked to many big projects. Isn't that amazing? And talking about something new, I've just done Lootera which will release soon. It was a different experience. The script was good and it moved me. I would love to see how the film opens and how the audience reacts. I'm sure it will be different for the audience to see me in this role. I'm happy doing masala films. I don't choose a film on the basis of my co-stars.

Would you never sport a bikini or drop your clothes if the script demands and the story has the makings of a blockbuster?

I'd said no earlier on, and my answer hasn't changed. I don't think I need to drop my clothes or sport a bikini since I'm not comfortable. Till date, no director has asked me to let go off my inhibitions for the sake of the 'script'. Even if there is a situation or a scene in the film where I am suppose to kiss an actor, I would put my concerns forward.

There were reports that Farah was miffed with you because you weren't actively involved in the promotions of Joker. Is that true you women shared cold vibes?

Not really. If you pull out interviews or shows on TV, you will only find me promoting Joker. I had other commitments too. I was shooting for three other films, but I did as much as I could. I've known Farah for quite some time. The box office results of a film won't change my equation with a person. There's no bad blood between us. I don't regret doing that film because I got the opportunity to work with the best. While I was working on the film, it opened newer avenues for me. When I was doing Joker, Akshay asked me to do Rowdy Rathore and Ajay wanted me to be part of Son Of Sardaar.

Is that the reason you are not doing Happy New Year opposite Shah Rukh Khan?

See again, media reports! I've not even been offered the film.

Lootera is a period-drama, and it's for the first time you're working with your contemporary, Ranveer Singh. Apparently, there are steamy scenes in the film which are aesthetically shot. Ready to be the next hot on screen jodi?

Oh God! That's going a bit too far! But honestly, I can't say anything now till the audience reacts to the film. It depends on the people whether they accept our jodi. Essentially, it's an intense love story. Earlier, there were a few scenes in the film which I was uncomfortable with. So I asked director Vikramaditya Motwane and he toned it down. Whatever scenes are retained are beautifully shot, keeping my comfort level in mind. The scenes look passionate. I'm fully clad in a sari. No scene will make you cringe. It fits perfectly in the film. I felt going beyond that was not required. You don't need to drop your clothes to show passion and romance. It can be shown even without a single touch. It can be shown through glances and gestures.

Personally, do Ranveer and you get along?

I knew Ranveer from before we even started shooting. I met him on a show where we performed together. We also did the cover for Stardust, that's where I met him first. We share a great rapport. We are different people. He is hyper, I'm calm. I don't believe in rehearsing a scene too much, he is exactly the opposite. He is a method actor. He will rehearse a thousand times. If he is supposed to be panting in a scene, he will start taking rounds (smiles). It will be interesting to see how Lootera fairs. He has done a very good job.

So are you saying Ranveer is a good friend?

No, he is not a good friend. We share a professional rapport. That's becauseI haven't met him outside work. He is a colleague.

Anurag Kashyap offered you Lootera where you have a substantial role, although your previous films were hero-driven. Did his trust fetch you the role?

I guess so! No one wrote ill about me and I wasn't written off after the first film. To hold your own and share screen space with Salman Khan is not cakewalk. I didn't have too many scenes but no one said that I can't emote or act. People believed I had the talent. While shooting Joker, Shirish Kunder told me that he should have given me more scenes because he felt I was capable of much more. And this was told to me just during my second film.

You play the don's muse in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2. You are experimenting once again. How did you prepare for the role? Research?

I don't research. I'm spontaneous. I like to talk to my directors and understand what's on their mind. In Once Upon' my character goes through so many emotions. There's love, fear and innocence. I'm enjoying this role. She is not a quiet character. She is innocent, comes from a small-town to Mumbai to become an actress. The beauty of the character is her innocence.

After Rowdy Rathore and Joker, you will be seen with Akshay Kumar as his ladylove on screen in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2. There must be a comfort level now. Have you learnt to be disciplined the way he is?

There's a lot to learn from him. He's punctual but even I've always been punctual. I've never been in-disciplined. My parents never had a problem with me. Working with Akshay just reinforces that if a star like him can do it after being in the industry for 20 years then we better do it (laughs). He is a thorough professional. We share a fabulous working rapport. There is never a dull moment on the sets. He makes people laugh, he doesn't lose his cool and is quite fun.

Do you disagree with him ever?

Nope! I give my inputs only when it's concerning my role and my dialogues.

You're working with Saif Ali Khan in Bullet Raja. Weren't you always keen to work with Chote Nawab?

It's a fresh and nice pairing. Saif is perfect for the role. I really liked him in Omkara. Again, in this film he will portray a rugged and rustic character.

And what about Namak?

Namak is the tentative title. But I can't reveal much. It's a bit early.

You have friends and foes in this industry?

People who I've worked with are my friends. But my closest of friends are not from the industry. I like it that way because I don't like taking my work home. I don't really have any foe, which is good.

What's the funniest rumour you've heard or read about yourself?

There are rumours everywhere and all of them are funny (laughs). I read somewhere that I was in Patiala while I was shooting for Son Of Sardaar. I visited a spa when they were demolishing it. It was all rubbish.

The industry is abuzz with reports of your link-up with Bunty Sachdeva, an associate of yours. Is that funny as well?

I believe this is something not worth reacting to.

In one of your interviews, you'd said that you are impulsive. Does that put you in trouble?

It's only during shopping that I am impulsive. Otherwise I don't react in public. Even if I am annoyed I don't show it, all that is exhibited at home (laughs).

So what's your most prized possession?

My new car.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

No. I need to have many sightings to know and love the person (laughs).

Are you the kind of daughter who shares her relationship problems with parents?

No, I think that boundary is there. I share just the good parts and that too just with mum.

Marriages are made in heaven. Agree?

Marriages are made here (laughs). I believe in the institution of marriage.

What works for you, love marriage or arranged?

Love marriage. My parents won't object to that because even they had a love marriage. God forbid if anything goes wrong, I would not want to blame anyone for it. But I would prefer a guy who is not from this industry.

One thing that people should never expect from Sonakshi'

Don't expect me to kiss someone on screen or wear a bikini.

And what is that misconception people have about you that you'd like to clear?

Let them have all the misconceptions. I don't care. It doesn't make a difference. I'm happy working. At 25, I can call myself successful.

There were plans of your brother directing a film. What happened to that?

It is at initial stages. I would love to be part of it, if there is a role for me.

What kind of relations do you share with your brothers?

Like the typical brother-sister relations! They are protective of me.

Now that you have shifted with your family to Ramayan, do you like the newly-done up house?

I'm adaptable. I just need my room which I am comfortable in. Actually, I am barely in the house, I'm working and travelling most of the time.

Not only youngsters abroad but also youngsters in India are stepping out of their parents' homes into their personal pads. Have you given that a thought?

I'm comfortable living with my family. The kind of lifestyle I have where I am travelling, I like to come back home to my people. I don't need to shift. My parents have given me a comfortable life, touchwood.

Actors from non-Bollywood backgrounds say that star-kids have it easy.

I don't think so. My brother is also star-kid and he hasn't had it easy. So I can give an example from my own family.

There's a facade about being skinny and slim but you are someone who has a quintessentially Indian body' Are you happy with your body?

I've seen skinny girls and they are unhappy. I don't believe in being skinny. I'm not doing roles where I even need to be skinny. Only, if the role is substantial would I go in for weight loss. As a personal choice, I'm happy with my body. I've never fallen ill or fainted on the sets despite shooting for 16 hours. I eat everything that I like but I work-out that much. Everything needs to be balanced. I thrive on criticism. It gives me an opportunity to shut my detractors with my work. At least, I am not sitting jobless at home. I'm busier than most other heroines. As long as people don't talk about my talent and work in a nasty way, I don't care. And as far as acting is concerned, I don't give people an opportunity to talk. If people are talking about one centimetre extra fat on my waist, let them. It makes no difference to my life or work.

You also design costumes sometimes. You have an eye for fashion. Do you plan to begin your own line or design for a brand?

Not so soon, but let's see!

Sonakshi is very pretty and has good screen presence. But her roles are getting too repetitive now. I hope rambo rajkumar and lootera are something different or audience will definitely get bored of watching her in the same old small town girl roles.
