In a state of hysteria, Rishabh struggled to open his automatic car door manually.
"Nothing is going the way I want. Shit, I left her alone", he rushed back to the stadium. No signs of Madhu. He spotted a source who would easily divulge confidential information at the drop of a few thousand rupees.
"Madhubala ji, sir ji. She went home ji, the one in Dharavi, sir ji. I say you wait for her to get back to civilization. That place is a...you know how it is".
The guard offered sensible advice but somehow Rishabh did just the opposite. He drove down to the heart of the slums in search of Madhubala, the woman he hated with a passion, the woman who now carried his seed.

"Look who finally decided to show up", a boy with a biting wit stared Madhubala up and down. She smiled a loving smile and scooped him up in her embrace.
"Did you miss me?" She placed several kisses on his cheek. A dozen other kids huddled around their center of attraction: the woman with many foreign candies.
"No, we did not miss you the least bit. We were relieved to have gotten rid of you", the boy folded his arms as he spoke on behalf of the crowd.
"We missed you", the little ones gave in at the sight of the dangling candy.
"I love you all bunches and you, Nathan", she lowered herself to his level trying to pacify her favourite. "I want to be held, you know. I am lonely", a tear made its way down her cheek. Her eyes glittered with love and its inherent fear of rejection.
She always managed to gain Nathan's sympathy, he was her agony aunt.
"I love you", he rubbed her back until she gazed his reaction through a half open eye. "You cheat!! Always cry and make me melt".
She laughed a little and he a lot more.
"I missed you too", he finally admitted.
It had been two years since the day Madhubala became the guardian of twenty slum children, each of whom held a special place on her fridge wall and, her heart.
"I have a gift for you", supplied Nathan. "I have been thinking and I know you are not my...mother. But, you are the one God sent for us. I want to call you my adoptive mother". The boy presented a well thought out proposal, almost too articulate for his age. Madhu was immediately impressed. She saw her reflection in him, all the qualities she would look for in a successor.
"Mum and we have deal".
"Mother", the boy insisted.
"Mother", Madhu chuckled.
Nathan was pleased with his offering and the return gift of Quality Street chocolates he waited all year for. Madhubala's trip to Dharavi was always rewarding, both for her sponsored children and her inner peace. As a mother left the home at calm, a father entered uncharted territory.
To be continued...
