Ooops burning oil huh ? Domestic violence in Indian courts get 5 years at best, may be 3, but amazingly there have been some judgments that have said that the man has the right to "teach" his wife or some horrendous words like that. One recent such judgement to my horror came from Madras, South being the more educated part of the country and women's emancipation being higher, it was indeed surprising. In some religions beating a wife is allowed. So in Ratan 's case going to the police may not fetch optimal result.

Ganga will have to get forces together with the help of (reformed) Jagya and Collector etc, get villagers together and then teach Ratan and his family a lesson.

Correction: I had said last night that there was a Madras court judgement in favor of the wife beater, correction it was a Karnataka trial court, a mention of that horrific judgement is in today's Times of India.

Well, there are cultures that condone wife beating, pretty same to the kinds that strip women of all rights to complain, vote, raise a voice, drive, learn etc..

Chile, Aregentina - in those places - men are expected to be men and keep their women in line. In fact in some of these places, makeup cremes that hide hide black eyes etc are as popular as fairness cremes in India are.

The logic being - U got a black eye - fine, but how to hide it is more important. What is that telling us ? That getting beaten by your husband is okay - maybe you asked for it, but be ashamed to show that U were bad enough to deserve it. Blame the victim ofcourse.

Here too - G's baby is being called manhoos, just coz the poor chap wants a change or a cuddle or just some soothing cooing. I hope that woman miscarries - teach her a lesson about abusing a baby.

The Rat family will get its due, I hope they get paraded thru the village they have terrified , with blackened faces and handcuffs and eventually they all shud have to spend some time in jail - 3 years will be sufficient for me. Its their loss of face I want, in their village and in front of their own goons. Let them never be able to raise their heads again.

Could not agree more with you. You know I used to think that the old and ancient cultures such as Japan and India will not have domestic violence, imagine my shock when I discovered during a posting to Japan, that this is very common place in Japan as well, may be less now becos of a lot of NGO action
