Why Bollywood actresses get less success on TV?

You were right about fictional shows where women dominate. But barring some 80s shows mentioned by Kal El, no fictional show featuring film actresses managed to succeed. They don't even get offered these daily or weekly soaps I guess (after failure of Kamini Damini, Malini Iyer and Karishma on Sahara One).

Audience gets bored? But audience didn't give chance to female hosted shows earlier (I think Sonali's Kya Masti Kya Dhoom was the only one to get a good response back in early 2000s). It's understandable if they are bored with actors, but bored of actresses also? Actresses are far less frequently visible than actors, who exhaust viewer with their presence everywhere!

I personally think TV requires a unique personality of their own...and all these female stars are too Diva-ish (for lack of a better word)...

Like for example...I can replace Madhuri with Shilpa..and it would not affect the quality or the nature of the show one bit...but remove Salman from DKD and replace with Big b...or replace big b from KBC with SRK in KBC...the show changes for better or worse..but it changes... !!!!!!

What is that dig about Anupam Kher...guy is a freaking legend...I am guessing more people would see his show over shilpa/Madhuri in a dance show...coz if Kher does a show...there should be something over match making...

Even opinions of these actresses in dance shows..are too nice ...almost feel like they do not have opinion and only goal is to come across as a nice person...Which even Ozborne does in America got talent,..but she brings so much opinion to the show !!!

to some it up...for non fiction shows...actresses so far lack personality...the thing which real anchors and VJ's bring to the show...

I think ayesha takia is doing a fine job in that indo - pak singing competition...saw a few episodes

I think with female stars like Sonali, Malaika, Karishma, Juhi etc the fault also lies with them. They treat television as means to make quick money in a few months. Sonali for instance got some measure of success thru IGT. But she left that show and is now seen in every other show. In the span of 6 months she will be seen in Hindustan Ke Hunarbaaz, India's Best Dramebaaz. Instead if like Kirron Bedi she would have remained with the more high profile IGT she could have maintained her brand and exclusivity. Hunarbaaz was a flop while Dramebaaz sounds like a flop already. None of them will return with another season and Sonali will probably move on to more such 'baaz' shows flitting from one channel to another till channel wala get bored of her. The same thing basically happenned to music directors/singers too who flitted from one show to another for quick money and once the craze for musical reality shows died down they are out of work both in Bollywood as well as TV.

In contrast to Sonali if you compare Archana Puran Singh...she is solely associated with Comedy Circus. She has been around with the show from the beginning and show is linked to her alone rather than any of her co-judges just like DKD is linked with Salman or KBC is linked with Big B. Even Madhuri has seen some measure of success with JDJ because of the exclusivity factor ie she made her comeback to Indian entertainment industry with JDJ and continued with it for another season.

Another factor I guess is none of the A-list heroines get into TV. Only one who did in recent times was PC in KKK and she did meet with some success in the initial episodes. All others females in TV are retired/out of work actresses who have already lost their sheen among the public. In comparision Salman, Akshay, Big B are A-listers so obviously the response to them is better.

The shows which Kal El has mentioned belonged to a different era on TV. Indian TV then had just one channel. Shows used to have strong storyline and used to wrap up in 3 months. If you watch any of them on YT today you will find them still watchable because many of them are classics. No wonder they were all successful.

I agree about lack of unique and strong personality. Most actresses are all decked up, bimbo types and are either too goody-goody or too dismissive. Their comments lack profoundness.

I did not take a dig at Anupam Kher. I meant that Juhi Chawla was a popular, more visually appealing face, affable personality and has a certain playfulness about her so why couldn't her show with kids become a success whereas Say Na Something to Anupam Uncle was considerably well received? Audience can't even accept an actress as an aunt-like anchor in a kids' show? A kids' show also got more success with a male actor only! Female itni gayi guzri hain kya? Such weak appeal?

I agree about lack of exclusivity and heroines jumping from one show to another. But don't really agree with retired/past their prime type actresses. Big B was finished when he did KBC and the show gave a second birth to him in his career. Salman was going through worst phase of his career when DKD resurrected him.

I dunno. I used to be able to stand Madhuri Dixit but after JDLJ, I just couldn't take her anymore. That fake American accent, that 'step of the week' as if she's some Saroj Khan, the OTT display of her 'beauty'. Made my head spin.

Never watched Juhi's show, so I have no idea. Juhi was bearable as a JDLJ judge though. Malaika has done very well. Even with the males, except Salman and Big B, the others haven't fared that well. SRK's 'panchvi paas' and that desi version of 'Wipeout' were disasters. His KBC was also not as popular as Big B's. Sanjay Dutt was a huge flop as the host of Big Boss. We were so glad to be rid of him. So God know what works.

Malaika was originally from TV so she knows the rules of the game and how to connect with TV audience. She shouldn't really be considered a Bollywoodian succeeding on TV.

I agree about Madhuri. She comes with this starry baggage and it's all about her beauty, smile, her own filmi experiences and contestants raving about her. Amitabh also has this whole baggage with him but in addition to it he brings something more on his own as he connects with contestants, studio audience and viewers who'll see his episodes on TV.

I am yet to see an actress bring something more to the table than just carry her silver screen image to small screen.

Thanks for responses but what about actresses in fictional shows also? Apart from character actress types like Aruna Irani, Farida Jalal, Reema Lagoo - haven't seen film actress make it on TV (except a few serials on DD in 80s as mentioned by Kal El).

It also has to do with personalities I guess. Like Big B was a failure with Bigg Boss. That show failed to go with his legendary status. But KBC is in keeping with his image. Similarly if Aamir would have done a DKD he would have flopped. A SMJ suited him better. Sunny Deol's TV debut got scrapped even before it aired as he was so lackluster. Whereas Dharamji was appreciated as a judge on IGT. Ajay's Rock n Roll Family was a flop too.

Similarly Farah Khan's or Archana Puran Singh's sense of humour went well with shows like Indian Idol/Comedy Circus just like Malaika's dancing cum glam diva image.
