Why Bollywood actresses get less success on TV?

Don't get me wrong. Madhuri Dixit and Malaika Arora have had successful stint as judges in dance shows. Farida Jalal had her own considerably successful talk show on Sony in 90s. But overall, actresses rarely get solid work on TV or prove to be a lasting success.

Fictional shows are completely ruled out (Hema Malini's Kamini Damini, Sridevi's Malini Iyer, Karishma Kapur's Karishma were all huge disasters), even in non fiction a show riding on an actress' shoulders has rarely succeeded (Madhuri's match-making reality show Kahin na Kahin Koi Hai on Sony, Manisha Koirala's stint as anchor of Sawaal Dus Crore Ka on Zee TV, Preity's World records ab India Todega on Colors, Up Close and Personal with PZ on UTV Stars, Juhi's show for kids on Colors - all were disasters).

Simi Garewal is the only one who managed to have a successful chat show.
The successful non fiction shows also had actresses interchangeably being celeb judges (Shilpa was judge of JDJ, then Juhi and Karishma have done some shows, now MD is on JDJ). The celeb judges have been replaceable.

There is not a single actress who managed to get success on TV in any fictional or non fictional show or became synonymous with a brand the way Big B is with KBC, Salman with DKD, Akshay with Fear Factor and now in a way, Aamir with SMJ.

What's the reason for iconic actresses inability to get equally solid success on TV? The same women who were face of biggest hits, songs and brands are unable to become THE face of a TV show?

(It's curious how a bald, ageing Anupam Kher's Say Na Something to Anupam Uncle on Sab TV was successful whereas Juhi's show on Colors, along same lines was not! Kajol's stint as judge on a kids' talent show on Zee was also a failure. An actress who still gives hits and is popular in ads is unable to get viewers on TV?)

TV is said to be more of a women-dominated medium yet even here actresses lag behind male counterparts? How come?

However, therefore TV serials are dominated by ladies. Every plot is about women and their rights. Men are often neglected in Indian TV serials.

Well, I guess that Bollywood is men dominated, therefore maybe they stand out more than women.

Actresses should do hosting of big, different and unique shows this will give them success on television.

But how will they get big shows if even their stint as celeb judges or friendly aunt to kids are not successful? And Madhuri's match-making reality show was touted to be one of the biggest shows when it was launched, yet it just failed to take off.

They seem to be unable to get viewership even given a show tailored for them.

Nutan and Sharmila Tagore did two well-received tv serials on DD back in the 80s. The former starred in Mujrim Haazir and the latter in Zindagi which co-starred Urmila Matondkar, Supriya Pathak, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, etc.

EDIT: Hema Malini also did Nupur, Aap Ki Saheli and Women of India and I think a couple of Marathi shows.

you are saying the truth

maybe because they lack the star presence or they do not come as strong enough.

For ex in JDJ i never wait for MD comment,i prefer remo anytime.

same for BB. i've not seen shilpa's hosting but i cannot imagine anyone else except salman;however he hosts, half the trp is bcause of him

on serials its the other way

18 mins of the heroine and 2 min of the male lead for ex saathiya

we hardly see the male lead

another example when tulsi got replaced the show closed down but when 2 mihirs got changed, nothing happened

They usually came with poorly conceived shows. Whenever they got a decent show in keeping with their image like Malaika and Madhuri they managed to be more successful. Lets not forget that even males have had miserable failures like SRK's Zor Ka Jhatka on Imagine, Ajay Devgan's reality show Rock n Roll Family on Zee, Big B's Bigg Boss stint on Colors, Abhishek's Bingo on Colors.

Thanks a lot for info on 80s serials. I was not aware of these.

How come they got some success back then but haven't been able to cut ice with viewers later both in fiction and non-fiction?

What could be probable reasons behind this phenomenon according to you?

maybe because of too many reality shows with stars now.

Audience may be bored.

Or the shows are not well conceived or written or copied(ZKJ, record show)

I remember all of those. But at least male stars have had successful and iconic shows to their credit besides failures unlike females who've never really given a truly successful or phenomenal show on their own. Malaika still gets shifted from a Nach Baliye to some other show...I mean they are all interchangeable. There was not really a show which became synonymous with them.
