I think he went to Gryffindor because he wanted to belong there. Plus Harry told him to tell the sorting hat that he wanted to placed in Gryffindor.

Unlike everyone, I feel it would have been Ravenclaw. See, Dumbledore is really, really, really clever. He's courageous as well, but more clever I feel. And the criteria for Ravenclaw has always been intelligence and courage both. So that's why I say Ravenclaw.
