Madhuri wanted to learn dance from me: Sushant
Sushant Singh RajputMore Pics
Sushant Singh Rajput, 27, was clear he wanted to be a star even though he ranked seventh in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Seven years after dropping out of Delhi College of Engineering, he has bagged leading roles in Abhishek Kapoor's 'Kai Po Che', Raju Hirani's 'P.K' and Maneesh Sharma's next. He opens up to TOI about his first dancing partner Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, his mentor Shiamak Davar and his girlfriend Ankita Lokhande. Excerpts:

Let's talk about your childhood.
I was born in Patna where my father worked for the government as an engineer. I was most attached to my mom, who I lost during my 12th standard. She called me the night before she died and started crying and asked me to take care of myself. That night she had a brain hemorrhage and died. I was never close to my dad, as my mother was such a cushion. She used to always be worried about me, but never saw my success. She had a son who had died at the age of four after which she had four daughters and then me. So, I was totally pampered and spoilt. There was a vacuum in my life after her as she was the only one with whom I would discuss everything. After school, I joined Delhi College of Engineering, ranked seventh in the AIEEE and was the national Olympiad winner in Physics. I cleared 11 national engineering exams, including the Indian School of Mines at Dhanbad, but wanted to stay in Delhi for Barry John's theatre and Shiamak Davar's dance classes.

How was your experience working with Shiamak Dawar?
Whatever I am doing right now is because of him. I had initially joined Shiamak's beginner's course and straightaway selected as a dancer in his troupe. In 2005, I first came to Mumbai to Yash Raj Studios to dance for Filmfare awards and then went to Australia for the Commonwealth Games in 2006. Shiamak told me that I was not his best dancer but I was given a place in his first row of dancers. The first star I danced with was Aishwarya Rai at Filmfare awards. Dancing allowed me to travel to Australia as well as make money. Even though I had joined DCE, I spent most of my time with Shiamak and Barry.

Initially I went to him as I loved dancing and wanted to be with girls, as we did not have girls in my engineering batch. But when I started performing, I realised that this is what I wanted to do. I used to smoke in the room and he would get miffed as no one else smoked in his group. He had told me 'you are not the finest but you have something so you should join theatre.' After three years of studying engineering I realised I was getting claustrophobic in college and wanted to be on stage. I thought if nothing else would happen I would open a stall at Filmcity and make my own short films. So I came to Mumbai. I joined Nadira Babbar's theatre group and was a part of it for the first two and a half years after which Balaji's casting team made me audition for Pavitra Rishta. Ekta saw my look test and told me 'I will make you a star'.

Three of India's leading directors ' Raju Hirani, Maneesh Sharma and Abhishek Kapoor have signed you for their films? How did that happen?
I enjoyed dancing more than acting as I started as a dancer. When the lights would come on, I would forget that I was a background dancer on stage and used to feel it was only me on stage. I was always star struck. The first time I danced with Ash, I was just analysing and seeing her beauty and I was supposed to lift her. I lifted her and she said 'Please don't drop me, Sushant.' I couldn't believe that she was talking to me. I remember coming to YRF waiting in a queue and filling up a form to enter and was in total awe of the place. Shiamak said at that time 'Don't get excited, you will feature in their films one day'. I danced in a Bunty Aur Babli song standing behind Abhishek Bachchan. Jaideep Sahni had written that film and now he has written the script for the film I am featuring in.

I left Pavitra Rishta after doing it for two years as the story was going all over the place. I then did Jhalak Dikkhla Ja and got 10 perfect scores in 11 weeks. Madhuri once told me off camera 'you have to teach me how to dance. I want to dance with you'. I used to get embarrassed when she said this. After my performance she would always say 'I have nothing to say and just want to come and hug Sushant as he is so good. I was sitting in a coffee shop when I met Mukesh Chabra, the casting director for Kai Po Che. I auditioned for it and got selected. I was overweight and was to play a 23 year old cricketer and lost 14 kgs in the next four weeks. I thought I would need to do at least five - six big films before I could work with Raju Hirani. But he called me once and asked me to audition for P.K. He saw my audition and told me to have tea for one hour till he showed it to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. I was committed to doing two films with UTV before I could do another film. Raju Hirani called Sid Roy Kapoor and said 'I want your boy for my film'. In less than 10 seconds Sid Roy Kapoor said yes and I was on.

You have already shot with directors Abhishek Kapoor and Maneesh Sharma. What were they like?
Maneesh is upfront, tells you on your face and is a good actor himself. Apart from his filmmaking skills he will never manipulate his words. Abhishek is passionate and cannot sleep when he is making the film. He says only two things 'maaza aa raha hai' or 'maaza nahi aa raha hai'. They are both different but wonderful.

When did you start seeing Ankita?
She was my co-star in Pavitra Rishta and I was attracted to her. It was organic and we started seeing each other after four months of working together. Actors spend so much time together when you do TV that you come to know each other well. It's now been 3.5 years and we are living together and I am happy in my relationship.

Do you see yourself getting married to Ankita?
Most probably this year only. She never forces me to do anything. The best thing about her is she is not a hypocrite and does not manipulate. You can see through her. I see the efforts she is taking to adapt to my life in films even though she is possessive for instance if I need to do an intimate scene in a film. I am not that expressive, but I try and let her know that I love her.

'I Don't Like Bollywood'

As his new film gets ready for release, Rock On!! director Abhishek Kapoor explains why he will never run after stars again

Sitting beside a set of huge French windows that look out at Khar's prime real estate, director Abhishek Kapoor works on his laptop, sipping coffee and looking relaxed yet purposeful. He has wrapped up the shoot of his third movie, Kai Po Che! (based on Chetan Bhagat's book The Three Mistakes of My Life), but promotions are just about getting started. The movie, which revolves around three friends and their ambitions as they live in turn-of-the-century Ahmedabad, is mainly about a relationship Abhishek has tackled before—friendship. After all, his National Award-winning film Rock On!!was an ode to male bonding. The main difference this time round is that the movie is set in a milieu Kapoor is not familiar with—the middle class. But as the Bombay boy says, he loves a challenge. "It's important to go out there in unfamiliar territory. You get bored otherwise. My mother has a middle class background, she used to live in Girgaum. So I am aware of that value system. I quite enjoyed it. And nobody ever goes to Ahmedabad to shoot a movie. We found beauty in our own country; we actually shot Ahmedabad in different times of the day so it looks beautiful."

Even though Rock On!! is as urban as it gets—it tracks the lives of members of a rock band—Abhishek made sure the opulence didn't overshadow the content. "I feel these days some movies should carry the credit for costumes first. The costumes take away from real content. You get distracted and by the time the movie is over, you have a glitzy experience, but nothing other than that." Abhishek insists that since he works really hard on his characters and situations, he doesn't want anything to take away from that.

Arjun Rampal, who worked with Abhishek in Rock On!!, is a fan of the director's attention to detail. "Gattu [as he is called fondly by the industry] is one of the most sensitive directors I have worked with. He captures emotions effortlessly as he has a great eye for detail. His biggest strength is his understanding of different dynamics in different relationships," he says.

Abhishek started out as an actor and then made his first movie, Aryan, in 2006 and Rock On!! in 2008. It took him almost five years to get to Kai Po Che! "I bummed around a bit. Then, when I started writing, it took time as it's hard to adapt a screenplay from a book. I wrote 10 drafts before I got a handle on it." And even though he brushes off his career as an actor as embarrassing—"I cringe when I see some of the clothes I wore. I don't wear colour anymore because I got so psychologically scarred. But I really didn't get a chance. Nobody worked with me like I work with my actors"—he has now been around for a long time.

So why didn't he cast stars in his third and most ambitious movie yet? "First of all, they are great actors. Like Sushant Singh Rajput, who I realised later was so popular. We were shooting in small places and girls used to come out and shout 'Manav' (Sushant played a popular character in Zee's Pavitra Rishta)," he says, and then adds, "But also, none of our younger stars are secure enough to be in such a movie. They would be worried about what the other actor is doing. This is not a movie about one hero and two flunkies. I want people to connect with my movie. They should feel that it's them up there."

Amit Sadh, who plays Omkar Shastri in the movie, says, "I will be ever grateful to Gattu sir for choosing me to do the role. I had left India and learnt acting and came back to go through this audition. I was finding myself. It was a process. Thankfully, when he saw my audition, he felt that I could play the part and I will be ever grateful to him. He was always there to guide me while filming and will always be my guide. He made me become the character I was playing and I hope people will like what he has got out of me."

But Bollywood usually doesn't work like that. It's the stars who rake in the moolah. But Abhishek insists that after the success of Rock On!!, he had decided to never run after stars anymore. "Is it only about making money? Can't you do that in a million other ways? I want to make a film I want to make. Money doesn't give me a high. Ninety per cent work for money. Money validates them; they all say 100 crore and all that, but no one thinks about how long the movie will run. I find this bizarre. You are not going to take this money to your grave."

When he is not working, he is watching movies, and he recommends that everyone watch the American fantasy movie Beasts of the Southern Wild. But right now, he is obsessed with Kai Po Che! and it's getting harder to concentrate on other stuff. He is also especially excited about the movie's music, which has been produced by Amit Trivedi. "For Rock On!!, I took inspiration from Coldplay. I had Chris Martin's voice in my head and Farhan did it justice. If you have a great idea, and the intent is right, it all shapes up. The music for this movie is not snappy and fashionable, but is soulful."

The director is not very happy with the term 'Bollywood' and says that most movies are just "star vehicles". "I don't like Bollywood. I don't like this sales pitch of 'Leave your brains behind and come watch this movie'. Why should one do that? Are you telling me it's impossible for you to make a funny movie that's smart as well? Indians only have Indian films as their main entertainment. So why are you treating them like this? You need to make sure you make some difference. Like maybe an Aamir Khan, who puts a little bit more effort, so 3 Idiots made Rs 300 crore. It's all about the star. Everyone in a movie comes and says 'What can I do for this movie?' The star comes and says 'What can this movie do for me?' If you start with him, then you are just on the wrong track. Why not think about doing something new for the star?"

Abhishek is sure that the world is ready for a good 'Indian' movie that doesn't have to just be about Indian slums. "Why did we need a foreigner to come and make Slumdog [Millionaire]? We are not even acknowledging the fact that he did that. We just want 100 crore." His plans now include working on Rock On!! 2, and promoting Kai Po Che! as a film about India's "true middle class".

He also has his life philosophy in place: "The most important lesson I have learnt is to listen to everyone, but do only what I want to do. It's the way to go."

Sushant's party has a rare face

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is not usually seen at social gatherings, was recently spotted at the birthday bash of Sushant Singh Rajput at a suburban restaurant, raising speculations of an upcoming project between the two. It was a surprise party planned for the Kai Po Che star by his long-time girlfriend Ankita Lokhande of Pavitra Rishta fame and the guest list included a select few including friends from the television fraternity and directors of Sushant's upcoming movies, Abhishek Kapoor and Maneesh Sharma.
A source told Mumbai Mirror: "Sushant wanted to spend his birthday with his girlfriend. But Ankita had already chalked out all the plans, keeping Sushant in the dark."
However, the highlight of the party was Sanjay Leela Bhansali. "Sushant was in for a pleasant surprise when Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who rarely steps out, except for his trips to music studios and sets, showed up at the party. Sushant was delighted. He thanked him for gracing the occasion. Sushant also hugged and thanked Abhishek and Maneesh for giving him such crucial breaks in industry," the source said.
The actor's Kai Po Che is up for release and he is currently juggling work between Raj Kumar Hirani's PK and YRF's yet-to-be-named film directed by Maneesh Sharma.

Lucky to be working with Bollywood: Author Chetan Bhagat (With Image)

Lucky to be working with Bollywood: Author Chetan Bhagat (With Image)

Bestselling novelist Chetan Bhagat has now turned a Bollywood scriptwriter.

Chetan bhagat

Bestselling novelist Chetan Bhagat has now turned a Bollywood scriptwriter.

After writing the screenplay of "Kai Po Che!" - an adaptation of his novel "The 3 Mistakes of My Life" - the 38-year-old author from Mumbai is now writing the script for a Telugu film remake. The film, titled "Kick", will star Salman Khan.

"It is the story of a man who lives for passion and kick," Bhagat told IANS in an interview.

"I'm lucky Bollywood has liked my stories. It feels good because writers don't get noticed so much. Not only they are making films on my books, but I'm also working with big and talented people," he said.

"Kai Po Che!", directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is a story of three friends in Ahmedabad and the upheaval in their lives.

"It is the third time my story has been made into a movie. It feels special. 'Kai Po Che!' is even more special because I have written the screenplay too.

"It is a nicely-made movie. The final copy is not yet ready, but I have seen it in parts," he said.

"One Night@The Call Centre" was made into a film titled "Hello" (2008) and "Five Point Someone" into "3 Idiots" (2009).

Bhagat's other novels are "2 States" and "Revolution 2020".

He says the trend of adapting books into movies is still to pick up in India, especially in Bollywood.

"I hope this trend picks up. When people go to see a movie, they want to see a good story and if the filmmaker picks up a good and popular novel, he is starting at a good base."

Bhagat, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi and Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, wants to influence people. "I want to reach more and more Indians. I want to influence people with my writing and I have used entertainment to get their attention," he said.

He said making movies on books was not easy.

"It is difficult for a filmmaker when he is to make a book into a movie because in that case, you are competing with the readers' imagination," he said.

"A reader has to read the book and he can imagine, but the filmmaker has to imagine all that and create it (on screen), which is difficult. 'Kai Po Che!' is better than the book and I know that because I have done the script."
