Mahesh: (Jhalak Dikhhla) Jaa!

Mahesh Manjrekar and Soniya Jaffer
It will be an all-girl finale on Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa next week, as Mahesh Manjrekar will be voted off the show tonight. That leaves Mona Singh and Shveta Salve for the grand dance-off this Thursday.

A source on the show says, "It was a huge shock for Mahesh and his choreographer Soniya Jaffer. They didn't think they'd be voted out. In fact, they were confident about their performance right from the beginning. It took some time for the decision to sink in. It was more difficult for Soniya, than for Mahesh."

Marathi manoos

Mahesh sailed through the semi-finals because of the tremendous audience support. Says the source, "Mahesh became immensely popular with the Maharashtrian crowd. They were completely in support of him throughout the contest. In fact, a lady from Thane would call us regularly to say how much she wanted him to win."

Also, the chemistry between Mahesh and Soniya was hugely responsible for clearing their way through the various rounds.

Vote nahin mila!

But even the audience couldn't bail him out this time. The source says that even though Manjrekar is extremely popular, he lagged behind this time by a huge vote margin when compared to the votes garnered by both Mona and Shveta.

His ouster has not only shocked the remaining contestants, but has even affected the judges, who have been extremely supportive of his dance attempts. "Farah was literally in tears. She couldn't believe it. Even Sanjay Bhansali was visibly dejected," says an insider.

'I thought he was a cricketer!'

Soniya Jaffer mistook Mahesh for cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar when she first took up the job of choreographing his act on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. "I was completely unaware about who he was. When I heard the name I thought, 'Since he's Manjrekar, maybe he's a cricketer.' It's only when I joined the show did I realise that he's the man behind Kaante," says Soniya.

She admits that Mahesh has greatly improved as a dancer from his first performance on the show. She says, "None of the participants are professional dancers, but Mahesh had rhythm right from the start. It was obvious that he enjoyed dancing."

No stress

Reacting to the variation in scores that they've got on the show so far, Jaffer says, "You can never tell what's on their (the judges) minds. Sometimes you think your performance is up to the mark, but the judges may not agree. So we didn't stress out too much about the marks and concentrating on putting our best foot forward."

Now that they are out of the show, Soniya has plans to take a vacation. "I think I deserve a nice, long vacation. Once I get back, I'm looking at doing some interesting work in films."
