Chapter 8: Doubt
Zoya struggled to free herself from Asad's grip. His fingers were curled so tightly around her arm, she felt the blood draining out of her. Who was this savage? Was he the same man who'd looked after her last night?
She pushed him away but that only incensed Asad further and he pulled her against him. He wanted to uncover her mouth but was still unsure about whether she'd scream. His hand stayed there... her breath tickled his fingers and he could feel the moistness on her lips. Just ten inches closer, and he could let his mouth do the silencing. Damn desire!
He moved his hand away, trapping her in the circle of his arms, and brought his mouth down on hers roughly, in a kiss that was meant to inflict pain rather than pleasure.
She fought back but he was in no mood to relent. The trickle of hot tears down her face as she surrendered jolted him into reality, as he realized the ruthlessness of his actions. He stopped immediately, and put some distance between them.
He couldn't bear to return her gaze... the wounded look in her kohl-rimmed, tear-stricken eyes seared his soul. Her slender frame trembled as she inched away from him on the bed and curled up, hugging herself as she rocked back and forth, crying softly.
What had he done?! Remorse swept over him like a giant wave, and he stepped off the bed. He hadn't meant to hurt her but he was in so much pain... and for a minute there, he'd lost it. All he'd thought about was inflicting the same kind of pain on her.
He considered leaving the room but he couldn't get himself to walk away until he'd set things right. He rubbed his forehead in despair and finally said, "Sorry Zoya. I overstepped my boundaries... that was uncalled for."
Zoya didn't respond, pretending to ignore him. She wiped away her tears, got off the bed and headed to the bathroom.
"Zoya... I'm really sorry. I've been acting like a jerk since morning and irrespective of what you've done, I shouldn't have done that," Asad apologized again.
Zoya stopped in her tracks and turned to face him. "Damn right you have! And what do you mean irrespective of what I have done?!"
"Don't feign innocence Ms. Farooqui! You're not the aggrieved party here," he snapped.
"And you are?!" Zoya retorted. "Why don't you just tell me what's on your mind Mr. Khan? Even the worst criminals in this world are entitled to a fair trial, and here you've pronounced me guilty without even asking me anything about it."
"What's to ask, Zoya? You've been playing me for a fool, ever since you got here," Asad's curt response cut through Zoya like a knife.
"Ok, so what have I done that's so terrible?!" Zoya could barely contain her anger, as she spoke.
"Well for starters... it might have been to know that you're taken, that there's a man in your life. I remember your indignation when you thought there was something between Ileana and me. Not for a moment there did you pause to think about your fiance?!" Asad growled, the rage quite evident in his tone.
"Correction Mr. Khan. My ex fiance," Zoya cut in. "And no, there is nothing between me and him now. I left New York, called it off before I did in fact."
"Perhaps you weren't clear enough Ms. Farooqui, your would-have-been husband is on his way to claim you, make amends and take you back where you belong. I gather I was your vacation fling, the one last man before you patched up with the love of your life, and entered the portals of holy matrimony?" Asad asked bitterly.
"What?! He's coming here?! Why?! Who told you?!" The look of disbelief on her face seemed so genuine that for a minute he thought there might have been a misunderstanding, and she was really not at fault. Or she was a really good actress!
"Cut it, woman. I don't buy this act anymore. What was yesterday about? Something to get the honey all riled up... jealousy is a sure shot way of getting a guy's attention. I'm sure you know," Asad interjected, before she could ask more.
That did it for Zoya. With quiet dignity, she pointed towards the door. "Mr. Khan, I can't have a conversation with someone who isn't willing to give me the benefit of the doubt. When you're ready to listen with an open mind, you know where to find me. For now, I'm sure you can find your way out."
Asad's anger soared again. How dare she show him the door, and in his own house at that! He stormed out of the room, even as one half of him wanted to get back at her and show her who the boss was!
***
Zoya collapsed on the bed and cried her heart out when Asad left. Images of that horrific day swirled in her mind... the humiliation of finding out the truth about the man she was betrothed to, the web of lies he had woven around her...
Last night when Asad had been so considerate, she'd felt a glimmer of hope that maybe all men weren't like Ayaan but Asad was no different!
***
Asad settled down in his room and pulled out his phone. "Rahul, Asad. I'm not going to be able to make it to work today, you're going to have to push the important meetings out and take a few by yourself. Hope that's alright."
"Sure will do. By the way, all ok I hope?" Rahul queried. This was the first time his workaholic boss had ever called in to cancel meetings.
"Yes," Asad lied convincingly. "I'll see you tomorrow," and hung up.
He cupped his head in his hands, feeling emotionally exhausted for the first time in many years. He hadn't felt like this since the day his father had walked out on them, and years later, when Ayesha had done a number on him in college and crushed his already broken heart.
He thought about the showdown in her bedroom and how he'd acted completely out of character. Ammi would've been thoroughly disappointed. But then, Zoya was causing him so much agony. The thought that she'd lied by omission about her single status was something he couldn't overlook!

Your writing - technically is brilliant...however, I am not sure I am excited as to how this "Asad" is developing. He seems a bit possesive and over-the-top. I find his jealousy and obsessiveness very undesirable in a man. Insecurity is the worst thing I find appealing and tragically leading men in Indian seem to possess this character trait. It's a bit of a turn off. And then Zoya having been involved with another man? Ex-fiance? Relationship with someone else? Mmm, I don't really picture Zoya this way. I like a good whole romance - old fashioned style. A rough and aggressive Asad here is not inviting and it's loosing the romance that was so good in the beginning. Passion is disappearing... hoping to read more.
Laila
Hey Laila, good to hear from you girl! Thanks for the comment about my writing. I haven't really edited or proofed it so I was hoping there weren't any errors! And now I see there are typos 😊
Regarding how the characters are evolving, I never believed it when I read authors' forewords mention how their protagonists took a life of their own as the chapters developed.
It's funny, like bringing up a child. You have this vision for them, but there's no guarantee that that's how they will turn out. And that's the case with my Asad and Zoya.
Asad:
He started out in my mind as the quintessential gentleman and as the story developed, he seemed uni-dimensional. I found that behind his flawlessness and control lay hidden the inability to trust easily, and to doubt easily... because of past life experiences. Yes, he's insecure, at one level all of us are… and that's what makes us human – we're not infallible heroes. How we rise above these flaws, that's what makes us heroes.
His jealousy and possessiveness - interestingly, this trait is universally depicted not just limited to Indian men. I've read romance novels – both old fashioned and modern, and I find that this is one of the commonest flaws used by authors to create conflict. So age-old tactic there, nothing specific to Indians 😊
In this story, I've used this trait because at some point, I wanted Asad to realize he wasn't perfect - wanted him to do something stupid, irrational. More importantly, I wanted Zoya to realize he was human – we tend to idolize the people we're falling in love with, and I thought a touch of grey would be good.
Zoya:
About how I'd pictured Zoya initially – she's today's girl. I remember having this discussion with you and we both thought differently about it. So when I finally sat down to visualize the plot, I realized I couldn't see her as someone who's never been in any relationship in this day and ageJ
When I put myself in Zo's shoes while writing this chapter, I saw a woman who's attracted to a man for a while now, who thinks of him as perfect and then his actions of the previous night only reinforce this perception. She's bedazzled by this side when suddenly she encounters his irrational anger and aggression. She fights back first but that doesn't change his behavior, and then she's in despair. Her tears are of disbelief as she realizes the man she's attracted to, is not perfect. For all the courage that women display, when faced with aggression from someone they know/ like/ love, they're in shock and despair.
The plot development:
As for good ol' romance and passion, life is not a bed of roses always – love is a roller coaster ride, so it's going to be interesting to see how these two overcome their challenges.
wow..another amazing part..I just love your writing...
