Chapter 13

Aarti and Vidhi were tense the whole day. They knew Yash would have spoken to Pankaj in office. Yet there was no phone call from either one of them. The matter was such that it could not be updated over the phone. It had to be a face to face revelation. Everything they did had an undercurrent of fear of the unknown. Vidhi was almost close to a nervous break-down. Mummyji even questioned her if she was alright once. Which Aarti deflected nicely. But Vidhi had a tough time keeping a stable front before the family. Inside she was a mass of nerves. As each second in the clock ticked her nerves were getting winded more and more.

Both brothers returned late from the office that day. After their talk they were flooded with work. They did not even get time to breathe let alone think about how to handle things going forward. But Yash had time to make one all important call.

The rest of the family members had had their dinner and had retired to their respective rooms. As Aarti and Vidhi were setting the table Yash and Pankaj returned after freshening up.

The atmosphere was stretched as a taught string. No one was speaking, all carried about their usual nightly meals mechanically. Yash and Pankaj shared a look for a long time once they had finished having the dinner which neither of them could eat much of anyway. Vidhi who was on the verge of breaking down leaned and placed her hands on the table seeking support as her legs had become too weak to carry her.

Pankaj immediately placed his hand on top of her and met Vidhi's eyes. They shared an intense eyelock and communicated silently through their eyes completely ignoring Aarti and Yash's presence. But then Vidhi broke away and fled to their room crying which made Pankaj stand up and follow her.

Yash and Aarti were observing all this and they could feel the pain of the other couple. Aarti had tears in her eyes. Yash who was still sitting finally turned his eyes which were following Pankaj disappear into their bedroom,to Aarti. Her eyes brimmed with unshed tears and Yash could empathise with her, he was emotional about the whole thing too.

She broke the silence and finally said

"So it's true. Pankaj bhaiya is having an affair."

After a long pause Yash repeated what Pankaj had told him earlier in the day.

"Not...quite."

Upon reaching their bedroom Pankaj noted that the door was shut but not locked. He got hold of the door handle and turned it to open the door and peaked in to see Vidhi, who lay on the bed with her head down on the pillow, hands folded above her head and crying softly.

It broke Pankaj's heart to see his beloved wife in such a state. He cursed himself for the millionth time for having been the one to put her in such agony. He slowly walked into the room. He knew Vidhi had registered his entrance but she did not lift her head and continued crying into the pillow.

Pankaj went across and sat on the bed next to her. For an entire minute Pankaj kept quite not knowing how to start and where to start. Then finally he made up his mind and started to speak.

"Have I lost you my Rani?... What's a Raja without his Rani?" Pankaj referenced the names they had for one another during their intimate times together.

Vidhi was listening but she could not bring herself to respond. What she saw earlier in Pankaj's eyes clearly reflected guilt on his part. Which meant he had cheated on her. All her worst nightmares had come true, life as she knew it ended then and there.

"This Raja of yours... is like a small child...constantly needing your attention. His Rani used to be more than willing to indulge him once. This Raja got addicted to it. Started to expect it all the time and then his Rani became involved in taking care of the kingdom and its needs...this Raja felt abandoned...alone...lonely."

To Vidhi it was painful to hear to his confession. He made it sound as if she pushed him into adultery which was so not the case. How could he insult the love they shared and look elsewhere.

"Why did the Raja not tell this to his Rani??...why did he ...why did he betray her??" said Vidhi getting up.

"No Vidhi... you got it all wrong... i did not betray you... I love you too much for that...but...but...I don't know what went wrong with me. I am ashamed of putting myself in the position where your trust in me will be questioned" and with that Pankaj told her the entire sordid details of his current situation.

"Oh my GOD ...what have you done? How could you have...? Why didn't you tell me all this? How long have you been hiding this...this secret??? " said Vidhi after hearing everything Pankaj had to say.

"I am sooo sorry Vidhi... I am sooo sorry. I don't know if you can ever forgive... I do not deserve your forgiveness... but ...but if you ...if you... leave me now... i .will not survive...i will di..."

"Uh." Vidhi immediately placed her palm on Pankaj's mouth stopping him from going further.

"What you have done ...it breaks my heart...I don't know if i can ever bring myself to look past it...but...but don't say things like that...i can't bear it... more" said Vidhi in a broken voice.

Pankaj caught hold of her hand and held them in his.

"Just give me one chance...one small chance... you will never regret it Vidhi...I promise...I promise... I will never...ever...make you doubt me again. Please..." there was such desperation in his voice, such earnestness and sincerity. He went down on his knees before her while saying all this.

They remained in that position for a long time. Vidhi coming to terms with all what had happened and Pankaj hoping with all that he had that she would come to forgive him at the end somehow.

"You have no idea since I started suspecting you of having an affair how much agony I have been through. I thought you had lost interest in me. That you.. that you no longer loved me... I thought despite doing everything in my power against it Buaji's prediction was coming true" Vidhi spoke up after what seemed like ages.

"What are you talking about? What prediction?" asked a confused Pankaj coming and sitting next to Vidhi again.

"That you would leave me one day.Oh since the beginning of our marriage she...she..was constantly putting me down. She used to say I was suffocating you with my attention. Initially I did not pay heed to her words. I was so much in love with you I did not care what she thought... then once we had kids and I got busy with them...when I could not give you much of my time you ...you never complained...you seemed alright with how things were... and that's when I started to suspect that you were glad that I was out of your face most of the time. I looked back at our time together and was ashamed of myself for crowding you ...that's when I decided to give you all the space you needed...so that you would be h.a.p..py" chocked Vidhi.

"Oh my GOD!! Vidhi why did you not tell me all this before?" questioned a shocked Pankaj.

"Wait there is more... as the years went by... I got less and less assured of my charms...so to speak... as a woman... I thought you would not be interested in an aging wife"

"That's utter non-sense Vidhi...you are ...you always will be the most beautiful woman in the world for me. How could you think such a thing?"

"It was as Buaji had said that once the kids are born the husband loses interest in his wife...all he expects is a tidy house and a plate full of food... and I believed her...I went out of my way to please you...scrubbed the plates till they were shiny...took all the responsibility at home...did everything that i thought a good housewife should do so that you will not be disappointed in me. So that even when the physical part of the marriage lost its charm you would still value me...love me"

"Oh my GOD ...Vidhi...all this...all this mess...such utter fools we have been...and Buaji...GOD help me...how could she brain wash you like that. Why did you ever ...ever believe her Vidhi...What were you thinking? Why didn't you ever share anything with me? I thought you had lost interest in me and looks like you thought the same too."

"Just as you ... I too assumed a lot of things...yes what fools we have been..." agreed Vidhi nodding to what Pankaj had said.

Finally Vidhi lay her head on Pankaj's shoulder and he wraped his arms around her. Both had to come to terms with a lot of things... the future looked grim.. but atleast they were still together... still in love...despite everything.

"I love you ...my Rani" declared Pankaj

"I love you... my...Raja"

"Always??" questioned Pankaj needing assurance yet again.

"Yes...always" replied Vidhi in return.

Phew !!! with that i end the ViPan issue in my story.

So that was my version of the track...i extrapolated whatever they showed in PV added slight tweaks here and there and viola...that's what you read.

Yeah ...Bua... see i do not have a villian in the story so i have to make her the balli ka bakara for everything. They never showed Bua having any influence on Vidhi's thinking so far in PV so i just added that bit to my story to make it interesting

Glad you approve of this update... lets see what happens to AarYa after this

Yeah key to a successful marriage is good communication.

Once that is lost all the problems surface.

I am just sorry that they let things drift sooo far away from them before they could wake up and set things straight.
