Bollywood film business has gone change from year to year basis. Hence, its Return on Investment has also gone change. But one thing has remained constant is the revenue generated from India Theatrical is still the major source of revenue return. But over the years revenue returns from Satellite, Overseas and other sources have also contributed immensely to it.
We will postmortem the profit of Jab Tak Hai Jaan on each revenue return basis as it is equally hit in India and overseas. Also, it got good Satelite Rights amount also. This case study might clear some of the doubts, how a film makes profits in post 2010+ era. Here is our study. (All are approximate figures are in INR and rounded for easy mathematical calculations).
Budget - 60 crore.
Satellite Rights - 37 crore. It will be pocketed directly by makers.
Music, Home Video and others - 10 crore. It will be pocketed directly by makers.
India Theatrical Distributor share - 65 crore (Taking JTHJ Lifetime Collections as 120 cr nett). It will be shared between Distributors, Sub-distributors, Exhibitors and Makers. In JTHJ case YRF (Makers) are the main distributors and major amount will be kept by them.
Overseas Theatrical Distributor share - 31 crore (Taking JTHJ Overseas gross collections as 75 crore). It will be shared between Distributors, Sub-distributors, Exhibitors and makers. In JTHJ case YRF (Makers) are the main distributors and major amount will be kept by them.
Gross Recovery of JTHJ - 143 crore.
Gross Profit - 83 crore.
Percentage Returns in Ranking Based for JTHJ -
1. India Theatrical - 45.5% of Gross Recovery.
2. Satellite Rights - 25.8% of Gross Recovery.
3. Overseas - 21.6% of Gross Recovery.
4. Music, Home Video and Rest - 7% of Gross Recovery.
So, despite JTHJ excellent performance in Overseas its India theatrical return is still huge. That shows despite big growth in many revenue sources along the years, India Theatrical Revenue still is No.1. Just a thought for other films which does poorly in Overseas, how important for them is the India Theatrical. Anyways its good that other sources are also generating revenues for well being of Indian Film Industry.
