Chap 14:
Geet Frank:
She opened her eyes and it was pitch dark. It was a moonless night. She was feeling dry and parched. The jug of water lay beside her. She had forgotten to keep a glass beside it. She started gulping down water in one go bottoms up. She deliberately let most of the water trickle down into her thin night gown. She could feel the wet clothes sticking to her breasts. The entire jug was empty now. But the thirst remained. There was an uneasy feeling in her ribs. And suddenly her clothes felt too tight at her chest. She had no space to breathe. She got up and turned the bed lamp on. It emitted a faint halo like light. Not helping the cause at all.
She closed her eyes and felt him close. He was now behind her. He gently bit the tip of her ear lobe and inhaled from her hair. She felt her hair strands loosen. She knew it had to happen now. Every breath was feeling painful. Her throat had become hot sand.
He was not touching her at all. But she felt him in every part of her body. She gradually soaked in his presence; sucking her front in like a cocoon into herself due to the immense torture that she was feeling. She inhaled the delicate oil fragrance that smelt like the shavings of wood from an old tree with fresh leaves.
Her head was reeling from the fever she was feeling. Sleep refusing to come and soothe her tense state. She did not even want to open her eyes and see who it was. She did not care. She did not want to know. For knowing meant the slow spin towards a nothing. She felt him come in front of her. He did nothing. She wanted him to soak in the translucence that were her wet clothes. But she knew he was waiting for her to open her eyes or voice her desires. For he was a true gentleman.
Her teeth began chattering. She felt his searing hot hand at the base of her head. He pulled her closer ever so slowly. She knew he was terribly close. She wanted to push him away. She wanted to ask him to leave. But she was afraid to do that for he would indeed leave. She heard a big swirl of wind outside and a chilly breeze bringing a few strands of her hair to her face.
She then felt his finger tips painstakingly pushing each hair back behind her ear that was now hammering. She felt a music playing for them to waltz to. She always heard the same music when he was near. She heard a clanging sound like a crab walking on glass and realized she was the one making it. Her chest was now really paining with all the heaving. She was afraid to know who he was. Afraid to open her eyes and find out. Her eyes were wet with tears; for now there was no escaping the word 'Maan' escaping her lips.
Geet:
"Maan" she said to no one in particular and drifted off into an uneasy sleep. Come next morning she looked at her own writing and was trying to understand why she was writing stories only about him since she had met him. As usual some things were beyond her understanding. She decided as long as she was only writing about it, what was the big deal?
Currently she had a dull tiredness in her head and chest. Her bones were making rickety noises as she moved. She felt a hundred years old. Had she actually felt the damn writing? May be some hot tea or steam inhalation would help. Or may be she needed to keep herself busy. She had tried to contact Bappi da the previous day but turned out he was out of station and did not want to chat on roaming. And Samuel had called again to inform that he would not be able to make it. So that had left Geet staring into the paperweight the entire day and hence the cheesy piece of writing had taken form.
She was about to get ready when she received a call. She checked the number and of course it was Dracula.
Geet "Good morning Sir."
Dev "Morning Geet. I am picking you up at 8. And book a brunch for two in the nearest five star hotel."
Dev hung up. And Geet sat staring into space. Nearest five star hotel. Now where would that be? She had checked his calendar the previous day and found his site visit location for the present day. So now since she was supposed to be super smart according to Maan and extra dumb according to Dev, she decided to use a little bit of intelligence to figure out 'nearest from where'? The office or the site.
Since her and Dev would be loafing around the entire morning, it would be a drag if they had to reach near the office to go to a silly brunch. So Geet decided to book a brunch near the site. She called Pinky.
Geet "Hi Pink. See I need to book a restaurant table near this site. Do you know any good place near there."
Pinky "Hi Geet. Ya there is a nice good restaurant with good food and wine near to that. It is called the 'Lounge Bar'. So call them up and make the necessary arrangements. They have a reasonable lunch buffet too. How many people are we talking here?"
Geet "I…I had rather not say."
Pinky laughed "Sure Geet. I understand. Bye."
Geet actually found herself liking the Pinky lady. Though she was a bit of a gossip and a bit loose, fine very loose in her talks, she was understanding and nice. Vow, Geet had never been a big fan of drunkards before.
Geet was now waiting for her boss in the parking lot. And when he did arrive she got into the car. A beautiful sedan this time. It had leather interiors that smelt new. And the entire car smelt of car freshener that was well, fresh. A soft musical number was playing and she was actually enjoying the cozy comfort of this car. She wished he brought this car to office everyday.
Dev "The site we are going to today is very important. It is a bit far from the city as you know. It is a resort and the client is sparing no expense in making it. They are paying us extra commission so we give them personal attention. I need to visit their site every week and spend some time there even if it does not serve any purpose."
She was silent and admiring the scenery. She seriously did not care why they went on a merry go round every morning in the city. Or outside. Whatever. They reached the resort and she watched Dev getting immersed in deep conversation with a man who appeared to be a local. Apparently a few sheep had 'accidentally' sneaked into the site and were grazing at the precious expensive landscaped grass. She saw Dev's face assume the form of Dracula again. He made a motion beckoning her.
He held up his phone indicating a number. The name indicated 'Sapna'.
Dev "Call her and tell her where she needs to meet me for the brunch. And then ask one of those gaping villagers standing there to clean up my car. From the outside."
Geet called the lady and a sweet accented voice spoke back.
Sapna "Hello, who is this?"
Geet "Hello Sapna, this is Geet. Dev Khurana's new secretary. I have arranged the brunch booking for you two in the 'Lounge Bar'. Please note down the address."
Sapna "What! That is so damned far. I have to drive such a long way."
Geet "Yes I understand. But Sir is on a site visit nearby so that is the quickest way for him. He needs to finish meeting with you and get back to another site."
Sapna "Oh is it. I understand. No problem. Tell him I will be there. And thanks."
Geet then beckoned a few village boys and bribed them with tens to get the car cleaned. It was gleaming now.
Dev came back and looked at her with an irritated face. What was that all about?
Dev "So where do we need to go now?"
Geet "The Lounge Bar."
Dev "Oh my God! Are you crazy?"
Geet gaped "Aa…you asked me to book nearby na Sir."
Dev shook his head in exasperation "Nearby to the office you fool. Not to here."
Geet was angry too "You did not specify that na Sir. You just said nearby."
Dev reddened with anger "Look here lady, don't show your attitude with me. I have seen several the likes of you. Do not try to act smart with me. For you are simply not. Yesterday you were trying to give me a lecture on not making assumptions right? Look who is making the assumptions now."
Geet stared at him "I…"
Dev "Do not think that I am one of those dumb old jocks who you can railroad into listening to you. And before you get there, I hope you remember my warning."
"Of course." She spat out. This man was positively acidic. What was his bloody problem in life?
Dev "Now tell me one thing Geet. If you booked a brunch for two, where will you be when I am having this brunch?"
May be she had not thought this through.
Geet "I will take a taxi back to office?"
Dev smiled caustically "And I am expected to come back to office, pick you up once more and then go to the other site?"
Geet was scratching her head. Wouldn't he still have to do that if she had booked the brunch close to office? Ok she had to think about this from the beginning.
Dev "Or you will take one more taxi from office to reach the other site alone? When you don't know where it is exactly. The taxi driver will drive you around the city first."
She was looking at him helplessly.
Dev "You fool, if you had booked the brunch close to office, you could have just walked back to office. Or asked someone from office to pick you up. I could have just swung by after brunch to pick you back up. It wouldn't be so much of a bother. But now, you have to stay outside chatting with the security while I am having my food inside. Good luck with that."
She was biting her nails.
Dev "Ya keep biting them. For you will not be seeing food anytime soon."
He went ahead shaking his head and got into the car. She followed suit super angry.
Geet "May be I will just starve the entire day. Why is that such a big deal for you? May be I like men in uniform and will chat with security for hours. May be I have a lunch box right here in my purse. Why do you have to be rude at me for that?"
Dev glared "Because I am paying you. So why don't you just shut your trap. And remember no gossiping."
She sighed and took a deep breath. She would not get affected by this mans anger. Daarji had always said people who got angry were incapable. Yes.
They reached the Lounge bar in just five minutes. Turned out even her bad luck was bad. It started drizzling. Pitter patter pittyty rap.
Dev coughed "There would most likely be a waiting lounge. It is the 'Lounge' bar, isn't it. Just sit there and don't make any noise."
What was she? A baby? She was silent though. She had understood she should not be making noise.
"DEV!"
Geet turned and saw a beautiful girl of medium height and poker straight hair walk in. She was skinny but well endowed. She came and embraced Dev over his shoulders and kissed him on his cheek. Well what do we have here? So this was the reason for the very strict 'no gossip' rule. Dev Singh Khurana was into a lot of activities that were gossip worthy seemed like. There seemed to be nothing accidental about this.
Geet looked at his face and she could not believe it. He was smiling with the most handsome of smiles. And enquiring after the Sapna lady with the gentlest of voices. He grabbed and squeezed her waist. Asked about somebody named 'Hima'. And Sapna could just not stop the words gushing.
Apparently Dev knew how to take care of the ladies better than lorry driving. Geet was seeing a totally different side of him. The one that he reserved exclusively for people he wanted to impress. She was angry. So all that wickedness that he put on in front of Geet was to corner her. So she would be his slave and do as she was told. He was now making her book brunches for his personal appointments during office hours? Geet wanted to slap the man.
She requested the security and apparently the waiting lounge was already full with people waiting for their reservations. So she was provided with a stupid nilkamal chair to sit on, sad and hungry until Dev could finish his midday romantic interlude. She was grumbling and muttering to herself. The security was not very friendly either.
Very soon her stomach also started making grumbling noises. She had lied. She did not have any lunch box in her purse. And she was not capable of staying hungry for so long. She believed she was still at a growing age. If not vertically then horizontally. She wanted to throw a few tantrums and eat some dessert. This was just not fair. To top it all, it was all her fault too. She started cussing and cursing Dev to herself mostly and the artificial plant next to her if it cared to listen.
Finally she heard the man laughing. Vow he laughed also? Geet hoped that would not reveal his sharp Dracula canines. He came out and Sapna kissed him on the cheek again to bid him goodbye. Geet decided she did not like public displays of affection much. Rapunzels, Frontals or Just plain old kisses.
As soon as Sapna walked away Dev threw a packet at Geet.
"Lunch" he said and walked away.
Geet was staring at the food in her hand with astonishment. What was this man? He had thrown food at her as if she were a poor puppy waiting to catch the biscuit.
