Louie wants what Louie can't have, Madhu. Thank god someone is not desensitized to the beautythat surrounds them. Generally, locals take things for granted. Me being aprime example.

Recap:

I hear my phone vibrate. Louie's name flashed on the screen. I decided to pick up.

"Hear me out Madhu", he said in a hoarse voice.

I need not explain on what happened next, a kindergartener could have seen through the horseshit of excuses he presented. He moved on to the blabber about forgiveness before I hung up out of boredom. Come to think of it, I could have done two loads of laundry in that time period. I was not about to go back to his lying, cheating sorry ass. I kicked a door in anger, Rishabh's door.

"Angry young lady, the door is falling apart as is, save me the refurbishment fee. We will be out soon".

"Move over", I wanted to lay down underneath the ceiling fan.

"I am no shrink. I may look like one but, I am not about to listen to your problems. Find yourself another bed".

"I need to cool down".

"And why is that?" He slid to a corner.

"Cause you married a hothead", I slipped into place.

"Damn girl".

"Damn indeed". I rolled my eyes at the irony of it all. The man I trusted the most had failed me and the man I never wanted to be seen with lay within an arm's length. For better or worse, I was a part of them, part of the people I loved to hate.

______________________________________________________________

"I expected this scene to be filmy. Like you taking care of me types with loads of tears and drama".

"You can count on your entourage for that. I choose to distinguish myself from the crowd".

"Aren't you going to enquire about my drinking problem?"
"Do you want me to?"
"I thought you would be mad".

"Then, why'd you do it?"

"You know how it is. Peer pressure".

"Since when do you give a rotten crap about peer pressure? I bet you suggested all the drinking games for the night".

"Since you ask, I was the champion".

"You got me all worked up when I can't even take my frustrations out on you. Why would you want to ruin a perfectly healthy liver?"

A smile appeared on his sickly face, the kind that brought a winning shine on his teeth. Did he wish for me to rebuke him? In that case, I was going to do the exact opposite. "Is that what you want to hear? I refuse to say anything of that nature".

"So you have no opinion about my bad judgement last night".

"No, I largely agree with you".

"That's a first".

"I said I agree with your true nature not the pretence you put on".

"Say what?"

"You realize your mistake, that's the first step to recovery". I tucked him under a woollen blanket and prepared to leave.

"It's your fault for not coming, you know. I invited you to the party". He showed interest in stretching my stay.

"You realize you are asking me to keep your on a leash. I am perfectly capable, say the word".

"I was born a wild dog. Tame me baby". He grabbed me by the arm. I gave him a sharp look that spit fire, he quickly released his grip.

" Careful what you wish for, you just might get it". I winked and danced out the room leaving him retired hurt.

The Kundras had begun planning the move to Mumbai. Most of the furniture was packed and ready for U-Haul. This meant Rishabh and I shifting back to dorms, a news that got me excited and Rishabh equally disappointed.

"The only way I am ever going back to that gutter is if I am staying with you".

"Hell to the na an".

"I will pull some strings and no one has no know".

"Do I have another choice?"

"Good girl".

I had learned to not put up a fight when the end was near. One more month Kundra and I will be in law school and your lazy ass doing whatever a lazy ass does. It came as no surprise that Rishabh pretty much took over my space leaving a mere quarter of the cupboard for my belongings.

"What? Like you used the closet. I am considering sending you off to Tibet with the Dalai Lama".

I would love to be anywhere but with you pretentious husband.

"You say something?" He was waiting to hear an outburst.

"No, I just cursed you in my mind".

"What's for lunch?"

"The soup box is on the top right shelf. Help yourself".

He stared at me in utter confusion for a minute. Then, picked up the box and began reading the instructions.

"Open the box and empty contents into a bowl. Easy. Done! Now, add water. Do I look like a chemist, biwi?" He had a frustrated expression on his face.

"Add water. How hard is that?"

"I am spoiled. I will call our chef down".

"Hey, you play my rules in my apartment. I am off to study. Don't stay hungry and no chef".

"Wait, what is this?"
"You opened my mail?"
"You have 18 dollars in your bank account".

"You opened my mail".

"Can you be a tad more honest with me about finances?"

"You opened my mail".

"I get it. I was wrong to open your mail. Move on the pressing issue, shall we?"

"That's a crime".

"Don't try to change the topic ". I rushed out the door.

"Madhu. Biwi". He pulled me in.

"I will put a stop to this tantrum of yours right now. I am your boss, you follow my orders. Pack up, we are moving in to my place where you do what I say".

"I am a big girl. I have done this for eighteen years. I can do again".

"Finals are in two weeks and you don't have enough money to buy three meals a day".

"Scholarship allowance is coming next week".

"Save your excuses. I am helping myself. I do not want eat out of cans. I am organic and I am your responsibility when in your home. Now, you will be mine. Returning the favour biwi".

"Okay, I don't have a valid argument but".

"Atleast you tried, loser. Be careful with my belongings".

The guy had a heart after all.

----------------------------------------------------

(Next morning, Rishabh's dorm)

"You look so damn kissable, ox blood", he posed like the old spice commercials as I walked out of the shower drying my hair.

"Burgundy. How do you know the name of my lipstick?"

"That's your question, really?"

"I know you are trying to pull my heartstrings".

"I have got those wrapped around my fingers a long time ago. I was generously offering a compliment. Receive it with gratitude".

"Your charm has no affect here. Kissable lips, let's not go there".
"Your fault for looking red hot".

"You actually think you are being original?"

"I hold a copyright".

"To the ghetto one liners? Believable. You are hangover". I lightly brushed his coat. He let himself fall over and on to the bed.

"I was enjoying our little fight. Please don't leave me halfway".

"I am not here for your amusement".

"I am still recovering, you know. You are in charge of all the chores. I will go buy some quality liquor".

"There is no way I am allowing alcohol here. I do not want your mother suing me for your demise".

"Is that the reason?"

"I never told you how to live your life, don't change how I live mine, no alcohol in my vicinity".

"Fine, come to the bar with me. You are still living your life, I am just a part of it now".

Was that supposed to win me over? Awww, you flirtatious prick who is killing his liver.

"Great, you reduced me to a chaperone or would babysitter be better suited in this context?"

"Put on a nice dress, party pooper. Wait, you don't have one". He was suddenly ticked off. He drove me to an underground shopping center that was conveniently named the fifth avenue of Shimla. An exclusive haven for the chaibuls to feast on the labour's blood and sweat. In every shop he saw dresses, bags and brand names, I saw a home for the homeless, a lifetime of education for the illiterate, liberation from child labour, all going to waste. The place defied every fibre of my being,

"Rishabh, this goes against my morals . I am an advocate for sustainable development. This is anything but".

"One night".

"No".

"I will settle for the organic brand hypocrisy cause we are running out of time. We need to talk this out later".

He picked up a short sequin dress that ended well above my knees. I was less than comfortable in his choice of outfit. But judging from the look on his face, one more no was enough to blow him off the roof. I came out pulling the dress down. He picked up a pair of sky high pumps. That was sheer torture.

"Faux leather, not made in a sweat shop. Wear them with a smile", he asserted. What had I gotten myself into? We were polar opposites. His world began and ended with money. I despised people his kind, I disagreed with every opinion he held. Yet, we had a mutual understanding. What exactly did we share? Was this arrangement going to last? A million questions crossed my mind as I entered his bar, a world full of glamour and bright lights.
