Sardar Superman on Nach Baliye!
October 9, 2006The entire ballgame changes in shows like Nach Baliye or Jhalak Dikhlaa Ja where actual celebrities are involved. Little wonder that the shooting of Nach Baliye 2, which was supposed to start at 11 am, finally started at 4 pm!
On the flip side, however, it gave ample time to see the behind-the-scenes events of Nach Baliye and its stars. The grand set put up at Film City looked quite different with celebs moving around in their casuals, two of them smoking non-stop to reduce their tension before the performance. There was Hiten Tejwani sipping on a cup of cutting chai with Bakhtiar Irani, and Shweta Tiwari sporting a wig and dressed in a car mechanic's costume!
They were all preparing for the comedy special episode of the popular dance show on Star One. One must admit that a large share of the credit for the success of this episode would go to the makeup artistes. If Shweta Tiwari was unrecognisable, Shweta Kwatra and Manav Gohil look crazy dressed as a secretary and boss. Gohil sports a bald wig and an artificial paunch.
The first pair to perform was Narayani Shastri and Gaurav Chopra. The couple, who still claim they are 'just good friends', set the stage on fire by dancing to Yun aage peechhe from the new Golmaal. Narayani, in a pink Barbie dress, wore two ponytails. Gaurav decided to follow his partner by sporting the same hairstyle!
But their performance was not appreciated by the judges, and they are rumoured to be eliminated this week.
Narayani says, "We were very tense since the bar was raised higher this time. Besides, mixing comedy with dancing was very difficult. I am happy for Gaurav, who worked really hard on his looks."
Next, Gauri and Yash Tank performed. They were very innovative with their mimicry of Don. Yash dressed up like Amitabh Bachchan in Don, and Gauri like Shah Rukh Khan. They got a standing ovation from the judges, plus whistles, hundred rupee notes and catcalls from Saroj Khan!
But that is when the drama started. Yash, on being quizzed about how they managed such a great performance, said that a friend of his had helped him with the emotions. This was taken very badly by Saroj Khan, as she immediately took back her marks. As per the format of the show, contestants are not supposed to take help from anyone but the choreographer.
Despite Gauri's clarification that they just showed their emotions to a friend for a second opinion, Saroj wanted to stage a walkout. It was only after a long discussion with the producers, director and programming head, and a lot of coaxing and cajoling, that Saroj Khan agreed to re-enter the stage and give marks to Gauri and Yash. But not before making it clear that this was the first and last time she was doing something like this.
Manav Gohil and Shweta Kwatra were next. With the artificial paunch and a tabla, Manav found it difficult to walk, leave aside dance. But he did a decent job, as they danced to Jhalak Dikhlaaja.
So impressed were the judges that they gave a perfect 10 to the couple!
Next, was the turn of Shweta Tiwari and it was her birthday. She said, "Today is my birthday and four is my lucky number, so I am confident that we will do well!"
Her husband Raja and she did a decent dance on Hum they woh thee but she had a shock in store for her. Saroj Khan got very upset with Shweta's poor performance, and walked out of the show. People appeared shocked and Shweta started weeping profusely.
Just when everyone was wondering what prompted such a strong reaction from Khan, she burst out laughing. "You all are dancing in a comedy round, can't I crack jokes? Happy Birthday Shweta!"
