Changed from the prior topic (Aish is my inspiration (Zoya Afroz). 😉

Since the prior topic did not have any takers, I am going to twist it out around a little bit and ask everyone on here if all of you are FLUENT HINDI SPEAKERS when watching Bwood movies. 😃 I am not and still watch with subtitles. But, it is not necessary to be a fluent speaker since mostly Bwood films have a lot of English dialogues these days. Is it necessary to be a fluent Hindi speaker or do you find it a turnoff when watching a Bollywood movie if someone doesn't converse in the language? And you have to explain the meaning of the movie to the viewer? Please share your thoughts. 👏

I dont need subtitles no.

But I dont speak Hindi as a mother tongue I speak Marathi, although I hardly speak any Indian language at all , unless I have to i.e. friends of my mom coming over, going to the Indian candy store to buy barfi etc.

Talking to my grandma, etc etc

I mostly speak English with my sis and well German in my day to day life, cuz I live in Hitler Land.

personally I find it annoying to translate for people yes, like for my sis for instance, she hardly speaks any language apart from german and english, so I have to translate nearly everything which is a huge turn off.

No. I probably speak worse Hindi than Katrina Kaif. I only understand the language because I grew up watching Bollywood movies. I can speak a little, but can't read or write Hindi. :)

Grew up speaking English and Mirpuri (Kashmiri dialect) - learnt Hindi watching movies like Dil, Beta, Saajan, Chandni, Chaalbaaz etc. Now I am fluent in Hindi. I love the language. It's my favourite! Jai Ho!

Hindi's my mother tongue...and while I can't write in Hindi anymore and reading takes forever now (one of these days I WILL re-learn how to read properly in Hindi), but speaking isn't an issue for me. When we left India, my mom had insisted that we speak mainly Hindi at home and one of the biggest reasons she would let us watch Bollywood movies and desi shows was so we wouldn't forget Hindi...so no I don't need subtitles, but it's fun to read them anyways. 😆

I don't think anyone needs to be Indian to enjoy Bollywood films, or know Hindi properly either...but sometimes, some movies have a lot of references that perhaps only an Indian who's aware of them (or someone who knows quite a lot about India, it's history, cultures, etc) would truly be able to get :) For example, Kahaani is full of cultural, mythological references from the get go and if you don't know them, then it's easy to miss the small nuances that made the film a lot more enjoyable to me...does this make any sense? 😕😆
